Onnwals merchants, though both daring and wealthy, wielded little power before the Occupation. Competition between the rival merchant houses was fierce. Such was the fractious nature of Onnwalon merchants that the popular phrase to squabble like a Scant trader was coined to describe a noisy and boisterous dispute. Many smaller firms were either wiped out or bankrupted by the Occupation. Only those firms with substantial resources abroad, such as the politically powerful Merchant House of Carbani, survived. Trade with Nyrond and Irongate has resumedmainlyfoodstuffsaswellasthreeof Onnwalsfourtraditionalstaples:pearls, silver and salt. Though happy to provide economic support, Cobb Darg has been most reluctant to commit Irongates forces to the war. Sunndi has been similarly reticent.

Zilchus: As a trading nation Zilchus is a popular deity in Onnwal, overseeing affairs of money, business, and prestige and influence. Priests of Zilchus regularly oversaw that fair trading was observed in markets throughout Onnwal. Many were wealthy merchants in their own right and acted as diplomats. The High Tradepriest of Zilchus was an influential advisortotheSzeks. The Brotherhood saw their wealth systematically stripped before they were levelled. Some, especially in the east, fled to Irongate or the Headlands. A number act as diplomatsinIrongateandabroad, pleadingthe rebel case. Others seek to reestablish vitally needed trading links. Oeridian Agricultural Gods: Telchur, Atroa, Sotillon, Wenta and Velnius are collectively revered as agricultural gods in Onnwal especially in the agricultural heartlands of Gilderond, The Eastern Marchlands and the AzureCoast.Theirpriestsarepopularwiththe common folk, from whom they are often drawn. The Church suffered terribly during the Occupation, like the other Oeridian faiths. Shrineswerelevelledandpriestswerehunted. The clergy often took great risks to try and protect their flock and many paid with their lives for their devotion. However the church has no formal hierarchy, thus its structure survived theOccupation betterthan others. It has emerged from the dark times almost as strong as ever, with common folk stepping forwardtofillthegapsleftbythefallen. Pholtus: This faith was brought to Onnwal withtheforcesofAerdy.TheclergyofPholtus actedasJudgesoftheSessions, presidingover the law courts of the land. The Prime of Onnwal has traditionally been the high priest of Pholtus but the Church never had a widespreadfollowingamongthecommonfolk except in the Eastern Marchlands. TheScarletBrotherhood
The Scarlet Brotherhood has thrown off its guise of an insular monastic order and emerged as the ruling body of an empire of unknownextentstretchingfromOnnwaltothe sweltering jungles of Hepmonaland, from the Lordship of the Isles to the Hold of the Sea Princes. According to the dwur sage Morrev Ironseeker (formerly of Scant, but now of Irongate), the Brotherhoods goal is nothing lessthatthedominationoftheFlanaessunder the rule of a Second Suel Imperium. They are prepared to use any means necessary to achievethisend. Once Onnwal had fallen into the Brotherhoods hands, governance of the so calledObedientStatewasplacedinthehands of Exalted Sister Kuranyie, Keshkal and Shepherd of Onnwal. She replaced the traditional system of government with a network of kesh administrators responsible for the running of a village or town. The Brotherhood controls the ports of Scant, Obelton and Gullhaven, as well as the strategic towns of Halmarn, Myrhill and Tarlesan. Their navy and summoned seas monstersretainastrangleholdovertheStraits of Gearnat, extracting exorbitant tariffs from any ship wishing to make the passage of the narrows unmolested. Though a number of states have expressed their outrage at this practice, none have made any attempt to challengetheblockade.

SlaversandSlavelords
In the early years of the current century, the coasts of Onnwal were terrorised by slavers who would carry off entire villages. They showed few scruples and less mercy towards their victims, carrying off man, woman and child to suffer often short and brutal lives of bondage. TheFreeStatemadegreateffortstoputan end to this scourge but to no avail. The slavers seemed almost prescient in their ability to avoid the ships of the Free State Navy. This was no accident, for they had friends in very high places. Kosrel Relaster, Duke of the Storm Coast and grandfather of the current duchess, was in league with the slavers. In return for a cut of the profits, the dukeconspiredtodeliverhisownpeopleinto bondage. Kosrel would warn them of naval movements and of vulnerable targets. OrderoftheGoldenSun
TheOrderoftheGoldenSun,commonlycalled the Glaives of Azharadian, is Onnwals only order of chivalry. Devoted to the memory of the Aerdi general Azharadian and his patron Heironeous, it is comprised a core of knights, all of noble blood, supported by a body of commoners and priests of the Invincible One called the Glaives Cohort. Many members of the Order were slain during the Night of Scarlet Knives after being lured back to their chapter house in Scant, where they were ambushed by Brotherhood forces. The surviving Glaives are divided by mistrust, certain that one among their number is a traitor. They have been polarised into two camps: the more senior Glaives supporting Duke Gellen Cadwale, the most senior surviving Glaive, while the younger Glaives and the Cohort rallying about Baron Halrend Lorendrenn, who suspects Cadwale of being thetraitor.

TheJadeMask
The Jade Mask is the name for the Onnwalon Chapter of the Iron Leagues diplomatic (i.e. espionage) corps of the same name. Most Onnwalons are unaware of its existence and that is the way that the Mask likes it. A Gazetteer of Onnwal
Overview
Onnwal occupies the entirety of the Dragonshead Peninsula, which separates the Sea of Gearnat and Dunhead Bay from the AzureSea.ThePeninsulaisdividedbetweena rugged and tortuous maze of limestone hills called the Headlands and rich, wellwatered lowlands.Wavesofsettlersandinvaders, from the dwur and noniz in the depths of the past, to the Aerdi have called Onnwal their home over time. Its long coastlines have meant Onnwal has traditionally been a maritime nation. The forests were felled to build ships and the fields yielded bounties of grain and otherfruitsofthesoil. Onnwal was once a vassal of the Great Kingdom and its independence was forged in the Iron Rebellion of 447 CY. Though Onnwal existed under threat of invasion from the South Province, for over a century war never touchedher.Beneaththeaegisofhernavyand her allies in the Iron League, both noble and peasant lived out the limit of their days in peace. In 584 CY the Scarlet Brotherhood shattered this idyll forever. Onnwal has since known only oppression, rebellion and strife. The land is divided into two camps: the resurgent Free State and the Scarlet Brotherhood.ThoughtheGreyhawkWarshas been consigned to history elsewhere in the Flanaess,inOnnwalitneverended. The Scarlet Brotherhood holdsthe eastern Cantreds of Halmarn, Low Bergard and Gullhaven. The invading forces have fortified the approaches to Scant. TheFourProvinces
The Free State was traditionally divided into four provinces: Gilderond in the west, the Azure Coast in the South, the Storm Coast in the north and the Eastern Marchlands on the shores of Dunhead Bay. The majority of this territory is once more under the rule of the SzekofOnnwal,JianDestron.

Gilderond
The largest province of Onnwal, Gilderond encompassestheplainsandrivervalleysofthe GilderleainthewestandtheSilvervaleinthe east. The Gilderlea is generally flat, rolling country dotted with farming villages. The broad valley of the Bergard river forms Onnwals agricultural heartland. Varl's Keep is one of the main points of contact between the Citadels of the Headland Dwur and the Free State and there is much traffic alongtheVerganninTrail. The Baron's duties as acting Duke mean that he is frequently detained with affairs of the Province and the State in Killdeer. When he does manage to escape the capital, he is accompanied by six of the famed Vergannin Guard. Elwerd has tried, so far without success, to persuade the Headlander Dwur to commit their forces to the cause of the Free State. So far, however, his entreaties, though greeted sympathetically in Vergannin, have metwithlittlesuccess.

TheHeadlands
The Headlands form the spine of the Dragonshead Peninsula. Mainly composed of limestone, the hills are a maze of steepsided tors riddled with natural cavern systems. Blessed with abundant rainfall, the highlands are clothed in lush vegetation. Scored by thousands of streams, which form tortuous systems of valleys and gorges. The Headlands are generally considered impassable except forahandfuloftracksandpasses.

TheHeadlanders
Known as Headlanders to the people of the Lowlands the Flan tribes of Onnwal are the last vestiges of the first human inhabitants of the Dragonshead. These people have herded theiranimalsanddweltintheirstonehillforts since before the coming of Azharadian. Collectively the Headlanders call themselves thePeopleoftheDreaming. There is a long standing enmity between the Headlanders and the Dwur and Noniz of the Headlands, the cause of which goes back through the centuries. Wyrms dwelt here and the Olve shunned the Dragonshead as a place of dragons, nightmares and madness. So terrible was the Idol that is was saidthattheverysightofitalonecoulddrivea manintoaninsanehomicidalrage. However the Ial Iorneh was, in that time, the realm of Great Wyrms, the Childern of Tiamat, and Weaver of the Slumbering Ones nightmares and guardians of the Gyre. Adventuring Within Onnwal

ProblemSolvingand Investigation
Oneofthemainproblemsfacingtherebelsare the constant attempts by the Brotherhood to infiltrate the resistance at all levels. In the past the Brotherhood have proven to be mastersatinsertingtheiragentsintoalllevels of Onnwalish society. Many in the resistance fear that there could yet be sleeper agents buried deep undercover waiting for the right timetostrike.BothJianDestronandRakehell Chert have both been the target of several assassination attempts since the fall of Onnwal. Both must now mask their true location and appearance through disguises both mundane and magical. PCs could be recruited by the rebel spymaster, a shadowy mysteriousfigure, toattempttorootoutsuch agents.Thisworkwouldbeextremelydifficult and dangerous bring the players into contact with some of the most deadly and dedicated membersoftheBrotherhood. Another area open to investigation is Onnwalitself.Thelandhasbeenoccupiedfor millennia by various peoples and many have lefttheirmarkonthelandscapeintheformsof ruins, monuments and fortifications. Who knows what could lie undiscovered here? There are also several chains of islands lying offbothcoastsofthecountrythatcouldprove useful bases for rebel forces if they were investigatedandmappedproperly.

HackandSlash
As a country embroiled in a bloody rebellion Onnwal offers unparalleled opportunities for the player who enjoys hack and slash. Although largescale battles are at this time unknown the whole land is embroiled in a seriesofskirmishesandraidsdesignedtogive side the upper hand. Player characters can battle against the Brotherhood, their savage jungle warrior allies, Hochebi soldiery, the pirates of the Pomarj or possibly even the infamousslavers.Playerscouldbeinvolvedin any number of small defensive and offensive actions.

Roleplaying
As much a physical battle the Onnwalish rebellionisastruggleofwordsandideals. The rebel camp is made up of allies thrown together out of necessity. Warriors and soldiersofOnnwalrubshoulderswiththieves and smugglers while nobles fight alongside peasants and common folk. Many different priesthoods, all with their own agendas and belief systems, have lent their strength to the rebellion and although all these different factions have a common goal the defeat of the Scarlet Brotherhood and the liberation of Onnwal many of them cannot agree on a strategytoaccomplishthis. Manyinthemovementresentthefactthat Rakehell Chert, in their opinion is a common thiefnothingmore, enjoyssuchahighlevelof powerandrespectfromJianDestron.Intheir eyes there should be only one leader of the rebellionandthatshouldbetherightfulheirto the throne. Many agitate for this while the original members of the Wreckers point out that if it were not for them there would probably be no organised rebellion. Many of the thieves are extremely uncomfortable working so closely with soldiers, city guards and law enforcement types and have grave misgivings about allowing them accessed to the thieves many hidden bases and safe houses.Indeedmanyintheresistancesuspect theexistenceofanothernetworkofbasesand facilities even now being kept a secret from them.

AdventureThemes
Listed below can be found some general guidelinesonthethemesofadventuresuitable forOnnwal.Thisshouldnotbeconsideredan exhaustivelist.

StruggleagainsttheBrotherhood
This is the central theme of the campaign in Onnwal and as such offers almost limitless opportunitiesforadventure. Rescue: The Brotherhood has taken many hostagesduringtheiroccupation.Muchofthe hostagetakingoccurredwhenSisterKuranyie ordered the populace to give up one member of each family to ensure that noone else fled to Nyrond. What happened to these people? Where are they? Are they still alive? The Brotherhoodmaystillholdhostagesonalocal level and PCs could be hired, or ordered to retrievethem.

43

Hold at all costs: The Brotherhood has launchedasurpriseattackagainstsomeofthe rebels holdings and the players have been orderedtoholdthefortuntilreinforcements can arrive. An interesting variant on the traditional approach to adventuring this scenarios main events revolving around the PCs defending a position, fortification of dungeonandnotattackingit.

Attack! The players have been chosen to participateinanattackagainstaBrotherhood fortificationorstrongpoint.Challengeswould involve getting into the objective unseen and sabotaging vital defences or equipment. Alternatively they could participate in a full scaleattackdesignedtodrivetheBrotherhood fromoneoftheirenclavesbeyondthewallsof Scant. Spy Hunting: The PCs have been asked to observe and apprehend a suspected Brotherhood agent in a forward base on the storm Coast. PCs would have to observe the individual; and gain evidence of his true loyaltiesbeforeapprehendinghim. LegacyoftheBrotherhood:TheBrotherhood has not only tried to occupy the land of Onnwal, but also the minds of its people. The ScarletOneshavedrivenhomethedoctrineof the superiority of the Suel race using brainwashingaswellasmoresubtlemeansof social control. Even after the liberation, this ordealhasleftscarsonthepeopleofOnnwal. Those that collaborated are hunted down; those that suffered must try to rebuild their lives. Spies and traitors undoubtedly still lurk within Free Onnwal. The old social order and its certainties have been systematically destroyedandnooneissurewhatwillreplace it.Willitbemoblawwheremightmakesright, or will justice and civilisation prevail? The actions of the PCs will be central to the creationoftheneworderforgoodorforill. Suel Backlash: Many folk of Onnwal have begun to associate anything Suel with the Brotherhood. Thus certain Suel deities are beginning to see their worshipper numbers fall as well as a corresponding dip in their influence within the community. Those who also exhibit particularly Suel characteristics (such as a pallid complexion, blond hair and blue eyes) are also beginning to experience a risinglevelofabuseandhostility.

Onnwal contains additional sites designed to facilitate dungeon exploring. The Storm Coast hasmanygoodsitesforlowleveladventuring, including several Flan ruins. Consider the Cadwale Estates the Tunnelling Duke undoubtedly created an extensive dungeon complex. With its close proximity to Longbridgeitcouldmakeagoodsiteforlow level adventures to cut their teeth under the patronage of either Duke Cadwale, the mayor of Longbridge or even the legitimate front of theBlackHoods, theGalathrenas! Adventurers in Onnwal have traditionally been involving in check the ambitions of the South Province or battling against pirates on the Gearnat. These pursuits have left little time for the exploration of the network of tunnelsandpassagesthatarethoughttoexist under the peninsula. Several deep cavern complexes are thought to link with UnderOerth deep below the Headlands. The Dwur could have knowledge or records of these. Finally for highlevel campaigns the Tal Marith and the horrors of the Dreaming Gyre willdefinitelytestthesteel(andsanity)ofany adventuringgroup.

ExplorationtheSurface
Island Hopping: Although Onnwal has been settled for centuries comparatively little is known about the three island chains dotted aroundthecoastsofthepeninsula.PCscould beinstructedtosearchtheseislandseitherfor signs of Brotherhood activity or good anchoragessuitableforuseasrebelbases. Travel: Free Onnwal is desperately short of friends, or more precisely it is desperately short of friends who will support it with monies, equipment and troops. PCs would form part of a unit of specialists tasked to protectanimportantambassadorordiplomat ashetravelstoaforeignland.Suchamission would inevitably involve ocean travel and al theperilsassociatedwiththatpractise.

The Dwur of the Headlands: Demihuman forces could also join the Rebel struggle. However, an alliance between Free Onnwal and the Flan will alienate the Dwur of the Headlands, old foes of the Flan and perhaps precipitate a coup by hardline Dwur priests bent on restoring Theocratic rule to their Citadels. The dwur could bring 2,500 troops including fighters, paladins, rangers and warpriestoflevels18.

Turrosh Mak and the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj: The Brotherhood is in negotiations withtheforcesofthePomarjforassistancein Onnwal. Turrosh Mak has had extensive contact with the Brotherhood in the past. He was one of the original Slavelords and even now heads the new Slavelord operation. He also controls Blue, the porttown from which thepiratestraditionalsail. Although recently wracked by war and strife the Oerth is the site of another larger and altogether more magical conflict.
