RELIGION AS AN AREA OF KNOWLEDGE 2

GOD MATTERS XS IB CLE 2011-2012 Full Name Chase Yao Section H4G IB 4 LC#

Note: This is your digital worksheet. You will nd the instructions for todays module here. Perform the requested tasks using this Pages le. In other words, make it your own. Thank you!

Part One: YOUR Epistemological World Views Summarize here your ndings (even if tentative!) about your theories of knowledge. Domains Natural Science Item #s 1, 5, 14 YOUR world view evaluativist Brief Reason + Remarks
There can be many theories but one can show more important ndings. Social sciences are similar to the nat. Sci. In the sense that there can be different explanations but one is more correct than the other. I feel that the arts are more for evaluativists since the concept of beautiful art is dependent on one persons appreciation of the art, but though this may seem relative, there are standards in art that make art works nicer than others. Morality can have many theories but only one can make sure the human race still exist I feel that religion is more relativist since each person may have their own belief, but all of their beliefs point to peace.

Part Two: Ways of Knowing How important are the different Ways of Knowing in the different domains? Rate them from 1 to 10 according to importance, with 10 as VERY IMPORTANT. If there are other ways of knowing/judging, use the last column and specify. Domains Natural Science Social Science Art Morality Religion Sense Perception 9 2 10 2 2 Reason 10 10 5 10 7 Language 2 3 5 6 10 Emotion 5 8 8 10 9 Others?

Part Three: AUTHORITY and/or EVIDENCE When you justify claims, how much do you actually rely on External Authority and Direct Evidence for every domain? Assign a percentage to each one per domain (Just make an estimate, so NO decimal points--e.g., 25.2321%!). Make sure both total 100%. Domains Natural Science % AUTHORITY 50 % EVIDENCE 50 100% Brief Reason + Remarks
Undoubtedly, natural sciences rely heavily on evidences, although it is quite far fetched for scientists to nd solutions to these questions without the help of previously established theories. Like Natural Sciences, Social science relies heavily on evidence that can be seen in the tests, surveys and such, but equally important to it are the previously established theories. Art is very subjective in nature in the sense that interpretations are hardly ever similar, but there are times wherein a vast majority of people appreciate a certain piece of art, this is because there are some set standards. I feel that morality should rely solely on evidence because it is based on the hard facts visible in the crime scene that one may make a decision based on ethics. Moreover, there is no one authority that dictates what one person should do or shouldt do, since everyone has different views on humanity. Religion depends heavily on the idea of an authority gure who explains why things are the way they are. Although it is hard to discount the fact that evidence is needed from these authorities before we start to believe in what they proclaim.

Some learnings, comments, connections... Going back to part 2 of this worksheet, I found it interesting that most of the important ways of knowing fell under the categories of reason and emotion. This suggests that I have a more evaluativist stance on the areas of knowledge.
