Low Cost Mobile Vaccination Clinic

Members of the neighborhood will be giving 'tours' of the park as well. Services and costs provided for dogs are: Rabies $12.00 Distemper/Parvo $12.00 Bordetella $15.00 Extras: Nail trim $5.00 Heartworm test $17.00 Microchip $20.00 Cats are welcome too! Did You Know?

In addition to his other accomplishments, Sir Isaac Newton is also credited as the inventor of the cat door! 80% of all cats, big or small, respond to catnip. Kittens younger than 6 months and tigers do not respond to catnip A domestic cat can sprint at about 31 miles per hour!

This month's Pet in the Spotlight may be A Whole Lotta Love's tallest client! He's a two and a half year old brindle colored Great Dane named Quest. Weighing 145 lbs of handsomeness, Quest stands at 39 inches at the shoulder (34-36 is the average for male Great Danes, so even by Great Dane standards, he's a monster!) But he is a gentle giant who makes friends whereever he goes. Everyone we pass while walking him and his one year old sister, Libby, wants to know all about him Born in Coldwater, OH, Quest was adopted by Robin Heiges and Amy Sindone. Quest and Libby have been members of the AWLL family since October 2010. To communicate Quest likes to howl like a hound dog and his favorite foods are Chix Strips and AWLL baked treats. We're so glad to give our friends and clients a chance to get to know Questie in our spotlight this month!

Pet in the Spotlight

Augusts A Whole Lotta Love Employee of the Month is Megan Orloski. Megan is one of our stupendous dog walkers and helps us out with pet sitting as well. Born in a small town in Ohio (in the middle of a bunch of cornfields), Megan attended Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio where she received a BS in Chemistry and Biology. She graduated with honors. She has an MA in Genetics and Genomics with a concentration in Mycological Pathogenesis from Duke University. She has applied to vet school and wants to work in a mixed small animal/exotic practice someday. Besides dog walking and pet sitting, Megan is employed at Oak Grove Animal Hospital as a veterinary assistant. She assists the vets and techs in surgery, during appointments and in the kennels. Because Megan devotes all of her time and energy to animals in the vet clinics, volunteering at the Museum of Life and Science where they house many animals and also pet sits for others, she does not currently own any pets. She did have two dogs in her youth, Gus, a Yorkie, and Gabby, a Shih Tzu. She also had a variety of other pets including a rabbit, a cat, two baby squirrels, a family of ducks, a lizard, and a couple of hamsters. She explains that her very first pet was a tarantula! She does want a dog or cat someday. When I asked her what her favorite part of working with animals was, Megan explained, Pets are such wonderful beings. They are loyal to a fault and working with them is nothing but rewarding! We feel lucky to have Megan as part of the AWLL team. For all of these reasons and more, we are proud to have Megan as our August A Whole Lotta Love Employee of the Month.

Rainbow Bridge
This month's article is to commemorate Tugger and Stimpy, two members of the AWLL family who travelled on to the Rainbow Bridge within one month of each other. Stimpy Jack came from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at NCSU's College of Veterinary Medicine when he was brought into ICU where Carina Muehl worked as a Registered Vet Tech. A fellow vet tech had seen him get hit on Hillsborough St, and brought him in after no one on site claimed him. Turned out his homeless owner was there at the time, but didn't speak up. His owner later tried to claim him, and Carina almost quit her state job to keep him. After the dog's 3 days of Good Samaritan funding expired, Carina vaccinated him for rabies to establish ownership and took him home. He'd suffered lung contusions and a broken shoulder blade Much cage rest followed, and he made a full recovery and had a full and happy 14 1/2 more years with Carina. He was 15 years and 2 months old when he passed away of cancer and old age. Tugger also was a stray in the neighborhood, who eventually Carina tried letting her in while recuperating from a back injury. She was worried this cat would come in and go crazy. But, when Carina laid back on the couch, she promptly hopped up and plopped down on top of her. Tugger was home. Tugger was 13 or 14 years old and probably had lymphoma. In honor of Tugger and Stimpy, Ms. Muehl asked us to include the following poem: If it should be that I grow frail and weak ...And pain should keep me from my sleep ...Then you must do what must be done For this, the last battle, can't be won. You will be sad- I understand Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day, more than all the rest Your love and friendship stand the test. We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears You'd not want me to suffer, so When the time comes, please let me go. I know in time you too will see It is a kindness you do to me Although my tail, it's last has waved From pain and suffering I've been saved. Don't grieve that it should be you Who has decided this thing to do We've been so close, we two these years Don't let your heart hold any tears. Author Unknown

Upcoming Dog Wash

Dogs spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer. There are lakes and creeks to splash through and plenty of interesting things to roll around in. Of course this means they also get really dirty, as well! Fortunately an upcoming dog wash sponsored by Whole Foods at 621 Broad Street in Durham on August 27th should help get your best friend all spruced up. The event will be held from 10 am to 2 pm at the Duke Parking lot across the street from the Whole Foods (the parking lot has entrances on Perry and Iredell streets). For a $15.00 suggested donation (or, if possible, more for larger dogs) volunteers will give your dog a lather and rinse and a quick towel dry. For an extra $8.00 your pet can even get a deluxe spa treatment, with a brushing, nail trim, with a bandana and treat thrown in for good measure. Best of all, the proceeds go to help the Animal Protection Society of Durham. A fun time, a good cause, and a clean dog, what could be better than that?!
