The apparatus above was used in an activity to determine the solubility of substances in non-aqueous solutions. The following steps were carried out: Step 1 : Five clean test tubes were placed in a rack. Step 2 : Each test tube was filled with 5 cm3 of turpentine, ether, acetone, alcohol and kerosene respectively. Step 3 : A glass rod with a little grease on one end was placed in each test tube. The glass rod was observed to determine if the grease dissolved in the solvent or not. Step 4 : Steps 1-3 were repeated with glass rods with lipstick and iodine. Step 5 : All observations were recorded in a table. (a) Name the variable that (i) is kept constant (ii) is manipulated (iii) responds (b) What is a non-aqueous solution?
