LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Brrrr – Old man winter has finally paid us a visit. I was
beginning to wonder if we were ever going to get a taste of
him….well, we got it & hopefully he won’t stick around long.
BIKER FRIENDLY DIRECTORY 42
The weather was crazy last month wasn’t it? We definitely got
spoiled for a little while enjoying temps in the 70’s – it made for
some fantastic riding though!
We’re definitely in high gear now as we all get ready for the
kickoff of the 2007 Riding Season. Beginning with the March
2007, “Spring Breakout” issue, we’re going to go ALL GLOSS!
CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS 53
This has been a long time coming & we’re really excited it.
Each page of the magazine will be printed on the high quality
gloss pages as you see each month on our center calendar
insert. We’re not changing who we are inside but we’ll be
bringing to you a better quality magazine with clean, crisp text &
vibrant colored pictures that you’ll be able to enjoy month after

month. Also the best news for our advertisers is that we are not
increasing our ad prices so everyone can afford the benefits of
advertising in a gloss magazine without that “gloss” price.
In this issue we’re introducing the premiere of our new music
page “Sound Check”, hosted by Jen Martin, featuring musical
talents from around the region that play at your local bars, rallies

& different venues for the bikers. Many of you will be familiar
with these artists as you have seen them on stage & Jen will
be bringing you a little more personal look into who they, where
they came from & where they’re going. We’re hoping that you’ll
enjoy this new addition as it brings you just a little closer & even

The Lynchburg area motorcycling community lost a

dear friend in December. On the morning of the 27th,
Lee Garrett was found dead in his beloved Marilyn’s
Hot Rod Cafe. The local Sheriff’s department ruled the
cause of death as an accidental gunshot wound.
Lee had been a strong supporter of Lynchburg’s Bikers
for many years. His former establishment, Badlanders
Saloon was THE place to go for many in the Hill City
and hosted several charity events. After opening the
smaller Marilyn’s, Lee continued to support motorcy-
clists. Marilyn’s earned the title “Lynchburg’s Premiere
Old School Biker Bar.” Everyone was family at Mari-
lyn’s. From his unique annual Bike Show to his support
of countless charity poker runs, Toy Runs, Angel Trees
and other charities, Lee was a class act.
Lee joined the Iron Horse Cavalry Chapter of ABATE of
Virginia several years ago and became Lynchburg’s first
business member. That membership was at the Plati-
num level, which is the highest business support level.
Iron Horse Cavalry meetings were held at Marilyn’s in
which Lee actively participated. Our annual Christmas
Party is held in the basement.
Myself and Jeff Martin have a saying that “All roads
lead to Marilyn’s.” Whether a local day ride, all day
cruise or weeklong trip, we always stopped at Marilyn’s
on the way home. Marilyn’s is home and Lee will be
sorely missed.
How much Lee will be missed was evident on Friday
night as the parking lot of Whitten’s Funeral Home on
Timberlake Road filled beyond capacity. After paying
their respects, customers, competitors and musicians
all over town paused to toast and pay tribute to Lee.
The next morning, scores of area motorcyclists met at
Marilyn’s to ride together for the funeral services. After
an emotional service, most Bikers stayed to help escort
the procession 40+ miles to the gravesite in Phenix,
Virginia. The Outriders did an excellent job of block-
ing intersections and keeping the procession together.
Following the gravesite service, an Iron Horse Cavalry/
ABATE insignia and an Army of Northern Virginia battle
flag were draped over the casket. Then about a dozen
or so of us took turns at the shovels and we buried our
friend.
The next night was New Year’s Eve. Lee’s wife Denise,
better known as Bert, courageously opened Marilyn’s to
give Lee a proper send off. He wouldn’t have had it any
other way.
The Iron Horse Cavalry Chapter/ABATE has scheduled
a public memorial run in Lee’s honor for April 14, 2007.
More information will be available at abateofva.com.

Dave Sutton

Letting Go
To let go doesn’t mean to stop caring;
it means I can’t do it for someone else.

To let go is not to cut myself off,

To let go is not to enable, but to allow learning

from natural consequences.

To let go is to admit powerlessness,

which means the outcome is not in my hands.

To let go is not to try to change or blame anoth-

er, I can only change myself.

To let go is not to care for, but to care about.

To let go is not to fix, but to be supportive.

To let go is not to judge,

but to allow another to be a human being.

To let go is not to be in the middle arranging

all the outcomes, but to allow others to affect

To let go is not to be protective,

it is to permit another to face reality.

To let go is not to deny but to accept.

To let go is not to nag, scold, or argue,

WALT REDMOND JR
Those familiar with the local music scene in the Hampton
roads and the Outer Banks, are most likely to have heard
the name Walt Redmond Jr. With his credible work ethic
and exceptional talent, he is quickly becoming a crowd
pleasing favorite at each venue he plays as a solo artist
and with his band ANOTHER LIFE.

Who is He?
Throughout his musical career, Redmond found his way
into various garage bands, singing vocals only to honor the
music that they played and by accident he realized that he
had a trainable singing voice. With the power of his music
career taking him over and the idea of making it big flowing
beneath his veins, he found his way to California. A whirl-
wind of drugs and alcohol married to his music he found
that his life was motionless in the sense of moving forward
with his music career. With all the strength he could muster
up, he checked himself into rehab and walked out a new
man with the determination to renew his reputation as an
artist and prove that music was in fact the only addiction he
couldn’t live without.
“When people get out of rehab, they rarely have something
to grab onto to keep them away from their addiction, I had
music…and that was all I needed”~ Walt Redmond Jr.

What’s he doing now?

Walt Redmond Jr. has collaborated an exemplary musical
ensemble consisting of Scott Travis(drums), who some
may recognize his former connection with the band Judas
Priest. Dave Norris (Bass), and Anthony Rosano (guitar).
With Redmond taking lead vocals and guitar, each of these
exceptional ingredients makes up ANOTHER LIFE. They
are currently on hiatus reworking their musical direction.
Redmond on the other hand, still continues to work 6 nights
a week at local venues across Hampton roads. He works
side by side with his father Walt Redmond Sr.
“Music is everything to me, it’s my life, my love, my bread
and butter, I don’t know anything else but music”~ Walt
Redmond Jr. Look forward to a few CD’s to be made avail-
able to the public within the next few months. Redmond has
been re mastering his original pieces, as well as working on
a live album with his father Walt Redmond Sr. Stay tuned
and pay attention, there are many great things to come for
our artist of the month. To find out dates and scheduled

THUNDERon the road
After my nice travel break I figured I would find a good location that
incorporated a good ride as well as a good destination for the readers.
First off, let me say we did this ride between Christmas and New Years
and we made the mistake of listening to the weather man. Forecast;
60 degrees and sunshine with a 20% chance of rain, actual weather;
intense fog, 47 degrees, and about 10 minutes of sunshine. I rode
with Mike Imprivento from the Motorcycle Mania talk show which is on
Sunday mornings 8-10am on 850AM. Mike is also the Vice President

of The Goodfellows Brotherhood Riding Club. The club Tailgunner,

Ray, and my friend from the Coast Guard Jose also accompanied us.
We left Williamsburg and took a nice ride down through West Point
on Routes 33 and 30. After that we shot over to Route 17 and took it
all the way down to 301 through Tappahannock. Thankfully, when we
went through Essex, we passed a Wal-Mart so we were able to stop in
and buy warm dry socks and hand warmer packets for our gloves. The
cold was not so bad but we were soaked from the thick fog. We took
301 straight down to Maryland over the Patomic River Bridge. That
was probably the first time I was actually scared on my bike because
the visibility was about 20 feet and cars were flying by at about 70mph.
We finally made it to our destination…Apehangers Bar and Grill on
301 at 9100 Crain Hwy., Bel Alton, MD.
If you have not been to this place yet, make it a point to visit. We
were greeted by Stacy, the beautiful bartender, who was a sight for
sore eyes (and sore butts). Apehangers is decorated with the finest
motorcycle paraphernalia and they even have two bikes hanging from
the ceiling draped in bras that I am sure got thrown up there during
some late night debauchery. We ordered lunch and grabbed some hot
coffee and I will definitely say the food is great. Stacy informed me
that in the summer there is a tiki bar out back and the place really fills
up. They have live music every week, pool tables, and a host of other
biker special events.
We had slightly better weather the ride home and stopped at my
favorite rest stop on the corner of 301 and 17 called Hornes. It’s an
old throw back mom and pop style gas station and diner. We ran into
a bunch of bikers who were just getting back from a fund raiser for
cold weather shelters. I think that is great, bikers riding in the cold so
that other people do not have to sleep in it! The back roads are great
to ride on and it’s only a few hours trip. All in all we did 300 miles and
we were home before dark. Mike gets the hard-core award because
he did the ride on a rigid and I get the bonehead award for dropping
my cell in the toilet! I am writing this article on my way to Africa via
Brussels, which I will cover in the next issue. If you have any ideas for
some future travel-articles or want to accompany me on a ride, shoot
me an email. Ride Safe and see you on the highway! Visit Apehangers
on the web at www.apehangersbar.com.

If your traveling takes you to the Eastern Panhandle of
West Virginia I know of a shop that’s a “must stop.” C&A
Bike Accessories opened in March 2006 and quickly
became a “hotspot” for area motorcyclists. The shop is
family-owned and -operated by Chris and Amy. Even
their kids, Riannah and Angelina, help out. Chris and
Amy opened C&A with the intentions of offering parts and
accessories for any bike, metric or American, that rolled
into their lot. They have a wide variety of apparel and
many other goodies from Kuryakyn, Show Chrome, Bikers
Choice, Drag Specialties, Tucker Rocky, Parts Unlimited,
and more. They even carry ATV and dirt bike parts and
accessories! If they don’t have what you’re looking for

Racing. I could not
be more pleased with
the performance of
my team, the V-Rod
Destroyer and every-
one who helped along
the way. Together, we
completed a season
that was full of high-
powered excitement and down-to-the-wire competition
which began in Gainesville, FL and ended November
12th in Las Vegas at the JIMS Las Vegas Nationals Na-
tional Championship.
The AHDRA Nationals had over 400 race entries
that weekend which is a record turn out and made for
great entertainment for the nearly 10,000-nitro fans
that showed up to take in the action. On Saturday, The
Hacienda Harley-Davidson qualified 6th with a time of
9.41 at 139.29 mph in the V-Rod Destroyer Division. But,
we missed the cut for the 16 pilot field in the Super Gas
Division. I signed posters all weekend and had my new
VTRaceGirl disposable cameras on display along with the
very popular VTRaceGirl T-shirts. VTR “Team 2006”
did a great job that weekend and I must give special
thanks to Mickey Eddinger, Brandon White, Mitch, Bailey
Whittaker and Matt Smith for their expertise and gener-
osity to help me go faster. All in all, it was a fun packed
weekend and made for a great way to end the season.
The Team goal for 2006 was to be competitive at every
event and get a win. We did that and a whole lot more.
The team landed 1 win, 2 Runner-ups, 1 Semi-Final and
2 Quarter Finals. In the Super Gas Division we finished a
respectable 6th place in the Nation out of 89 pilots. In the
Super Gas Western Division we finished a respectable
3rd place and in the V-Rod Western Division we finished
4th. Did I forget to mention the Land Speed Record at
the Bonneville Salt Flats on September 4th 2006? Par-
don me for not saying sooner and allow me to give spe-
cial props to Keith Ball and his team at 5-Ball racing for
letting me ride the “Salt Shaker” in to the record books.
Well, since the 2006 season is over and its time to get
ready for the 2007 season, what better time to make a
major VTR announcement. It is my pleasure to tell you,
VTR Team 2007 has a new racing partner and corporate
sponsor. GoDaddy.com has joined us for what promises
to be an exciting season of racing. Very special thanks
goes to GoDaddy.com and the hard working staff, for
their support. Did I forget to mention that I’ll be in the
GoDaddy.com Super-Bowl commercial on February 4th?
You do not want to miss it.

Let’s race!

I understand the climber’s need to challenge them-

can grow and learn while exploring this beautiful earth.
Yet the lesson is always clear… nature is indifferent to
the struggle for survival. Perhaps the creator is telling
us that whatever the outcome, we shall return again to
struggle and survive.
For some people it is adrenalin that comes with risky
adventure that they seek. But for me risk was always
something to be managed and adrenalin was to be held
in check. There were many times for me in the out-
doors and on the bike when too much risk or adrenalin
would have proved fatal. For Kelly James, the accident

When I was 64 I decided I wanted to learn to ride a
motorcycle, having always been a passenger. I had
given up riding and training Arabian horses so I
wanted a new adventure and I wanted to meet other
people who ride. So I signed up for the Motorcycle
Safety Course and was so intimidated that I put down
the kickstand and walked away. I purchased this
1974 Honda CB200 with only 1100 miles on it. It was
stored in a garage for years. And so I learned and
practiced and rode on this bike. When I turned 65
two things happened, I received Medicare and I took
the test on my Honda and passed. A momentous
year for me. I continued riding the Honda but it is not
fast enough to go on the highways, so I had to stay
on the back roads, which was fun. My Husband al-
ways followed on his Fat Boy, but complained that he
could not get it out of 2nd gear when he followed me.
We went to a local Trike dealer and I tried one out and
fell in love with the safety of 3 wheels. I purchased a
2003 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and had it con-
verted to a Trike. Took me awhile to get used to the
way a Trike handles, especially on tight turns, but at
least I could keep up with the 2 wheel Harley’s. Jack
& I joined the newly formed HOG club, the Eastern
Shore Chapter of Ocean City, Md. in January 2006. I
became the Newsletter Editor and will continue to for
the second year. Jack & I will be driving to Sturgis
this year with the Pocomoke Hogs. We will have a
convoy of 4 vehicles and will trailer most of the way,
possibly taking turns riding the Bikes. Riding motor-

I started riding a motorcycle when I was 16 years
old. That was 50 years ago when the population
was a lot less than today. Everyone in the Balti-
more neighborhood knew everyone, you did not
need a special license or a helmet and the streets
weren’t crowded. I didn’t have a tag on my first
bike and was never stopped by a policeman. And
if I did get in trouble with the local law, he knew my
Dad and would come to our house and tell on me
and Dad would give out the punishment. When I
got married I had no use for a 2 wheeler and had to
get a 4 wheeler. In the 70’s I was free to purchase
a motorcycle but didn’t keep it very long. Then in
the 80’s when Peg & I got married we were busy
working almost 7 days a week. We lived on the
water and had a boat and when we got off work
we would take a relaxing ride in the Newport Bay.
The first DelMarVa Bike Week was held at Camp
Whaley on Rt. 50. We did not have a Bike at that
time so we took our van but was unable to get in.
Only the 2 wheelers could gain entrance because
of limited parking. Just looking at all the Bikes on
the road prompted us to decide to buy one, a Har-
ley, which I would ride and Peg would be a passen-
ger. We took a trip to Laurel, Maryland and spent
the night with one of our daughters in anticipation
of stopping at the Annapolis Harley dealer in the
morning. Peg had called them and they had a few
used Harleys for sale. However, that was not to
be at that time. The next morning I was rushed to
the Howard County hospital where I spent several
days. In time I did recover and purchased a Har-
ley-Davidson Fat Boy. However, Peg no longer
wanted to ride on the back. She wanted her own
Bike and today rides a Harley Trike. We are Retired
