What is the author’s intent? There is an ambiguity here. Although it is identified as a “short story” and written in the third person, what are we to make of the first person preamble in quotes which may imply that the “story” is a self-description? And what are we to make of the strange picture? Does it have something to say, in its wordless way or is it just there to attract attention?

I have noted a silence slowly invading my life. Is this how it ends?
The Sound of One Pin Dropping
Listen so quiet you can hear a pin drop. He arranged his life to facilitate a mute existence, with everyday the same interactions, with the same others and, soon, for the same purposes. As the necessity for words slowly dissipated, increasingly his life became a wordless affair, transacted sans words a nod, a grunt, a smile or just a blank look replacing whole paragraphs. His became a ghostly life, lived in the world but not of it never of it. (Listen can you hear silence of one pen dropping?) B. W. Reed (August 23, 2011)
