For the first time in Jerry
Jacksons four seasons as
coach at C.A. Johnson, the
Hornets will field a junior
varsity team.
In the past, Jackson had
to use any athletes who
were interested in playing
on the varsity because of a
lack of numbers. Slowly
but surely, that is chang-
ing, and more interest has
allowed Jackson to start
building his program.
That is the lifeblood for
growing a program, Jack-
son said. The JV guys had
to play varsity before, and
they were getting beat up
and ended up quitting.
Now we hope to have those
guys stay in the program
and stay together four
years.
Even with that positive
development, Jackson is
struggling to get players to
make a year-round com-
mitment. He has had better
success in that regard with
the skill-position players,
whom he can take to vari-
ous 7-on-7 camps to keep
them engaged.
Play on both sides of the
line is suffering, though.
Before C.A. Johnson took
the field last week in the
Richland Sportsarama,
most of the linemen had
been in camp for only a
week.
We are hurting on line-
men, Jackson said. Some
of them didnt come in the
first week, and we havent
had a huge chance to work
with them. I am pleased
with what we are capable
of doing once we start
working with them. Im ve-
ry optimistic about this
team.
Eddie Boatwright
served as Jonathan Good-
wins backup at quarter-
back last season, and now
it is Boatwrights turn. He
is more of a thrower than a
runner, the same as
Goodwin.
The receiving corps
should be the strength of
the offense. Michael Knox,
Kevin McDonald, Kenneth
McDonald and Peter
Goodman have experience
and will be counted on to
carry the load. Wilbert
Jones moves to running
back after playing a variety
of positions last year, and
Jackson hopes using him
in one spot will increase
his production. Anthony
Eaddy also will contribute
at running back.
These guys practiced
together all summer, and
that should help us as the
season progresses, Jack-
son said. They have a feel
for each other. But, again,
the key is going to be how
quick we can get the line to
come together.
One of the biggest sur-
prises has been the devel-
opment of Tyquan Turner.
He transferred from New
York last year and never
had played organized
sports, but should be a
standout on the offensive
and defensive lines.
Mike Ashford is in his
fourth year in the program
and will complement
Turner on both sides of the
line.
Jackson has about 30
players on the varsity
team, so he needs his team
to stay healthy to be in the
playoff hunt.
Were still young and
thin in many positions,
Jackson said. Hopefully,
these guys will have some
success early so we can
build some confidence in
them. We finished 2-8 last
year, and we dont want to
have another season like
that.
Eddie Boatwright takes over the quarterback duties from
Jonathan Goodwin at C.A. Johnson.

Keenan experienced a
major drop-off last sea-
son, when the Raiders
went 1-9 following a 9-2
mark in 2009.Keenan
graduated 19 seniors
from its 2009 team, with
13 going on to play in col-
lege. Coach Mitchell Mo-
ton said that left him with
an inexperienced team
last season, but he hopes
being thrown into the fire
will produce some cool
results in 2011.
We were a bunch of
puppies being thrown in-
to the ring with the
wolves last year, Moton
said. We played close
with nearly everyone, but
in the fourth quarter,
when depth became an is-
sue, we had young legs
and couldnt keep up.
Hopefully that will
change for us this year. It
was hard to replace that
talented senior class.
Moton has his offen-
sive line back, three of
whom Jonathan Gath-
ers, Brandon Smalls and
Joseph James will be
third-year starters.
The Raiders will rotate
two players at quarter-
back. Eric Griffin is more
athletic and more of a
dual-threat, option-type
signal-caller, while Titus
Hopkins is the better
passer. Both will play ex-
tensively this season, Mo-
ton said
Whoever is under cen-
ter will have a couple of
reliable targets at receiv-
er. Tight end Matt Belton
led the team in receptions
and touchdown catches
last season, and Joshua
McCord has big-play po-
tential on the outside.
The running game will
rely on Dytrone Hyman,
Pete Essaw and David Mi-
chael Clarke.
I like what were doing
on the offensive side of
the ball, Moton said.
The offensive line is the
strength of our team, and
I think we have some
guys that can make some
plays behind them.
The defensive line re-
sembles a college line in
regard to size. The Raid-
ers average well over 300
pounds across the front,
led by 6-foot-6,
330-pound Shanquan
Harrell. More heft is pro-
vided by 340-pound Kev-
in Canzater and
320-pound Jerry Thomas.
We took our lumps
last year, but weve grown
up, stayed together and
came out with great fo-
cus, Moton said. Those
guys up front make it eas-
ier on our linebackers
and secondary to limit the
big plays.
Linebackers Tyler
George, Tyler Smith,
Preston Perkins and Jere-
my Austin should benefit
from playing behind the
huge line. George led the
team in tackles last year,
and Perkins was also a
standout.
D.J. McCollum and To-
ny McWhite lead a young
but aggressive secondary.
I feel much better
about where were at this
year than I did last year,
Moton said. We need to
stay healthy just like ev-
eryone else, but these
guys really made an effort
in the offseason to get
better. I think last year
was a stumbling block,
but we should be back on
the way up now.

LOWER RICHLAND ROSTER
Lower Richland this
year looks more like the
teams that featured future
NFL players Richard Sey-
mour, Lance Lauryand Da-
vid Patten than the small-
roster squads of recent
years.
That has put second-
year coach Wayne Farmer
in a muchbetter mood than
last year. He was 2-8 in
2010, but he hopes a foun-
dation was laid for the
future.
They learned the sys-
tem and understand the
mentality were trying to
translate, Farmer said.
We are getting better with
our discipline and our
want-to as far as sacrificing
to be a successful football
team. The challenge now is
to learn how to win
ballgames.
The Diamonds have
more than 70 players on
the roster but only eight
seniors.
They lost eight starters
on offense, and one of the
returning players, Marcus
Edmond, is moving from
running back to quarter-
back to run the wing-T op-
tion attack. Kendrick
Roach will be counted on to
pick up the slack for Ed-
mond, a 1,000-yard rusher
last year.
Senior Raymond West-
on and Quinton Salley are
returning starters on the
offensive line, but the level
of experience tails off after
that.
We lost a lot of our of-
fense, Farmer said. Were
young all over the place, so
we need to get those
youngsters up to speed
quickly. My biggest con-
cern is our offensive line
and their youth.
Tight end C.J. Davis will
be counted on to be a big-
play threat and to blockin a
run-orientated offense.
The defense returns no
starters in the secondary.
Roach, who also plays line-
backer, and defensive ends
Alonzo Gibson and
Quayshawn Waters will
anchor the defense.
But Farmer likes his
teams approach so far.
We have to learn to
transition the things we do
in practice to game situa-
tions under the lights, he
said. Inexperience is still
taking place. With only
eight seniors, Im looking
forward to the things to
come down the road. Every
time we have a chance to
get reps in, we need to take
advantage of it and get a lit-
tle better every day.

Jackson, Derrick Hines, Corey Seawell, Brandon Gantt, Brent
Patrick, TJ Wilson, Stacie Bell, Bryan Sipes.
ROSTER
When Dreher left the
field at Memorial Stadium
after the Sportsarama on
Saturday night, coach Josh
Stepp couldnt hide his en-
thusiasm, even though he
team had played only a
two-quarter scrimmage.
As he gathered his play-
ers beyond the end zone,
he let them know their year
of hard work was paying
off. His next hope is the
0-10 nightmare of last sea-
son soon will be a distant
memory.
Last year, we were dealt
a tough hand, Stepp said.
We took over a team that
lost 22 starters. That forced
us to play a bunch of fresh-
men and sophomores and
kids that had no playing ex-
perience, and they were
forced to get their experi-
ence on the field. After last
year, anytime we can get
any type of success, that is
huge for these kids.
The Blue Devils, who at
times started 11 freshmen
last year, feel like they have
the athletes necessary to
run the spread offense bet-
ter than they did a season
ago, and they hope the ad-
dition of defensive coordi-
nator Bobby Dan McGlo-
horn will improve a de-
fense that allowed an aver-
age of more than 450 yards
per game.
McGlohorn, who was
coach at Lakeland Chris-
tian School in Florida, has
scrapped the 3-4 look for a
4-3 alignment.
The defense will be led
by linebackers Devin
Barnes and Josh Wilkins
and defensive back
Kwayshon Drayton. All
three played key roles last
year and will be counted on
to be leaders.
Weve had a tremen-
dous offseason in the
weight room and during
the summer, Stepp said.
We are starting to see the
fruits of our labor, and the
kids are seeing how their
hard work will pay off.
Joe Fennessy is a senior
who will start in his first
year playing quarterback.
Last year, he was coming
off shoulder surgery, so
Stepp had him at wide re-
ceiver when he was
healthy enough to play.
Fennessy has a strong arm,
knows the offense and is a
natural leader in the hud-
dle, Stepp said.
Running backs James
Huggins, Barnes and An-
drew Goyins will be the
strength of the offense.
Wilkins also will see time at
receiver, with Reggie Shiv-
er and Kendall Taylor pro-
viding big targets.
The offensive line will be
thin and lack experience,
but Stepp hopes running
the spread will aid the unit.
The Blue Devils arent like-
ly to smash the ball down
the field, so they want to
spread opponents out and
let their guys get in space
so they can make plays.
When you get a year
underneath your belt
and a year to install your
program, from the weight
room to what you do on the
field (that) makes a
world of difference, and
the kids are seeing that.
Stepp said. We feel like we
have the athletes to run the
spread. We feel like that is
the best thing for us with
our lack of size up front.
Dreher quarterback Joe Fennessy hands the ball to running back James Huggins
during the Sportsarama at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

When you have won a
state-record five consecu-
tive state championships,
the last thing you think
about is rebuilding. Dur-
ing its run, Hammond has
reloaded more than it has
rebuilt. But this season
could present the biggest
challenge for coach Erik
Kimrey.
The Skyhawks return
seven starters three on
offense and four on de-
fense so Kimrey is wary
of allowing expectations
to overwhelm his young
squad.
The only pressure they
feel is the day-to-day pres-
sure of getting better with
every repetition they
take, Kimrey said. Were
young and inexperienced
but very eager. Knowl-
edge is courage, and that
is something you gain ov-
er time. Were trying to get
these guys in their com-
fort level so they can per-
form to their highest
ability.
Hammond averaged
more than 400 yards of of-
fense last year and al-
lowed less than 190, and
those numbers will be
hard to match with such a
young team.
The offense will be built
around the running tan-
dem of B.J. Bennett and
Joey DeAngelis. Kimrey
said Bennett was one of
the most talented players
he has coached. DeAnge-
lis averaged 10 yards per
carry last season, and
both are explosive,
smooth runners who can
run inside or out and will
share time in the slot.
Those two will carry the
load behind a young of-
fensive line and a new
quarterback. Gone is two-
year starter Dave Nidiffer,
and in his place under
center is younger brother
Jake Nidiffer, a junior. The
younger Nidiffer has a
strong arm and pocket
prescience, but he needs
experience to reach the
level of his brother.
Jake brings a lot of the
same qualities as Dave,
Kimrey said. Hes a big
kid that can really throw
it. When he gains experi-
ence, hes going to be able
to run the offense fully.
Roo Daniels is the only
returning starter on the
offensive line. He will be a
three-year starter at cen-
ter. Others expected to see
their first extensive action
will be Cole Brown, Wil-
liam Love, Peter McWil-
liams and Patrick Kneece.
The receivers are inex-
perienced as well, but Ni-
differ will have a couple of
big targets: tight end Can-
non Smith (6-foot-4, 210)
and Doak Fisher (6-3,
185).
Were still going to be a
balanced team between
the run and the pass,
Kimrey said. We need to
be able to do both. B.J and
Joey might have to carry
us early, but we should be
more balanced once we
get the kids in their com-
fort levels.
Defensively, the only
returning starter on the
line is end Robbie Gandy.
Jordan Cox, Patrick Faw-
cett and Patrick McClean
should be in the mix.
Logan Smith and John
Allen Babson are solid at
linebacker, and Braden
Shockley is a hard hitter
at safety. That core should
be the strength of the de-
fense, and Kimrey expects
those three to lead by ex-
ample. Ronald Brown,
Stephen Mitchell,
Quayshon Myers and Har-
ris Pharr are expected to
contribute at linebacker
and in the secondary.
Again, until some of
the younger guys are com-
fortable with what were
doing, the veterans are
going to have to lead us,
Kimrey said. We had a
great spring and have car-
ried that over to presea-
son practice. I really like
where we are right now.
B.J. Bennett reaches for a pass during practice. Hammond coach Erik Kimrey said Bennett is one of the most talented players he has coached.

For second-year Cardi-
nal Newman coach Andy
Smyth, going to practice
has been a much more
pleasant experience this
season. Last year, the Car-
dinals were limited by a
lack of participation and
injuries, and they limped
home with a 0-10 record.
They had 21 players on
the roster, and on many
Friday nights suited up 18
and had as many as eight
who played every snap. So
to have 35 players come
out for the team this sea-
son has made planning
practice an easier task.
We didnt win a game
last year, so we have to go
up from there, Smyth
said. We had to go out and
find more kids to get in-
volved. We revamped the
weight program. We
were limited in what we
could do last year. We feel
like weve made a good
turn in both numbers and
the quality of players.
The Cardinals have
strong senior (15 mem-
bers) and sophomore (16)
classes. They will be test-
ed by a challenging early
portion of the schedule,
which includes five-time
defending state champion
Hammond in the opener.
Senior Nick Palevich
will be counted on to re-
vive a running game that
averaged 120 yards per
game last year. He has
been a three-year starter
at a variety of positions but
will be the featured back
this year. He is a straight-
ahead runner who fits the
offense well.
Sophomores Cole Ba-
con and Evan Dubois will
be expected to contribute
to the running game as
well.
Given the offense we
run, moving the ball on the
ground will be key for us,
Smyth said.
The quarterback battle
is coming down to transfer
Dalton Halfacre and last
years backup, Kody Wat-
son. Whoever wins the job
will have some big targets:
Jake Wilson, Jacob August
and Austin Ajukwa are all
taller than 6-foot-2.
Were a little more ath-
letic in several positions
than we have been be-
fore, Smyth said. We
think weve got some piec-
es in place. I cant tell you
how that translates into
wins and losses, but I
think well put a signifi-
cantly better football team
on the field.
The offensive line will
be anchored by guard Bil-
ly Solomon and tackle
Dan Maroney, both three-
year starters. Jack Moore,
Mackie Reibold and Mac
Snoddy will provide
depth.
Solomon is the only
player expected to start on
both sides of the ball. He
will anchor the defensive
line, with Taylor Patten,
August and Snoddy also
seeing time.
Matt Erdman led the
team with more than 100
tackles last season even
though he played each
game with a cast on at
least one of his hands be-
cause he broke bones in
each hand. Bacon and Wil-
son likely will be the other
starters.
The secondary lost both
starting cornerbacks, but
Smyth thinks he can find
the right combination of
players to fill the voids.
Were going to be
young, he said. We
forced people to fit last
year, but we have guys that
fit now. Key is to stay away
from injuries. We feel, if
that happens, we have a
chance to move these kids
around and give them a
chance to be successful.
Cardinals have more
options this year

Ben Lippen lost three
games last year including
a 9-7 setback to Augusta
Christian in the first round
of the SCISA Class 3A play-
offs in which it held
fourth-quarter leads. With a
solid nucleus returning,
coach Reggie Shaw hopes
the Falcons find a way to win
those games and improve on
their 7-4 record.
The Falcons welcome
back 12 starters, including
quarterback Austin Irish,
leading rusher Tyler Renew
and a host of defensive play-
ers. The biggest concern is
replacing four starters on
the offensive line.
The interior is a concern,
and weve still got some
work to do, Shaw said. We
arent where we want to be
right now, and we have some
question marks, but I also
feel like we have some guys
that have been tested and
are capable of making
plays.
Ben Lippen is in the same
region as five-time champi-
on Hammond and opens
against Heathwood Hall in a
key region game Aug. 26.
Shaw hopes the experience
of his team pays dividends
against a difficult schedule.
The offensive attack will
center on the arm of Irish
and the running of Renew
and Tuck Benefield. Irish
threw for a little more than
1,000 yards last year and has
the potential to greatly im-
prove, Shaw said.
Renew rushed for more
than 1,000 yards despite
missing three game because
of injury. Benefield will see
plenty of action in the back-
field and will double as the
leader of the defense from
his linebacker spot.
Branson Despres is the
only returning starter on an
offensive line that paved the
way for more than 2,500
yards in 2010. Despres will
be a three-year starter at
tackle. Blake Holloman and
Seth Rhoden will be counted
on to log a lot of snaps as
well. Shaw is counting on
these same players on the
defensive line as well.
Irish will have Taylor Ste-
vens and Fraser Hahn as big-
play targets at wide receiver.
Greg Williamson will re-
join Benefield to give the Fal-
cons a solid linebacking
corps. Hunter Spivey re-
turns in the secondary and
will have help from Keaton
Walker, James Patterson and
Michael Parks in a deep, ath-
letic unit.
With the low participation
numbers, Shaw knows his
team has to stay healthy.
We have some guys on
defense that we feel really
good about, Shaw said.
Last year we suffered some
injuries and maybe didnt
train the best way possible.
We changed our focus in the
offseason to make sure
these guys are ready to play
a longer season this year.

10 ZONE 3, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011 WWW.THESTATE.COM THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA HEATHWOOD HALL
First-year Heathwood
Hall coach Jon Wheeler
understands the tradition
of excellence established
by the Highlanders. He
wants to follow in the foot-
steps of former coaches
John Daye and Rip
Blackstone.
Two years ago, Heath-
wood Hall was undefeated
until losing the Class 3A
SCISA final to rival Ham-
mond, but last season the
Highlanders stumbled to a
2-8 mark after the loss of
nearly 20 seniors from that
runner-up team.
Wheeler believes this
years team will grow be-
cause of the obstacles it
faced a season ago.
Were still a young
team, but these kids we put
in the fire last year grew up
some, Wheeler said.
What we want to do is
build off the awesome tra-
dition here. We want to
take what these guys have
been taught and build on it
and get better and make
progress.
Former South Carolina
tight end Andy Boyd is the
new offensive coordinator,
and he is installing the
spread offense. His trigger
man will be Will Detwiler.
The sophomore quarter-
back started last year and
threw for more than 1,800
yards.
He will be helped by
Jance Shine, Joe Thomp-
son and Evan Carter in the
backfield. Shine and
Thompson are breakaway
threats, and Carter is a
bruiser at fullback.
The Highlanders are
missing their leading re-
ceiver from last year but
have capable replace-
ments, including Shelton
Whittaker, Alex Bueno,
Thomas Burg, Drew Pirie,
Shelton Blue and John
Fowble. Whittaker is a big
target at 6-foot-4, and the
rest of the group is athletic.
The young offensive line
will count on Gabe Brander
to be a leader. Heis a junior
who has started for two
years. Seniors Harrison
Pendarves and Pierce Wer-
ner add depth. The trio also
will play key roles on the
defensive line.
Depth, though, will be a
problem overall. The High-
landers will dress 26 or 27
on Friday nights, so they
will need to avoid injuries.
Fowble was an all-state
selection at linebacker, and
he has added kicking du-
ties this year. The second-
ary will be aggressive and
led by Mac Ellen and
Bueno.
Wheeler, who was an as-
sistant at Hammond, liked
where the Highlanders
stood after two weeks of
practice.
Were young, and if we
lose guys to injury, that will
more than likely affect two
positions, Wheeler said.
The key for us is to have
the guys out there that give
us the best chance to win.
Jance Shine returns at running back for Heathwood Hall, giving the Highlanders a breakaway threat.
