PROBLEM-SHEET-I

Measurement,Vector and Projectile Motion Q-1-The height of mercury column in a barometer in a Calcutta laboratory was recorded to be
75cm.Calculate this pressure in S.I. and C.G.S. units using the following data: specific gravity of mercury=13.6,density of water=10^3kg/m^3, g=9.8m/s^2 at Calcutta.Pressure=h g in usual symbols. Q-2-Express the power of a 100 watt bulb in C.G.S. units. Q-3-The frequency of vibration of a string depends on the length L between the nodes, tension F in the string and its mass per unit length m.Guess the expression for its frequency from dimensional analysis. Q-4-Prove that A.(A B)=0 Q-5-A famous relation in physics relates moving massm to the rest massm0 of a particle in terms of its speed v and the speed of light c[this relation first arose as a consequence of a special relativity due to Albert Einstein].A boy recalls the relation almost correctly but forgets where to put the constant c .He writes: m= m0/(1-v^2)^1/2 Guess where to put the missing c. Q-6-It is claimed that two cesium clocks ,if allowed to run for hundred years, free from any disturbance, may differ by only about 0.02 sec. What does this imply for the accuracy of the standard cesium clock in measuring a time interval of 1sec. Q-7-A helicopter on flood relief mission, flying flying horizontally with a speed u at an altitude H,has to drop a food packet for a victim standing on the ground. At what distance from the victim should the packet be dropped ?The victim stands in the vertical plane of the helicopters motion. Q-8-A bullet is fired horizontally aiming at an object which starts falling at the instant the bullet is fired .Show that the bullet will hit the object. Q-9-A man can swim in still water at a speed of 3 km/hr.He wants to cross a river that flows at 2 km /hr.and reach the point directly opposite to his starting point. a)-In which direction he should try to swim. b)-How much time will he take to cross the river if the river is 500 m.wide. Q-10-A man can swim at a speed of 3km/hr in still water. He wants to cross a 500m wide river flowing at 3km/hr.He keeps himself always at an angle of 120*with the river flow while swimming. a)-Find the time he takes to cross the river. b)-At what point on the opposite bank will he arrive? Q-11-A player hits a ball at some angle. The ball goes high up in space. The player runs and catches the ball before it hits the ground.Which of the two(the player or the ball) has greater displacement? Q-12-A food packet is dropped from a plane going at an altitude of 100m. What is the path of the packet as seen from the plane? What is the path as seen from the ground? If someone asks what is the actual path, what will you answer? Q-13-A carom board [4ft*4ft] has the queen at the centre. The queen, hit by the striker moves to the front edge, rebaunds and goes in the hole behind the striking line. Find the magnitude of displacement of the queen(a)- from the centre to the front edge, (b)- from the front edge to the hole and (c)- from the centre to the hole. Q-14-A popular game in Indian villages is goli which is played with small glass balls called golis. The goli of one player is situated at a distance of 2.0m. from the goli of the second player. This second player has to project his goli by keeping the thumb of the left hand at the place of his goli, holding the goli between his two middle fingurs and making the throw, If the projected goli hits the goli of the first player, the second player wins. If the height from which the goli is projected is 19.6cm. from the ground and the goli is to be projected horizontally, with what speed should it be projected so that it directly hits the stationary goli without falling on the ground erlier? Q-15-Figure shows a 11.7ft. wide ditch with the approach roads at an angle of 15* with the horizontal,With what minimum speed should a motorbike be moving on the road so that it safely crosses the ditch ?

Assume that the length of the bike is 5ft. and it leaves the road when front part runs out of the approach road.

Q-16-A staircase contains three steps each 10cm. high and 20cm.wide(look figure). What should be the

minimum horizontal velocity of a ball rolling off the uppermost plane so as to hit directly the lowest plane? Q-17-The ceiling of a long hall is 25m. high. What is the maximum horizontal distance that a ball thrown with a speed of 40 m/o. can go without hitting the ceiling of the hall? Q-18-A cricketer can throw a ball to a maximum horizontal distance of 100m. How much high above the ground can the cricketer through the same ball? Q-19-A fighter plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 1.5km. with speed 720km/hr. passes directly overhead an anti-aircraft gun.At what angle from the vertical should the gun be fired for the shell with muzzle speed 600m/s to hit the plane? At what minmum altitude should the pilot fly to avoid being hit? Q-20-a)-Show that for a projectile the angle between the velocity and the x-axis as a function of time given by =tan^-1[Vy-gt/Vx]

b)-Show that the projection angle for a projectile launched from the origin is the given by
=tan^-1[4Hmax/R]
