Yale Cup Results

SaturdayPower Pool (W) Wesleyan 9-5 (W) Vermont 11-7 (L) Williams 7-10 (L) Dartmouth 7-10 Finish: T-3rd Place Yale Cup: Ups and Downs Brownian Motions performance in New Haven was disappointing at best although not without a silver lining. Despite starting the tournament with blowout victories against Vermont and Wesleyan, the scores were deceiving as Browns play was sloppy and riddled with preventable turnovers. The sloppiness continued and later in the day better competition would capitalize as Brown was handed back-to-back losses by Williams and Dartmouth to end Saturday. B-Mo started Sunday in the prequarters with a solid victory over Boston College before moving on to beat Tufts in a windy battle in which the O-line went unbroken, leading the way to a capped 8-7 victory. This marked the first day of a new offensive strategy, swapping O-line cutter Tyler Gage to the D-line for freshman cutter David Flatow, and moving Jimmy Lowe to a situational cutter. However, even this strategic innovation wasnt enough to push Brown over the top against Williams in a 11-13 loss. The upside of the tournament was the flashes of brilliance on both sides of the disc. There were streaks that the D-line seemed to get turns at will, converting forced turnovers to goals with traditional chilly Brown offensive movement. The O-line also had beautiful streaks of a brilliant flowing offense, seemingly unstoppable no matter what the defense. However, in order to win Regionals and go deep into Nationals, Brown is going to need consistency from both lines, as well as the recuperation of its injured players, especially D-line handlers Noel Fetting-Smith (shin), Mike Dmytrenko (knee), and Greg Olson (hand). B-Mo and P-Funk Headed to Regionals

While Brown students partied on campus during Spring Weekend, Brown A, B (P-Funk), and C (Mothership Connection) took care of business at the South New England Open Sectionals. Brown A came into the weekend with three players injured and left with five (Greg Olson broke the thumb on his off hand and is waiting to hear if there is ligament damage), but was still able to win all its games convincingly. Though run-through and layout Ds, skies, and scores were plentiful, the most encouraging stat was turnovers. Each game B-Mo took better care of the disk, exemplified by the O-line being broken only twice the entire tournament. Sunday Brown A was able to continue its annual dominance in the section by beating Wesleyan, a team that had beaten both Dartmouth and Williams at Yale Cup, 15-6. Brown B had a strong showing Saturday with convincing wins over Bryant and Yale B, but fell to WPI in a close game 13-10. On Sunday P-Funk was determined to show the section that they were a Regionals caliber team but had a tough road, needing to win three of four games. In game one, captain Alec Pinkham ended Connecticut Colleges season with a Jeff Ericson led B-Mo on gorgeous up-wind flick huck to a wide open both sides of the disc Alex Franks for a break and the victory. Next round P-Funk completed Browns program sweep of UConn who had just limped in from a semifinal beating by the A team. After the team fell to a talented URI team, Craig Hutchinsons voice was heard clear, we are GOING to win our next game! With the season on the line, everything came together for P-Funk as even Amos Lichtmans flu was not able to keep him from controlling the end zones while Dan Scheinerman tallied D after D. In the end P-Funk had avenged the previous days loss and crushed WPI 15-4, sending them to their first New England Regional since 2005. Brown C also had a strong showing this weekend against some stiff competition, including a hard earned victory against Bryant B. The Franz Fund Update The Mike Franz Memorial Fund is steadily moving towards its goal of $150,000. Once complete, the Franz Fund will work to financially supplement Brown Mens Ultimate. The spinoff the team receives each year from this endowment will help pay for travel budgets, field time, and many of the expenses that players have been required to handle on their own, helping ensure that players are not limited from enjoying the pride and tradition of Brownian Motion due to financial limitations. With your help the Franz Fund can achieve its goal by summer and be a complete success.
