Gifts, art found at Trading Post stores

Trading Post Antiques and Trading Post Internationale in downtown Land O Lakes offer a unique mixture of antiques, fine gifts and clothing, with Native American items featured in both establishments. Owners Harold and Barbara Nehring, who have been in business in Land O Lakes for 47 years, have expert knowledge of their fine wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic hand-woven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turn-ofthe-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are supreme examples of the highest-quality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs are perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts also will find a handsome selection of unique, handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including much-sought-after porcupine quill boxes in an amazing variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet-smelling grass, are artistically decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. They are unique to the woodland tribes and are increasingly rare as the art is now limited due to a decreasing number of artists willing to invest the time to make these unique boxes Trading Post Internationale also features fine Native American tradition. Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and deerskin lamps. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood and then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. Representing the woodland tribes, Trading Post Internationale is proud to highlight an unprecedented collection of beautiful antler carvings by Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe artist Wayne Valliere. Valliere, an Ojibwe language and traditions specialist, has traveled worldwide spreading appreciation of the Ojibwe culture. Trading Post Internationale also features Vallieres handcarved pipes, hand-beaded cradle boards and moccasin game drums. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques are both located on Highway B in downtown Land O Lakes. Trading Post Internationale is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays by chance or by appointment Trading Post Antiques is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, or evenings and Sundays by request. For further information, call Trading Post Internationale at (715) 547-3525, or e-mail tradpost@nnex.net. Enjoy browsing through the Native American crafts at the Trading Post Internationale Web site at tradingpostintl.com.

At the Trading Post in Land O Lakes you will find local Native American crafts like the Ojibwe eagle medicine

porcupine quill box. The box is crafted from birch bark, sweet grass and porcupine quills.

clothing for men, women and children, as well as handmade Native American jewelry and moccasins. Woolrich for men, women and children is a prominent name in the clothing department. Montana Coat Co. and Tasha Polizi are two unique lines for women. Hartstrings, Kitestrings, Hatley and Purple Mountain, add to the growing unique childrens department Young peoples gifts also include a carefully selected group of toys and books geared to nature and Native American appreciation. On the traditional side, Trading Post Internationale has a fine selection of classically ele-

gant gifts, such as Bohemian ruby glass, Royal Doulton and Hummel figurines and fine crystal. These items join North Woods decorative accessories such as Native American-made birch-bark mirrors, lamps, dreamcatchers and truly distinctive antler wall hangings. Trading Post Internationale also features handmade, individually designed ceramic lake mugs and other personalized accessories by local artist Judy Thomas of Country Ceramics. Beautiful handmade silver-and-turquoise jewelry from the Southwest, fashioned by Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Santo Domingo Indians, as well as an array of hand-

carved Zuni fetishes, fill the jewelry cases at Trading Post Internationale. A quick visit to Trading Post Antiques next door reveals a whole world of assorted antiques, plus more Native American decorative arts, including Ojibwe birch-bark baskets and Winnebago black ash baskets. Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, tools, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker items, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs. Trading Post Antiques also has Indian Skookum dolls in its comprehensive collection

of handmade items celebrating Native American heritage. These handmade dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after. Each one is hand-painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place, said Nehring. Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a wide variety of Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand-carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand-painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the gods in the Southwest

VACATION WEEK

Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls

Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls is in its fifth season. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive, said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for the golfers. People discover something new each time they come to the course. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape ers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called Nature Calls. The hole features a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf offers discounts to camps, clubs and large groups. There also is a $4-offa-foursome discount, with complimentary coupons found at local businesses and on the back of all Vacation Week issues. The coupons are not available at the course. The course is open seasonally every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. weather permitting. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is located between Trigs Shell Station and Dollar General at 1040 E. Pine St. in Eagle River, just off the highways 45 and 70 bypass. For more information, call (715) 477-0808.

We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course, said Karen Cropsey. Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagles head. In addition to the cas-

cading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes, rivers and fountains. We wanted the water features to really stand out, explained Mark Cropsey. The course has 20,000 gallons of water. ISU-The Machon Agency has experienced, attentive agents

ISU-The Machon Agency owners Bob Werner and Kirke Machon are proud to have an insurance agency in Three Lakes. The agency opened its Three Lakes location Feb. 1, 2009, but it has been family-owned and operated since 1971 when it was founded by Robert Machon in Park Ridge, Ill. The family history of the agency makes this business very special, said Robert Machons daughter, Melissa Werner. The business originated in the Machon familys home. Since outgrowing that location, the business moved to its own building in Park Ridge. The agency has been growing ever since and has served more than 3,000 clients. In 1979, Kirke Machon joined the business his father started, and in 1986 was joined by his brother-in-law, Bob Werner. Together, Bob Werner and Kirke Machon have more than 50 years of insurance business experience. Werner manages the daily operations of the Three Lakes branch of The Machon Agency. The Machon family has owned property in Phelps since the early 1900s and, in 1975, purchased a home in Eagle River. The Werner family became residents of Three Lakes in 2001. Bob Werner and his wife, Melissa, have become well known in the Three Lakes community. They are committed to the North Woods and enjoy contributing to their community through the Three Lakes office. Formerly known as Munz Insurance Agency, the independent insurance agency continues a tradition of excellence by providing business and personal insurance coverage to clients throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and the rest of the country. Kartway offers thrills around every corner

Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous gocart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf and many other activities, the family will never get bored. The traditional road go-cart track is the most popular attraction. When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track, said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for all your racing enjoyment. For the children who cant quite reach the pedals Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. As if the first two courses were not enough, Kartway has a slip track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight car track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement. To cool off on those blistering summer days, Kartway has an assortment of water activities. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this one. For a glorified waterballoon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person then goes to their respective area and loads their water balloons into a slingshot, to send them flying across the divide these games can be purchased for $12, with the seventh free. Guests can also enjoy Rocking W Stables, located right next to Kartway. Riders of any skill level can enjoy a 45- to 50-minute 3-mile guided trail ride on one of the many horses at the stables. Guests can ride solo for $18 or for $25 can ride double on a horse to accommodate younger riders. Pony rides also are available. Rocking W Stables is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kartway is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Special group rates are offered for parties, however, credit cards are not accepted. Kartway and Rocking W Stables are located one mile north of Eagle River at 1890 Morley Road, near the intersection of highways 45 and G. For more information, call Kartway at (715) 479-4450 or Rocking W Stables at (715) 6176779. Also, check out the Web site at northwoodsattractions.com.

Kartway offers plenty of activities for all ages, including a challenging go-cart track, a NasKart track with banked corners, a slick track and a kiddie track.

to soak their opponent. If you want to challenge yourself on the putting green, Kartway has a 18-hole mini golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available in con-

cessions. Picnic areas also are available for guest use. Kartways welltrained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members age 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides.

Tickets for the gocarts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are $4 each. For children age 5 and younger, golf is free. A six-pack of tickets can be purchased for $24, with the seventh free. Tickets for the kiddie karts and boats, as well as Water Wars!, are available for $2 each. A six-pack of tickets for

Homemade fudge, turtles, taffy and more satisfy your sweet tooth at Country Store
The sweet aroma of fudge made with Wisconsin cream and butter or peanut brittle bubbling away in a copper kettle welcome customers as they enter the sweetest place in town, Country Store. For many years, stopping in at Country Store, located in downtown Eagle River, has been a family tradition. Dick and Debbie Preuhs would like to thank all their loyal customers for their support as they begin their 27th summer as owners. A commitment to quality is a reason Country Store has won awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn and cashew snappers. Though fudge and turtles are customer favorites, there are many other great candies and chocolates available. Toffee, almond bark and chocolate pretzels also are popular. A large selection of sugar-free chocolates is available for those with special diet needs. Continuing to be popular this year, cinnamontoasted almonds, pecans and cashews are made right at the store. Country Store has expanded its line of saltwater taffy and has many fun-filled types of candy. It also stocks nostalgic brands of candy for the child in everyone. After customers purchase their candy, they can cool down with a refreshing ice-cream cone, sundae, malt or soda. Customers have more than 24 flavors to choose from, and can get a chocolate-dipped cone or a chocolate-sprinkle cone. Children can enjoy sitting at the stores children only table. In fall, its time to begin the caramel apple season. As customers anticipate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted, said owner Debbie Preuhs. When people start to head home after vacation, gifts of candy from Country Store is a great way to say thank-you or a wonderful remembrance of time spent in Eagle River. Customers tell us all the time they need to bring home Country Store treats for their families, friends or co-workers who are always requesting it, said Debbie Preuhs. Even the family dog is happy to get our special dog bones. Dont forget about Country Store at Christmas. The Country Store

staff is able to help with gifts for family, friends and corporate associates. Order early because Country Store gets very busy around this season. Located at 116 E. Wall St., Country Store is open daily, year-round. Call (715) 479-9226 or visit the Web site at ercandy.com.

Waldmann celebrates 25 years of building

Brad and Judy Waldmann moved to St. Germain in 1985 to fulfill their dream of living in the North Woods. Just days before ringing in the New Year, they took over ownership of the Dutch Door Tavern and began their 25-year journey. By making contacts through the taverns customers, Brad Waldmann began performing small carpentry-related projects with the help of just a few friends. In 1990, after losing the Dutch Door to a fire the previous winter, they became recognized as talented builders as the new Dutch Door Tavern building took shape. Waldmann Construction soon hired several fulltime employees and began the business of building homes. The business grew, as did the firms reputation. With Brad Waldmanns design skills, many homes became unique statements to the owners individual preferences. Clients knew they could count on him to complete their project on time and within budget, said Judy Waldmann. In 1993, Waldmann Construction became inmore efficient in terms of heating than similarsized new homes built in Wisconsin, explained Brad Waldmann. In the last 25 years, Waldmann Construction has grown to its current status of up to 45 highly trained individuals. For optimum quality control, we employ only the highest-skilled personnel, said Judy Waldmann. As a general contractor, Waldmann Construction manages the entire building experience from start to finish. We keep a watchful eye and hands-on approach from the moment the client chooses a plan to the day they move into their finished project, said Brad Waldmann. Our philosophy that a successful project leaves a lasting positive influence on everyone involved has led to repeat business from past clients and many lifelong friendships. Waldmann Construction is licensed in Wisconsin and Michigan. Photos of their many projects and more information can be found on their website at waldmannconstruction.com. Waldmann Construction is located in St. Germain at 6221 Highway 70 E. The office may be contacted at (715) 4793132 or waldmannconstructioninc@frontier .com.

corporated and added the rest of its current inhouse trades, which include excavation, concrete, custom cabinetry, drywall and painting. In addition to homes, Waldmann Construction has built many recognizable commercial buildings including fire stations in St. Germain, Eagle River, Three Lakes and Newbold, and the First National Bank buildings in St. Germain and Three Lakes. Waldmann Construc-

tion also has designed and built additions to many churches in the area, including St. Marys Catholic Church in Sayner, Ely United Church of Christ in Land O Lakes and Pioneer Lake Lutheran Church in Conover. As attention to our environment became an issue in the building industry, Waldmann Construction became a certified green builder and Wisconsin Focus on En-

ergy partner, committed to protecting the environment with sustainable, low-maintenance, energy-efficient homes, said Brad Waldmann. The green building industry is growing by leaps and bounds, despite the recent downturn in the economy, with Waldmann building seven Energy Star-certified homes over the past two years. Alexanders Pizza of Eagle River brings tradition to your table

More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods for summer jobs. They came from a strong Italian community in Chicago where pizza was the staple at home and at college. Since there were no pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed, and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down at them jaundice-eyed and called them brash boys from Chitown. But now the pizzeria has become a landmark. Today, customers come from all over the country to try the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexanders on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexanders a thumbs up. Even though the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same the traditional method of making pizza at Alexanders. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the best, which is stressed by the owners. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozcheese bread appetizer one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and, finally, lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, Si mangia sempre bene! (one always eats well!). Employees at Alexanders Pizza have come from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange-student employees from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexanders Pizza. Alexanders success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple raised and the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is in every bite of crust as well. Although the brothers have experimented with high-tech, cost- and labor-saving methods, the pizza-making method at Alexanders remains traditional. At Alexanders, the pizza is cooked on a 150-pound stone deck. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and a choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexanders has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball machines, video games and several pool and foosball tables. Its a great place to host birthday parties for all ages. Alexanders Pizza, housed in a turn-of-thecentury remodeled building, is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead of time to have the pizza ready when they arrive. Tradition, customer service and fun can always be found at Alexanders Pizza. Alexanders does not accept credit or debit cards. To enjoy the best pizza in the North, call (715) 4797363

EAGLE RIVER
What makes a great-tasting pizza every time?
What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream mozzarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexanders Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food, which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexanders Pizza has the cleanest kitchen youll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexanders Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexanders Pizza thats where. Alexanders Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexanders Pizza is the place for you. For great pizza in Minocqua, call (715) 3562628.
