WHY DO WE RESIST CHANGE?

WHY DO WE CHOSE IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION?

WHY DO WE HARASS THE MESSENGERS OF CHANGE?

Changes we have loved

Volatile Organic Compounds

Large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. Odor does not indicate the level of risk from inhalation of this group of chemicals. Examples include benzene, ethylene glycol, toluene, xylene, methylene chloride.

We will copy the OTC rules

Ozone Transport Commission enacted in 2005 A multi-state organization developing solutions to the ground level ozone problem in the Northeast VOC limits are significantly lower than the National Rule They Eliminated traditional solvent (xylene) based construction products

3 Ways to Reduce xylene

Increase solids levels (less solvent)

Illegal to tell customers to dilute with solvent

Eliminate solvent, use water (water-base) Use VOC exempt solvents

How Solvents Work

Wet

Coalescing

Dry

Their business is just like ours

SOLIDS AND SOLVENT Cement and water (Sand and rocks are just fillers) Too much solvent and the stuff is no good Too many solids and the finisher cant work with it Add latex and it explodes in your hand

Think WATER of convenience SOLVENT

Problems with high solids

It just doesnt work

Poor workability Difficult drying Solvent Entrapment Milking Build up Discoloring

Water Based Cure & Seals

the good the bad and the ugly

Sensitive to temperature & humidity Slow or never drying Freezing in the truck Higher minimum temps Some products may blush (turn white) when exposed to long-term moisture Recoating issues

Application of Water Based Cure & Seals

Must use a clean sprayer Co-mingling of water based and solvent based products will cause clogging Spray on thin and back roll applying too heavily will cause discoloration Should not be applied in cool weather (less than 40 F) Products will freeze

Solvent Based

Water Based Which one penetrated more? Is one molecule smaller?

Exempt Solvents
Several solvents are exempt from VOC calculations because they do not react in the atmosphere to create ozone. There are two exempt solvents used to formulate concrete cure & seals that are compliant with VOC regulations: Acetone tert-Butyl Acetate (TBAC)

Exempt Solvents = $$$

Cost more Flammable / explosive Insurance, storage New sprayers: Chapin Xtreme Your old seals will melt Much harder to apply Odor, safety issues during application not good inside

FLASH POINT
THE POINT AT WHICH A LIQUID BECOMES A GAS HOW EXPLOSIVE IF IGNITED

DEGREES FAHRENHEIT WATER 217 DIESEL FUEL 126 MINERAL SPIRITS 104 TBACK 40 XYLENE 29 MEK 16 ACETONE -4 GASOLINE -45

Fast evaporation rate of exempt solvents will change the way cure & seals are applied.

Note distance between spray nozzle and concrete:

The problems for us pertain to the film forming products.

We all have issues, now we have more issues.

Retrain our industry Provide effective curing Provide effective protection Provide good looking work

Three different sets of problems

Inside

:dusting Decorative: appearance Outside: durability

Inside floors
Film forming products Must be water based odors and volatility Must be compatible with glues, adhesives, and other coatings Temperature issues are easier Really, why not just use plastic and do it correctly? Buy better concrete and no curing

Decorative flatwork
We must help our trades find good acting, high gloss, durable, expensive materials. Possibly water in summer and solvent in winter. This is a clue: What do finishers do when they need help with concrete finishing?

Outside placements

Effective curing is more important Who gets the call for spaling issues?

I knew that was bad mud.

Cost is more important Contractors will cheat more They cheat now This is the category we will all suffer

What to do?

Talk to a supplier of curing products to find a product that works. Do not accept their opinion Find the benefits Feel the problems Lose some money Alienate some contractors and owners We need guinea pigs.

What to do?

With the probable reduction of curing effectiveness: We should increase our promotion of penetrating water repellants for outside work. Not film forming sealers they are now more difficult to use. there will be a learning curve.

Is this our problem?

Trouble rolls down hill, money rolls up hill.

Why Water Repellent Sealers

They soak into concrete and chemically react with alkaline materials in the surface They form a chloride barrier and internal seal Repels water based chemistry only, not oil Treated concrete repels water and salt Improves freeze-thaw durability No change in appearance (invisible if done correctly) Lasts much longer than a film forming sealer

SO WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT VOC CHANGES ?

Compensated mixes need more help than cement only mixes. Green mixes are here to stay Curing is essential for our products durability and strength. Our job is evolving to be about esthetics. Our contractors will make mistakes, our customers will suffer.

So why do I care?
It is about feelings. How does the owner feel about the work that was done? We all remember what we felt much longer than what we thought. Think wife Do we think satisfied or feel satisfied? BMW said it in 2009
