The Catholic Church of Sanger and Del Rey

"Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." -- Matthew 16:19 Reading 1 -- Eliakim is destined by God to be a father to those who live in Jerusalem (Isaiah 22:19-23). Psalm -- Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands (Psalm 138). Second Reading -- How deep are the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! (Romans 11:33-36). Gospel -- Jesus asked the disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter replied, "You are the Christ" (Matthew 16:13-20). TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authority of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our matters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves responsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust-the trust that conveys authority and responsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifically that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

1. How do I maintain an authoritative voice to help move authentically and consistently forward in faith? 2. How do my parents, my teachers, and the members of my parish community help me to know my faith and grow in it? Page 2

SANCTUARY LIGHT DEDICATION VELADORA

This month of August, the sanctuary lights at the O Street church are lit in honor of the Most Blessed Sacrament for the special intentions of the Ponce Herrera Family.

Send, O Lord, holy apostles into your Church.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE CO-RESPONSABILIDAD DE TESORO August 13 & 14 St. Mary $ 2,658.00 St. Katherine 350.00 Total 3,008.00 Mission Appeal Community of St. Paul 1,096.00 Building Fund 25.00 May God bless you for your continued support of our church. SECOND COLLECTION Todays second collection is for the Cathedral Maintenance Fund. NOT HIRED, BUT CHOSEN When a company recruits top management the process is detailed and thorough. No company wants less than the best. Contrast this with today's Gospel. Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is. Peter exclaims, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Peter is a good Jew, but an illiterate fisherman, not exactly high on the social ladder. Nevertheless, Jesus saw what this man could become. "You are Peter, and upon this rock [in Greek, petros] I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). The future of our Church, now 1.5 billion people worldwide, lay in Peter's hands. With the power of God, Jesus promised that ultimate evil would never defeat it. Nevertheless, the Church is made up of flawed human beings who sometimes fail. Even Peter himself, Jesus' chosen "rock," failed spectacularly by denying Christ three times. Let's not walk away from failure but strive more to live a faithful Christian life. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW People come to the Church because God calls them. Try volunteering in the parish ministry for people seeking to become Catholic (RCIA), or in a ministry welcoming Catholics who left the Church and want to come home. MISSION STATEMENT As faithful disciples of Christ, we, the Catholic Community of St. Mary & St. Katherine, proclaim our threefold mission: to worship God, to share our faith, and to serve those who are in need.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Holy Fathers August 2011 Intentions

General Intention: That the World Youth Day taking place in Madrid may encourage all the young people of the world to root and found their lives in Christ. Missionary Intention: That Christians of the West, docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, may re-encounter the freshness and enthusiasm of their faith.

In September 2008, Life Teen hosted the first Global Life Night, and as one family we donated over 300,000 pounds of clothing to charity. In September 2009, we moved from clothing to food and were able to donate over 200,000 food items to local food pantries and soup kitchens. In September 2010, we joined together to give drink to the thirsty by collecting change to build wells in Africa. The results were incredible. We donated over $200,000 to build and maintain 18 wells in Ghana, Africa. This year we turn our attention, prayer, and service to some of the most vulnerable in society: the unborn. This years project is to stock the shelves of our local pregnancy resource center with baby items and other essentials.

Nuevo Obispo

Salmo -- Seor, tu amor perdura eternamente; obra tuya soy, no me abandones (Salmo 138 [137]).
