school, costs are
rising across the
board. Though tuition hikes
get most of the publicity, addi-
tional expenses associ-
ated with school can
add up as well, and
school supplies are no
exception.
Though it was
once easy to send kids
off to school with a
pencil case, a couple of
notebooks and a few
other accessories,
todays students live in
a digital world, and
their teachers often
rely on technology to supple-
ment lesson plans. As a result,
the cost of school supplies is
higher than ever before, and
parents are left looking for
ways to give kids the tools they
need without breaking the
bank. To do just that, consider
the following tips.

T
iger Woods has fallen
from the top of the
leaders bulletins, the
player money list, the TV talk
shows; hes lost his best en-
dorsements, the magazine
covers, he is no longer the
talk of greatness and the man
to beat on the golf course. He
has fallen from Grace, ruined
his marriage to a wonderful
mother and a beautiful
woman, from what the public
saw as perfection at his pro-
fession and from his stoic and
focused demeanor in front of
the camera. I think his fail-
ures and performance on the
fairways of late, has generated
as much interest and public
comment, as his successes and
triumphs gained for him just
a few short years ago. Tiger
Woods has proven a lot of
things in his career, the most
of which is that he is a human
being,handicapped by the
frailties, desires, weaknesses
and emotions that go with it.
He proved not to be unbeat-
able; however, he elevated
the other players to his level
of play, like Roger Bannisters
breaking the 4 minute mile
for the first time in human
history in 1954. It took hun-
dreds of years for a man to run
that fast, where today, hun-
dreds of athletes can do it. It
took one man to prove that it
could be done and then oth-
ers quickly reached and sur-
passed Mr. Bannisters time.
The same will be said of Tiger
Woods accomplishments on
the course and I believe it will
be Tiger himself, in time,
making those comeback
statements while wearing the
Green Jacket once again at
the Masters. But, until his re-
turn to greatness and back to
the top of his game, the
sportscasters will continue to
chastise and mock him, the
fans will continue to revel in
his slump and the other play-
ers will have a chance to say
they beat the Great Tiger
Woods.
Though the public and
the reporters might count
him down and out, the play-
ers and his true fans under-
stand his talent and what a
threat he can be. When he
regains his focus, concentra-
tion and technique, he will
attack the game like he never
did before and I predict he
will be a better player, sur-
passing his best scores, com-
ing back with feats of
amazement everywhere on
the grass, sand and circum-
venting water hazards. He is
a young man who found too
much success, too quickly and
at too young an age. He has
the most recognizable face in
the world, not just the sports
world and the pressure to per-
form and constantly be in the
public eye proved too much

n addition to having an
unstable knee, living with
an ACL
tear can cause
so much more
damage to
other structures
of the knee.
An ACL is
critically im-
portant to the
stability of the
knee joint.
While certain patients may
tolerate living with a PCL
tear with reasonably good
outcomes, most patients do
poorly with an ACL deficient
knee.
The typical history is an
athlete who comes to a sud-
den stop and turns. Typically,
females are at increased risk
than males. A pop may be
felt, and there may be a sig-
nificant amount of associated
pain deep in the knee joint.
Within the next 12 to 24
hours, the knee may swell. A
visit to the emergency depart-
ment and initial radiographs
may not show any problems.
Many patients at this point
may dismiss it as a bad
sprain and not seek further
evaluation and treatment.
The issue is that radiographs
are useful mostly to show
bone structures, and will not
pick up further internal
pathology such as ligament
tears and meniscus tears.
Over the following
weeks, the swelling often set-
tles down and the patient
may feel pretty good. It
may only be with cutting and
pivoting activities that the
person many feel any instabil-
ity. The typical story that we
hear is that they gave up cer-
tain sports because they
couldnt trust their knee after
a bad sprain. Their biggest
concern is that their knee
feels loose when going
down a set of stairs. In many
cases, this may just be the
honeymoon phase as their
ACL deficient knee further
deteriorates.
As a central ligament in
the knee, the ACL plays a key
role in stabilizing the knee in
translational (front to back)
and rotational stress. When-
ever coming to a stop or
changing directions, the
femur (thigh bone) naturally
glides 7 to 8 mm relative to
the tibia (leg bone). The
ACL acts as a stop for the leg
from gliding further. Without
an ACL, there is little to pre-
vent the joint from shifting
further. Herein arguably lies
the biggest problem in a knee
without an ACL: the extra
shifting and gliding puts a
tremendous amount of stress
on the other structures in the
knee. The cartilage surface
gets a characteristic pattern of
wear and tear, leading to pre-
mature arthritis. The insta-
bility may lead to a tear of the
medial and/or lateral menis-
cus, thereby damaging an im-
portant shock absorber in the
knee. Fragments of cartilage
may slough off, turning into
loose bodies, which can cause
serious havoc in the knee.
The question often gets
asked by mothers of teenagers
and 42 years old weekend
warriors alike: which patients
should have their ACLs re-
constructed through surgery.
The textbook answer for
decades has been those with
functional instability. How-
ever, as we learn more and
more about the importance of
the ACL, the trend clearly
has been to intervene sooner,
in order to avoid damage to
the other structures in the
knee.

Big Box Stores can not match our Uncompromised Quality, Professionalism or Value!!!
NJ Lic. #13VH00780500
C
lothing styles change
on a whim according
to what trend fore-
casters see as the it items of
the season. People looking to
keep abreast of certain styles or
just maintain a fresh supply of
different wardrobe options may
find that replenishing a closet
can be an expensive venture.
But it doesnt have to be.
Those without a set
budget may be able to afford
monthly shopping trips to add
new pieces to a wardrobe.
However, the average person
lives on a tighter budget, and
there may not be as much
room for discretionary spend-
ing on clothing and acces-
sories. According to
VisualEconomics.com, a fam-
ily of three making about
$64,000 per year can expect to
spend roughly 4 percent of
those earnings on apparel and
services.
People interested in re-
freshing their selection of
clothing more frequently
should consider alternative
options than buying retail.
Here are some ideas to think
about.
Clothing Swap
A good way to socialize
and switch-up a wardrobe is to
host a clothing swap party. In-
vite around 10 friends or fam-
ily members to be part of it. Be
sure to have at least 2 or 3 of
the same-sized people so that
there wont be an abundance
of items to fit one person and
not enough to fit another.
Shoes and accessories are also
acceptable.
Set the rules for the
event, where each person is
entitled to take as many items
as she has brought. Encourage
guests to bring clean, gently
used items that are in good
quality. Because this type of
get-together involves some ad-
vanced work of sorting
through clothing, be sure to
give guests ample advance no-
tice.
Have refreshments on
hand and opportunities to
chat over styles and options.
Whatever clothes are not
taken by others can be do-
nated to charity.
Consignment Stores
It used to be that con-
signment stores were the
stepchildren of the retail
world. Many people viewed
them as glorified tag sales and
didnt think they were worthy
of investigation.
Nowadays, consignment
shops are big business and
good places for savvy shoppers
to visit. Much like overstock
stores sell items on discount
that are on par with depart-
ment stores, consignment
shops often offer new or very
lightly used items for resale
at a fraction of the original re-
tail price. Plus, theyre an ideal
place to look for unique pieces
and accessories that might
otherwise have been out of
budget.
Shop Basics
When buying new items
at a store, buy pieces that can
be put together in a variety of
combinations. Stick to similar
colors and themes so that each
piece will work seamlessly.
Consider multi-layered items
that can be worn with a cardi-
gan or without; or go from the
office to a dinner date after-
ward. Remember, items that
blend can be worn more often
because they wont stick out in
the minds of others as some-
thing flashy.
Consider Shopping Online
Shoppers are often
amazed at the wide variety of
items that can be purchased
online. If a shopper doesnt see
something in a store for the
price she wants, she can com-
parison shop online. Although
she cant try on merchandise,
with the exception of some
sites that offer a virtual model,
many online retailers offer free
shipping on returns.
Revitalize your wardrobe on a budget
Consignment stores and clothing swaps are two ideas for
refreshing a wardrobe without spending a fortune.

The People of Peace Ministry
at St. Marys Parish in Pompton
Lakes will recognize Interna-
tional Day of Peace on Wednes-
day, September 21, with an
interfaith celebration at 7:30
pm at St. Marys Carnevale
Center, 10 Lenox Avenue. The
International Day of Peace is
one designed by the UN to pro-
vide opportunities for individu-
als, organizations, and nations
to create practical acts of peace
on a shared date. The UN will
observe the date by rededicating
itself to world peace and encour-
ages all people to work toward
this goal. Those taking part in
the celebration at St. Marys will
include faith leaders from the
local Jewish, Muslim, Protestant
and Catholic communities.
They will each speak briefly and
offer prayers and music for
peace. The first International
Day of Peace was held in 1982
to coincide with the opening of
the UN General Assembly as a
day of global ceasefire and non-
violence. The observation has
grown to include millions of
people worldwide and many
events are organized each year
to commemorate and celebrate
this day. This is the fourth year
the People of Peace Ministry at
St. Marys has observed the
event. The public is invited to
attend. Refreshments will be

D
ear Doc:
Ive had enough of
this pain in the neck
(and its not my husband)! De-
spite drugs and lots of therapy, my
shoulder and neck pain has been
progressively worsening for years.
What can I do?
Had Enough
Dear Had Enough:
Next to spouses and inlaws,
faulty spinal mechanics is the
primary cause of most neck
pain. Functional problems of
the spine can usually be traced
to incorrect spinal alignment
due to abnormal posture and
previous trauma. Closely associ-
ated with abnormal posture are
other causes of neck pain such
as repetitive strain, muscular
weakness, and degenerative
changes of the discs and joints
of the spine.
To find the right solution
for your particular problem, you
need to be accurately assessed.
Chiropractic physicians are spe-
cialists in the assessment and
treatment of muscle and joint
problems, including neck and
neck-related pain. From a thor-
ough assessment, your chiro-
practor can determine the most
effective and appropriate course
of care. For example, Sandra
consulted her chiropractor for
help with neck pain that for
years had been getting worse.
She had tried various therapies,
exercise programs and medica-
tion to find relief, to no avail.
When the chiropractor exam-
ined Sandra it was apparent she
had serious malalignment of the
vertebrae in the lower part of
her neck. Infact, x-rays showed
a complete reversal of the nor-
mal cervical curve. Her chiro-
practor explained how her neck
pain was a direct result of this
abnormal spinal position, which
was causing muscle weakness,
disc compression, nerve irrita-
tion and gradual deterioration
of her spine.
Now that Sandra under-
stood why medication, work-
ing out and various therapies
were not the answer, she chose
to work hard to correct the real
problem: alignment of her neck.
Her treatment involved spe-
cific, gentle chiropractic adjust-
ments and other procedures to
improve joint mobility and re-
store normal spinal curves and
alignment.The result? After
several months of dedicated
work Sandras x-rays demon-
strated near-normal spinal posi-
tion. Her spine was now able to
move and work better, finally
dispelling her chronic neck
pain. The impact this had on
her life was enormous. Not only
was she happy again and able to
do the things she loved, Sandra
realized with a healthier spine
she had been given a new lease
on life!

atthew graduated with honors from New York
University in 1997 and began a satisfying career in
orthopedics specializing in spine rehabilitation. Ever
keen to learn and do more for his patients Matthew began
studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic Manual
Therapy. This training exposed him to the concept of
Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referred
to as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placed
not on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-
a thought and decision making process, involving analytical
examination and assessment on which treatment decisions are
based.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-
renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, further
expanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and
nerve injury treatments. Not to be missed, Matthew also
trained in the McKenzie Diagnosis and treatment of the spine.
Matthew believes the combination of this training and
education in the Australian, New Zealand and American
treatment strategies have allowed him to provide broader
range of treatment options thereby helping more patients.
Matthew has been a Director of Physical Therapy for 8

D
ogs have a unique
way of introduction
to other dogs...they
sniff each others backsides.
They do this because each dog
has a unique scent that is
produced by their anal glands
or anal sacs. While many peo-
ple arent even aware that
these glands exist, they play
an important role in a dogs
behavior. They use this scent
to identify one another, as a
form of communication, and
when they were in the wild, as
a way to mark their territory
or scare off an enemy.
Anal glands are located
just beneath the skin on either
side of the anus. The glands
produce a foul and often fishy
smelling liquid. Whenever
your pet defecates, a small
amount of this liquid is ex-
creted, contributing to your
dogs personal fragrance. Most
people never even know that
these glands exist because in
most pets they dont cause any
problems. Although anal
glands can fail to empty
sufficiently and cause a
number of issues for your
pet.
The most common
problem with anal glands
occurs when the liquid
produced by the gland
becomes thickened; they
are unable to be ex-
pressed and cannot be
emptied. This results in
impaction which is ex-
tremely uncomfortable
for your pet. Typical signs
of anal gland impaction
include scooting (drag-
ging their rear ends along
the ground) or licking/biting at
their rear end. Sometimes
stools may become loose or
even a drop of blood can be
seen in them. The good news
is anal gland impaction can
usually be cleared up quickly
by your veterinarian. Your vet-
erinarian will manually express
or empty the anal glands. This
can be a onetime trip to the
vets office but for many dogs
anal gland impaction is an on-
going problem.
There are a variety of rea-
sons why a pet might have
trouble expressing its anal
glands. Sometimes it depends
on the thickness of the secre-
tion itself which may be too
thick to express easily. Also,
the consistency or bulkiness of
an animals stools can affect
anal gland function. Stools
which are too small or too soft
might not push on the glands
enough to cause expression.
That is why its important to
make sure your pet eats a
high quality diet which is
high enough in fiber to en-
sure large solid stools. A nat-
ural way to bulk the feces is
to add a small amount of
canned pumpkin to the diet.
An unfortunate sequel to
anal gland impaction is in-
fection and abscess of the
anal gland. If an impacted
anal gland is left untreated
and not expressed, abscesses
can develop fairly quickly. In
this case, your pet will expe-
rience moderate to severe
pain versus just discomfort.
The scooting or licking the
anal area becomes more fre-
quent and dogs will often
growl or try to bite when one
tries to touch them anywhere
in that general area. Anal
gland abscesses usually require
more invasive treatment like
lancing and draining the ab-
scess plus antibiotics. It is
therefore important to bring
your pet to your veterinarian as
soon as you notice any signs
that might indicate an anal
gland problem.
You are lucky if your pet
has never had an anal gland
problem. Now that you know
they exist, it is important to
watch for any signs of anal
gland problems in your pet and
to act promptly if they do.

Shoppers simply visit the Web
site of their favorite online re-
tailers and sign up to be noti-
fied of any deals or sales.
Coordinate with teachers
ahead of time. Parents should
consult their childs teacher
before school begins and
throughout the year to deter-
mine if there are any special
projects or reports coming up
that require certain supplies.
For instance, kids might need
costly graphing calculators
next semester. If parents are
given advance notice, they can
shop around to get the best
deal. Talk to local school offi-
cials to see if its possible to
make a list of school supplies
available at the end of the year
instead of at the very begin-
ning. If so, this gives parents
several months to shop around
for the best deals.
Do your own homework. Par-
ents of college-bound kids
might think an e-reader would
make the ideal gift, saving kids
the trouble of lugging all those
books around campus. How-
ever, parents should do their
homework before making any
such purchases. Thats because
not all textbooks are available
as e-books, and kids might end
up having to buy hard copies of
their textbooks anyway. Before
kids head off to college, exam-
ine their first semester sched-
ule and then look online for
each class corresponding syl-
labus. If most of their required
textbooks are available as e-
books, then an e-reader might
make a great gift. If not, think
of something else.
Dont make the bottom line
the determining factor.
Whether a student is in grade
school, high school or college,
his or her school supplies tend
to undergo more than their fair
share of wear and tear. So par-
ents looking to save on school
supplies should consider that
when shopping. Though the
less expensive backpack might
seem more affordable, make
sure it can withstand the test of
time and all the wear and tear
that comes with being a stu-
dents backpack. If not, it will
likely need to be replaced be-
fore the school year is out,
which can end up costing more
money in the long run.
Recycle school supplies.
School supplies can be recy-
cled. At the end of each semes-
ter or school year, perform an
inventory of existing school
supplies. If last semesters note-
books were hardly used, theres
no need to buy new ones for
the new semester. Similarly,
parents who have a couple of
students in their household
can embrace hand-me-down
school supplies just like they
do with clothes. If one child
finishes the school year, but
didnt quite use up all of their
supplies, save those supplies for
the day when their younger
siblings end up in the same
class.

id you ever notice the
little boy on the soccer
field who just could not
quite kick the ball, tripped over
people and had poor coordina-
tion when trying to dribble? Or
the little girl in ballet class who
had a difficult time imitating the
teachers body movements and
sequencing the dance steps?
What about the first grader on
the playground who constantly
barged into other children and
just didnt seem to see obstacles
in front of him causing him to
trip and fall constantly? Most
people refer to these children as
clumsy, but there may be a bet-
ter explanation.
For the last 100 years poor
motor coordination or clumsi-
ness has been recognized as a
problem. Recently, the term De-
velopmental Coordination Dis-
order (DCD) has been used
when referring to children with
motor coordination difficulties.
This is a fairly common child-
hood disorder and is usually
identified in school age children
between the ages of 6-12. Stud-
ies indicate that the prevalence
of DCD is estimated at 8-12% of
all school- aged children with
more boys diagnosed than girls
(2:1). As a result of the wide di-
versity in the DCD diagnosis,
finding its true cause has been
difficult and is unknown at this
time. Some speculate that DCD
can be caused by an injury that
occurs before or during the
birthing process. Others say that
DCD is a result of damage on the
cellular level.
In order for a child to be
diagnosed with DCD it must
impact on some aspect of his or
her life. These children often
exhibit poor balance, tripping
on uneven surfaces, an awk-
ward running pattern, dropping
items, frequent tripping and
falling, difficulty imitating body
positions and following 2-3 step
motor directions. These motor
problems will affect the childs
ability to complete motor ori-
ented tasks. Because of these
problems, children often per-
form poorly in sports demon-
strating slow reaction and
movement times. Since these
children do not feel successful
when participating in sports,
they may feel insecure. This in-
security can lead to a more
sedentary lifestyle for the child
thus causing poor muscular
strength, decreased muscle
force and ultimately weight
gain. Unfortunately, children
with DCD may experience
other difficulties, besides the
physical limitations. These
children may exhibit psychoso-
cial problems. Because these
children may not excel in one
area, they may seek less socially
desirable types of attention.
They may be the class clown or
act out more often than the
other children. Adolescents
with DCD have been found to
have fewer friends, lower self es-
teem and more anxiety than
their peers without DCD.
Historically parents have
been told not to worry about
their childs clumsiness. The
child will outgrow the problem.
However, current research
states that children do not out-
grow clumsiness and without
intervention, will not improve.
Motor control processes
are complex and depend on in-
tegrating the sensory, percep-
tual, cognitive and motor
systems. A skilled Pediatric
Physical Therapist can work on
integrating all of these systems
to assist the child in working
toward age appropriate func-
tional goals. By breaking down
components of a task, practic-
ing each component repeti-
tively and translating the new
skill into the childs natural en-
vironment, motor skills can be
greatly improved, confidence
and self assuredness enhanced
and enthusiasm and participa-
tion in sports and age appropri-
ate games greatly increased. I
have worked with hundreds of
children with symptoms that
fall into this category with ex-
cellent and permanent results
that both parents and children
are greatly pleased with.

Why does my child seem so
uncoordinated/awkward? By Gena Livingston
T
odays kids are busier
than ever before. Be it
the increasingly com-
petitive nature of scholastic life
or the increase of two-income
households where kids need
something to do other than
come directly home after
school, children today are
much busier than their school-
aged counterparts of yesteryear.
While it can be fun and
beneficial for kids to partici-
pate in extracurricular activi-
ties, finding the right fit isnt
as easy as it sounds. When
helping kids find an extracur-
ricular activity, its best to
consider a host of factors. Es-
pecially keep in mind that not
all kids are the same with re-
spect to interests. And what
was enjoyed by their parents
wont necessarily be enjoyed
by them.
Getting Started
The best place to start is
to speak to kids about their in-
terests. Just because Dad loved
playing football doesnt mean
Junior is destined to be a grid-
iron great. Kids have their
own interests, and those inter-
ests can be cultivated with the
right extracurricular activity.
For example, a creative child
might enjoy an after-school
art class a couple of times per
week. Parents should also con-
sider extracurricular that can
help kids grow as people. For
instance, a child whos shy in
public but loves hamming it
up at home might embrace an
after-school theater program.
Once options have been dis-
cussed with kids, take in a ses-
sion or two before committing
to anything. The shy young-
ster might visit the local the-
ater program and enjoy it
thoroughly, or he or she might
decide against it. Either way, a
visit will give kids and parents
a sense of what the program is
like and whether or not its
the right fit. When visiting,
observe the nature of the pro-
gram. Is it an encouraging, vi-
brant environment? Do the
adults and kids involved ap-
pear to be having fun?

Parents want their kids to
be as safe after school as they
are during it. When looking
for an extracurricular activity,
inquire about the staff-to-
child ratio and about the
staff s professional back-
ground. Any staff-to-child
ratio that is greater than 12:1
likely indicates a program that
is understaffed, which mean

continued on next page
kids could wont get the atten-
tion they need. Also, ask for
the staff s references and work
history in the field of child
care. If certification is neces-
sary or recommended, make
sure the staff meets all require-
ments.
Parents should also in-
quire about program costs.
Though many programs are
upfront about fees, some have
hidden fees that can add up.
Such fees can be for uniforms,
equipment, class trips, etc.
Extra fees dont have to ex-
clude a program from consid-
eration, but its better to know
about them in advance than
have them come as a surprise.
Consider a Childs Grade
Level
A childs age and grade
level should also be consid-
ered when choosing an ex-
tracurricular activity. Consult
teachers about finding an age-
appropriate extracurricular ac-
tivity. For example, less
competitive activities that
emphasize fun might be more
appropriate for kids in kinder-
garten and the first grade. For
second graders, activities not
offered at school, like learning
to play an instrument, can
help cultivate a childs inter-
est in a noncompetitive envi-
ronment. As kids reach third
grade and beyond, consider
more rules-based activities, in-
cluding team sports, as kids at
that age are more capable of
understanding rules and han-
dling losing than younger
kids. As children get older and
move on to middle school,
look for activities that rein-
force learning and help
develop a young persons char-
acter, including their ability to
interact with others.
When looking for an ex-
tracurricular activity for kids,
parents should consider a host
of factors, including the childs
interests and age.

H
omeowners who have
had prior issues with
mold know just how
pesky a mold problem can be.
When mold spores land on
surfaces that are wet, mold
may begin to grow indoors.
And the growth
of mold takes just
a matter of hours.
According to the
National Associa-
tion of Home
Builders, all it
takes is 48 hours
for a moist envi-
ronment com-
bined with room
temperature to
produce mold
growth.
When mold
does begin to
grow, homeowners will notice
a less-than-welcoming aroma
often characterized as musty.
In addition, mold growth,
which is most common in
areas of the home like the
kitchen, bathroom and base-
ment where humidity and
moisture levels are higher, can
be unsightly and unhealthy. In
2004, the Institute of Medi-
cine linked indoor exposure to
mold with upper respiratory
tract symptoms, cough and
wheeze in people who, prior to
exposure, were healthy. The
IOM also found exposure to
mold can exacerbate asthma
conditions for people who al-
ready have asthma and even
linked respiratory illness in
otherwise healthy children to
exposure to mold.
What such research high-
lights is the emphasis home-
owners must place on remov-
ing mold from their homes.
While mold is a natural part of
the environment that is impos-
sible to eliminate entirely,

Make indoor mold growth a distant memory
continued on page 20
homeowners can take steps to
stop mold growth in their
homes and protect themselves
and their families along the
way. When addressing a mold
problem, keep in mind the po-
tentially negative impact mold
can have on your health and
dress accordingly. Wear long
sleeves, gloves, protective gog-
gles, and even a mask or respi-
rator that covers the nose and
mouth to reduce your risk of
developing a respiratory ill-
ness.
Fix leaky pipes and addi-
tional water problems. Mold
growth can cause cosmetic
damage that can never be re-
paired. But fixing leaky pipes
and addressing other water
problems, including leaky win-
dows, is a good way to stop fu-
ture mold growth and prevent
further cosmetic damage to the
home.
Scrub and dry moldy surfaces.
When addressing moldy sur-
faces, scrub them hard with de-
tergent and water, once
finished, dry the surfaces thor-
oughly. Going forward, rou-
tinely clean areas of the home
that have had mold growth in
the past.
Discard certain materials that
fall victim to mold. Porous or
absorbent surfaces will likely
need to be discarded once they
have been victimized by mold
growth. Ceiling tiles and car-
pets, for example, are espe-
cially difficult to rid of mold
once its settled in because the
mold finds cracks and crevices
in which it essentially hides
from cleaning. In such cases,
its best to simply discard the
items and have them replaced.
Do not mask the mold prob-
lem. Painting or caulking over
mold wont work. When ap-
plied to moldy surfaces, paint
typically cracks. Instead of
wasting paint and time, scrub
and dry the surfaces, making
sure the entire mold is gone,
and then paint or caulk.
Leave big jobs to the pros.
Smaller mold growths can be
addressed by the average
homeowner. However, when
mold grow-th is especially
large or mold has grown on
valuable items, including heir-
looms, its best to hire a profes-
sional. When doing so, try to
find one a friend or neighbor
can recommend, as not all
mold-removal specialists are
created equal. If its hard to
find a recommendation, look
for a specialist who is affiliated
with a professional organiza-
tion. Such organizations typi-
cally insist their members have
a certain level of experience
and training before they can
become members.

here are many differ-
ent styles of eye
frames these days to
choose from but the real pop-
ularity is in no-glare lenses,
according to Bob Figueras,
manager of Hillcrest Opti-
cians on Route 23 in Butler.
There are many benefits
with no-glare lenses including
safer and more comfortable
vision while driving at night,
fewer reflections for a more
attractive look, and reduced
eye fatigue and headaches
caused by extensive screen
viewing, adds Figueras.
At Hillcrest Opticians,
says Figueras, we carry Crizal
No-Glare Lenses and they
have been getting rave re-
views from our customers.
The biggest advantage,
he notes, is that these no-
glare lenses help reduce glare
from headlights, taillights,
and street lights in nighttime
driving.
The Crizal no-glare
lenses are free of dirt or
smudges, have no scratches,
and basically provide the
clearest vision possible, ac-
cording to our customers.
Hillcrest Opticians are
located at 1426 Route 23
northbound in Butler adja-
cent to the Ophthalmology
office of Eric Shnayder, MD.
Hillcrest Opticians carries
name-brands such as Gucci,
Elle, Nine West, Liz Clai-
borne, Ellen Tract, Cole
Haan, Norma Kamali and
others.
for him, for the moment.
After all of this he fired his
caddy, Steve Williams, (rea-
sons unknown) who found
immediate success working
with the Australian Adam
Scott. Tiger is only 35 years
old, a young man in an old
game with plenty of time for
a comeback. He has a new
coach and caddy and will
begin again despite the nega-
tive noise from the gallery
and press box.
So too, will the stock
market recover, despite the
many prognosticators predic-
tions of gloom and doom.
The economy willrecover, un-
employment will ease, banks
will lend again, the housing
market will once again gain
traction and prices will rise,
interest rates will increase on
savings vehicles, gold and sil-
ver prices willfall, 401k and
IRA values will once again
increase in value, consumer
confidence will rise and with
increased spending not far be-
hind. This is why they call
the markets cyclical. It has
always happened this way and
always will happen this way.
The big questions are: Will
you be ready for it? Will you
be positioned for it? Will you
take advantage of the de-
pressed prices of today to
profit tomorrow? Will you
take action? A question you
never want to ask yourself is:
Will you miss the boat?
Think about this for a
moment. If you are at least 40
years old, economic malaise,
such as we are currently expe-
riencing, has happened in
1973, 1987, 1990, 1994,
2000, 2001, 2002, 2008 and
fortunes were made in the
years immediately following
by average and ordinary
working folks like us. Based
on historical facts that you
can chart and judge for your-
self and without picking indi-
vidual winning stocks, you
can benefit from the cyclical
events of the stock, bond and
housing markets, just like the
tycoons do. In most cases, a
minimum investment to get
started can be as low as a few
thousand dollars, maybe even
less. My message for this par-
ticular column is to put a lit-
tle Tiger in your tank. Its
time to get back in the game
and be an investor again.
Maybe you need a new coach
or caddy also with new win-
ning ideas, strategies and
techniques to mitigate risk
that can ensure success.
Maybe even with a few guar-
antees* thrown-in that in-
sures your retirement income.
Would you like these features
for your invested dollars and
retirement portfolio? If so,
please consider me for the
coaching and caddying posi-
tions. Id like to help. Refer-
ences cheerfully furnished
upon request! Call me today!

No-Glare Lenses increase in

Hillcrest Opticians
C
reating simple, deli-
cious meals does not
have to be difficult.
With the right ingredients on
hand and a little know-how,
you can create tasty meals
right from your own kitchen.
Italian dishes full of flavorful,
fresh, tomato bases are some of
the most popular around. Just
think of the multitude of pasta
options or meat, seafood and
vegetable a la parmigiana
dishes.
Tomatoes: A staple of Italian
cooking
Tomatoes are the heart of
many popular Italian-style or
Mediterranean meals. Not
every home chef has the time
or the space to grow their own
tomatoes. Even still, certain
varieties taste better than oth-
ers. Pre-packaged tomatoes are
a handy option for home
cooks. When shopping, select
high-quality, fresh-tasting, gar-
den-ripe tomatoes, like those
from Pomi.
Not all tomatoes are cre-
ated equal. Those from Pomi
are specially grown in Italy and
processed right next to the
fields where they were har-
vested. These 100-percent nat-
ural tomatoes yield some of the
freshest flavor for cooking.
Studies indicate that cooked
tomatoes are an important
component in immune system
health. Tomatoes are high in
lycopene an antioxidant
that gives tomatoes their
bright color and can fend off
certain cancers.
You also want to look for
tomatoes that are safely pack-
aged, without the use of BPA
(bisphenol A), a carcinogenic
chemical that is often used in
plastics and in resin linings of
metal cans. Pomi stay-fresh
packaging is always BPA-free
and is specially designed to en-
sure a long shelf life. These
tomatoes are always available.
So, just Pomi when the urge to
create delicious food strikes
you.
Secret of the professionals
The popularity of cable how-to
cooking channels has enabled
home cooks to learn some in-
sider secrets from some of the
worlds most renowned chefs.
For decades, Mario Batali
has wowed diners with his culi-
nary flair at several successful
restaurants, including Del
Posto and showed his expert-
ise on many long-running tele-
vision cooking shows. He has
also authored several best-sell-
ing cookbooks. In his 2010 re-
lease Molto Gusto, Batali
an expert on authentic Italian
cuisine routinely recom-
mends the use of Pomi toma-
toes for his collection of pizza,
pasta and antipasti recipes.
Inspired menu
creation
Chefs looking to get started on
their next mouthwatering culi-
nary creation can consider this
recipe for Chicken Breast Sor-
rento, courtesy of Pomi.
Chicken Breast Sorrento
2 whole chicken breasts,
skinned
1 cup water
11/2 cups Pomi, strained
1 small onion
1 small carrot
3 tablespoons olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper
Lettuce for garnish
Simmer chicken breasts
in water, tightly covered, with
1/4 teaspoon salt, onion and
carrot until tender (about 1/2
hour), adding water if neces-
sary. Cool, drain, remove
bones and slice breasts. Mix
the lemon juice with olive oil,
1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper and
Pomi. Pour a small portion of
the sauce onto a platter, place
the sliced chicken breasts on
top and pour the remaining
sauce over the chicken. Gar-
nish with lettuce.
