WAJ 3103 1.0 DEFINITION OF CONJUNCTION, PREPOSITION AND INTERJECTION.

In grammar,

a conjunction is

a part

of

speech that

connects

two

words, phrases or clauses together. This definition may overlap with that of other parts of speech, so what constitutes a "conjunction" should be defined for each language. In general, a conjunction is an invariable grammatical particle, and it may or may not stand between the items it conjoins. The definition can also be extended to idiomatic phrases that behave as a unit with the same function as a single-word conjunction. Example of conjunction are and, but, for, neither-or and either-nor. Prepositions are words or word groups which begin a noun phrase with more than one word. Most prepositions tell where or when, or show possession. In grammar, a preposition is a part of speech that introduces a prepositional phrase. For example, in the sentence "The cat sleeps on the sofa", the word "on" is a preposition, introducing the prepositional phrase "on the sofa". In English, the most used prepositions are of, to, in, for, with and on. Simply put, a preposition indicates a relation between things mentioned in a sentence. An interjection or exclamation is isolated emotion on the part a lexical of the category used to express an

speaker. Filled

pauses such

as uh, err, um, huzzah are also considered interjections. Interjections are typically placed at the beginning of a sentence or in a sentence by themselves. The word interjection literally means thrown in between from the Latin inter (between) and fiacre (throw). Interjections are generally uninflected function words and have sometimes been seen as sentence-words, because they can replace or be replaced by a whole sentence. Sometimes, interjections combine with other words to form sentences, but not with finite verbs. When an exclamation point is not needed, a comma can take the place. Interjections are used when the speaker encounters events that cause emotions. The emotions are often strong but are not necessarily. However, several languages have interjections that cannot be related to emotions.

WAJ 3103 2.0 MY FLUFFY LITTLE BUMO.

I used to have a very special pet, back home, in my state, Kedah. She was a very cute cat. My dad gave it to me for my birthday.

Wow, what a fluffy little cat. Thank you father! I said when I saw her for the first time. I named her Bumo because she was as cute as a teddy bear of mine.

Bumo was very beautiful. She had an orange fluffy fur, a piece of brown eyes, a little gray spot on her head and a black spot on her tail. She also had small legs with very cute paws. She was three months old when my dad gave her to me.

Bumo was a very smart cat. She used to know my timing for every single day. She would wake me up in the morning, a couple of minutes before my alarm clock would sound off, by walking around my bed with her meow sound. Meowww, meowww. Bumo wake me up. She even knew what time I came home from school. I noticed this when I used to hear her clawing at the door of my house, with her paw. I remember that I used to get all happy to know that she was waiting for me. Then, when I opened the door, she would run to me with her fluffy fur if she was trying to tell me that she missed me so much. She also knew what time I went to sleep because she would be waiting for me in my bedroom and sleep in her basket. Hey Bumo, lets go playing on the playground! I always call her to play with me outside the house when I finished my homework. Bumo was a great cat. I used to love everything about her, but unfortunately, I had to leave her at my home in Kedah with my family when I luckily was selected to study at Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Keningau, Sabah. Oh no, I have to leave Bumo alone here! I said. Well done dear, you have got what you want. said my mother. Although it was a good news for me of been selected to Keningau, but I would not ever see Bumo for a long time.

WAJ 3103 Before I fly to Sabah, I sheath her with a bell necklace and snap a lot of pictures with her. It was a very sad moment for me, but my mother said not to be sad because I still can meet her when I come back home. It takes about 3 years to finish up my Bachelor of Education in Keningau, Sabah. On my graduation day, my parents come to celebrate my success. But, the day I get my degree, my father told me that Bumo had passed away a month ago for her sickness. My goodness, I will not see Bumo anymore. Even though I fell very sad that time, but I have learned to be more patience when I came to Sabah, far away from my family and Bumo. I will always glue our memory together.

WAJ 3103 3.0 SHORT STORY: PERSONAL RESPONSE THE COLOUR of SOLACE Between the three short story given by the lecturer, I choose to comment and give my personal response on the short story title The Color Of Solace by Catherine Lim. In my perspective of this short story, I consider that the plot of the story is interesting. I see a lot of question and suspense element in this story. This story tells us about a husband and wife in Singapore talking about the mourning the wife should follow if the husband is dead. This story also tells us about the customs in Singapore the widow has to obey when their husband is dead. During the funeral, the wife will be in mourning black. The mourning black also has to be wear by the wife for the time they promised with their late husband. Compared to Malaysia customs, Muslim society did not have a specific costume for the funeral. Indian widow in Malaysia wear white costume during the funeral while Chinese widow is the same as the Chinese society in Singapore. The main characters of the story are Julie as the wife and Tee Ngiam as the husband. They are husband and wife lived in Singapore. For me, Julie is a very good and loyal wife to her husband. She seems to obey all her late husband request for the funeral in her life time. Unfortunately, her husband cheated her by married another woman and gets 5 children. With the broken heart and the sadness in her, she after that violate the customary by wearing all red and released her tempered in front of the coffin. If I am going to be Julie, I am also will do the same thing to violate the customary that the wife has to wear mourning black for a life time. That is because the husband has betrayed her for her loyal and loving to him. Before the dead of the husband, Julie also is a good wife that she never grosses against her husband. This shows the kindness and loyal to her husband that can be learn by every wife out there. Tee Ngiam was a bad husband. She betrayed his loyal wife by marrying another woman and gets 5 children. He want Julie to safe his reputation as one of the very important person (VIP) in Singapore by advising Julie to obey the mourning funeral and not to marry anyone else when he die. In my opinion, he cannot treat and cheat Julie

WAJ 3103 because Julie has laid her life for him. Tee Ngiam is a selfish husband and not to being honest in his marriage. In the short story The Color of Solace by Catherine Lim, I have learned a lot for my life experience as a woman and a wife later. There is a lot of lesson in the story. First, wife need to obey her husband and to love her husband forever. Second, as a husband, they should not betray a loyal and kind hearted wife like Tee Ngiam. Third lesson in this story is to live as a kind hearted woman as it is important for the determinant of happiness in life. The suspense element is the best aspect in this story. The suspense appeared when suddenly a woman with 5 children come and visit her late husband. There was plenty of question on who is that woman, why does she suddenly appeared, who is the children and so on. There are a plenty of moral value in this story. We can learn how to love and appreciate someone like Julie did to her husband. We also can learn how to be strong like Julie when she knows that her husband has another wife. She is so strong by facing her husband wife and the children although she has heartbroken that time. There is a lot of moral value else that we can learn in this story. Lastly, this short story The Color of Solace by Catherine Lim is very interesting and full of Singaporean culture, custom and religion.
