The Tree?

By an unknown author

A few weeks ago, a Sunni friend mentioned to me that the infamous forbidden tree is that of knowledge. I have heard that argument before by some Christians, but I never read any verse of the Quran that makes any such claims about this tree. I was shocked when I read a similar argument by one of your authors that I have great respect for. Specifically, I quote the following passage from Rachel Singers article "INTERCESSION: The Mythologies of Unauthorized Prayer -Brokers." "The characteristics of cunning, ego and desire existed in the tree and contact with it gave Adam and Eve and the rest of us, the ability to see, hear, think and challenge God as Iblis had done." I was compelled to write to you because I didnt expect to hear something which had no basis in Quran on such a fundamental subject from the people who uphold ONLY the Quran. I dont know from where you got the notion that the tree gave us the ability to see, hear, think and challenge God, but it sounds very much like what some people believe ab out this being the tree of knowledge. Here is what I know. The Quran constantly tells us that it is the people who have knowledge who believe in God. Therefore, the more knowledge one has the better off he or she is. The ability to see, hear, and think f or one self is a good thing (7:179, 10:100). It is regarded as a sin by the priestly class of the dark ages, the fabricators of Hadith, and herds of both doctrines blind followers. If the actual nature of the tree was important to our faith, God would h ave explained it to us in the Quran. My personal interpretation of the tree is that it is an allegory (2:26) and that we need to look at the morale behind this allegory. God told Adam and Eve through his words not to come near an entity (the forbidden tree ) for their own benefit (in order not to be unjust) (2:35, 7:19). The Devil told them to taste the tree for their own benefit (to become angels or immortals) (7:20). Note that the devil did not ask them to disobey God directly, instead he fabricated a jus tification under the pretext of benefiting them. The act of them eating from the tree is the effect of them not adhering to the word of God and following the fabricated lies of the Devil. In this context, the tree itself is not important, the root cause fo r being expelled from heaven is that Adam and Eves diverted from Gods words and followed satanic lies. If so, then how many of us commit the original sin on a daily basis!! The way to counter the lies of the Devil is simple. To our advantage, the Devil is so stupid that he hasnt changed his tactics in all that time. To this day, he and his followers attempt to divert us from the word of God by

fabricating lies which claim to be beneficial to us. It is probable that the first people who fabricated lies about Jesus being the son of God had a justification. Perhaps to help Christianity spread in the Roman empire by molding it into Roman pagan beliefs. Similarly, people who fabricated Hadith may have thought that they were doing Muslims a favor. Such justifications may include gains in political power or curbing the spread of rabies (Hadiths against dogs). God gave us the tool to fight back, Quran, the absolute truth that defeats the lies of the devil. Do not accept anything other than the Quran which you cannot verify for yourself. The main criteria for acceptance is that it cannot contradict the Quran. The second criteria is that it cannot contradict the best of knowledge that God made us discover (17:36). The seriousness of the lie about the tree being that of knowledge becomes apparent as it is obviously intended to undermine the second criteria. If we apply the above criteria to the statement which claims the forbidden tree is that of knowledge, we find that this lie doesnt pass the first crit eria. Gods word is telling us to seek knowledge, knowledge is almost synonymous with belief in God and His word, disbelievers are constantly described in the Quran as ignorant. The devil lies try to justify for us the exact opposite of the Quran, that kno wledge is bad, that it got us kicked out from heaven, it is better to stay ignorant. If countering the devils lies is so simple how come most dont find it easy? Forgetfulness and arrogance are the reason. We have to remember to examine every word, action, and belief in light of the above two criteria: Quran and then the knowledge that God made us discover. We simply have to accept that certain things we dont have knowledge of yet and in this case it is best not to be arrogant and to heed the exam ple of the angels in (2:32). Similar logic can applied to other Satanic lies such as that Satan first approached Eve in the form of a snake and that Eve made Adam do it. All those lies are intended to foster enmity between the genders.
