TANTRA

(THE DESIGN COMPETITION)

Please read the Instructions given below: Six design statements are given below. You can choose any one of the six problems. You can suggest a solution to the problems through your design. The draft proposal of the should not exceed FIVE pages. Send the draft proposal in form of soft copy to istesc@mgit.ac.in and a hard copy to the college address. The last date for submitting the draft proposal is 30.08.2011 Intimation of selected proposals is 03.09.2011 The candidates of the selected proposals have to make a presentation at MGIT during 15th and 16th September 2011. Best three designs will be given prizes. The prizes will be based on the design and presentation. I. WATER CONSERVATION & MANAGEMENT: With growing demand for water, how can we address the water related problems of our country over a period of time in a sustainable fashion? Come out with a new feasible technical idea/innovation which will serve the problems of water in the coming years, for both rural and urban areas. We need an efficient and optimal use of the current water resources that we have. You also have to come up with a basic financial model that will show its financial viability. You must optimize design and construction value while reducing operating costs. You need high-availability treatment capability. Your systems have multifaceted needs i.e. drinking, household, irrigation etc. Your distribution system must be operational 24/7 for both rural and urban areas. While doing this take care of the following factors: Continuity of service and transparency toward public authorities (operation). Minimal operation and maintenance costs to maintain margins. Growing need for high technology and advanced processes.

Balance responsibility transfer and project profitability (design and build). II. GRID ELECTRICTY: Choose a region or place of your choice and suggest innovative means to meet the energy demands of the rural sectors which are not connected to grid electricity in that region. The solution suggested must be self sustainable and should take into consideration the following points: It should take advantage of the various topological features and availability of natural resources in that region. It should also emphasize on improving the standard of living and generating livelihood and opportunities for the people of the region. It should be economically viable and should have a low set-up cost so that it could be easily implemented in the rural areas without much aid from the government.
III. e-WASTE:

Think of an innovative technique which can solve the problem of e-Waste (Electronic Waste) in India. The solution must be efficient as well as sustainable for a long period of time. The technique developed must take care of the following points: It should be as less hazardous as possible for the environment as well as for the community. It should emphasize on the reuse of the useful materials present in the e-Waste and recycling of the other materials so that useful substances can be synthesized from them. It should take care of the various varieties of e-Waste. It should be economically viable and the setup cost for the technology should be feasible such that it can be implemented at more locations. IV. SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT: Our aim is to develop transportation systems that maintain or improve human and ecosystem well being together - not one at the expense of the other. Due to varying environmental, social and economic conditions between and within countries, there is no single best way to achieve sustainable transportation systems. A set of guiding principles can be described, however, upon which transition strategies should be built. The challenge now is to

Find

ways of meeting our transportation needs that are environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically viable. How to make the citys transport sustainable by introducing car pooling, buses and using cycles within the campus etc? Propose a list of strategic directions for moving towards sustainability in transportation. Consider the potential economic and employment benefits that could be derived from the restructuring of our transportation systems. It should cater to the needs of all the sections of the society.

V. CAD CONTEST: Design a four floor building (including basement and ground level) in a plot of 30mx30m as shown. Assume the basement for parking, one floor for shopping malls, and at least one for residential purpose (if one choose one floor for residential, and then the other has to be for office purpose). Outside it should serve for advertisement purpose. You are free to choose any location (any city or town).

It should satisfy the following conditions: 1. Your local climate (Climate conscious) 2. Include Green building aspects 3. Sustainable Requirements: 1. Aesthetics 2. Functional aspects of the design 3. Families, 4. Climatic conditions for your chosen location. 5. Choice of Building materials, 6. Technical calculations for example air changes, lighting etc. 7. Cost calculations

VI. VILLAGE PLANNING: Design a sustainable village that meets the following goals by following the basic principles:

The goals of design of the Model Sustainable Village are: 1. to promote economic growth 2. to protect the environment Follow the principles below when you design the village: Basic Principle 1: The Village is a Natural System Basic Principle 2: Maximize the use of the villages natural resources Basic Principle 3: Protect all natural living systems Basic Principle 4: Eliminate Waste
