During the past few days of our topic about sensation and perception, I can honestly say that

it has opened and broadened my mind about how our sense organs affect our behavior. Every sense organ is very crucial to the normal functioning of our body because our sense organs are the only bridge so that our bodies can receive information from the environment. Before, I thought that the information we get from our senses gets transmitted to our brains directly. Little did I know that the information goes through 3 different stages until it gets transmitted to the brain. I learned that a stimulus first goes through the physical stage then the physiological stage and lastly, the psychological stage. In the physical stage, this is where our sense organs receives the information that will be transmitted to the brain while in the physiological stage of the stimulus, it is where the stimulus triggers our body for it to react in very specific ways, and the psychological stage is the perception itself. In my own words, I can say that sensation is when the information or data is received by our sense organs or in other words, it is the experience. While perception is the interpretation of the data or information by the brain,

The human eye is a very interesting part of our body. It enables us to see the world and everything around us. It is said to be the window if the body and soul. Our eyes help us out on a lot of things that we need to do. But a human person is not really very dependent on the human eye because a person can also rely on other senses in order to survive. During our discussion about the sense of sight, I remember several beggars that are just staying on the sides of the road and using their disability so that other people may pity them. Though I still wonder how they get to the same place everyday. I have heard that people who are blind have very sharp sense of hearing. I can relate it to another topic in our other subject called theoretical foundations of nursing, concepts of adaptation, one of the concepts is called redundancy. It means when a

system cannot accomplish the job or part it is supposed to do, another system will take over for the other system. Blind people use their sense of hearing as a replacement for their loss of the sense of sight. I think that it is a nice way of coping up with your disabilities.

The ears are another important sense organ of our body. As I have said, blind people use their ears to see. The ears work by receiving sound waves. These sound waves can either help us or it can be danger for our ears. Because the ears can only tolerate sounds until 120 decibels. Anything more than that, t can be really painful and it can lead to hearing disorders. A person can also select or pick what he or she hears. This is true because in my own experience, when I am enjoying a certain song, I dont hear other noises from the outside world because I am focused on the song that I am listening to. Which has been proven in one of our topics called auditory selectivity.

The sense of smell is said to be the most primitive sense organ of all the other senses. I can say that it is important but not the most primitive sense organ. Because way back, either animals or humans use al their senses in order to survive. Also in or lesson under this topic, it was the first time that I heard that perfume combines with the fats in our body in order to maintain the smell. It was a really useful fact that I have learned.

The sense of taste helps us maintain a healthy body because a person cannot even eat food if they do not like the taste. Good health is also achieved with the presence of taste because without it, a person cannot continue to eat properly. The sense of smell and the sense of taste are very much connected. They would often say that the nose is a twin of the mouth. That is why

sometimes when we have colds, we cannot taste the food we are eating because the smell also helps with the taste of the food but we could not smell because of having colds.

In the sense of taste, food is the first thing that comes into mind. A person needs food to survive. The sense of smell and the sense of taste are very connected with each other. A good example is when a person smells the nice, tasty smell of food; the person would want to eat it right away because he knows that it will taste good because of the smell. I have recently learned that the receptor for the sweet taste of food is at the tip of the tongue. As a person who loves sweets especially chocolates, that would explain the reason why the tip of my tongue hurts when I eat too much sweets.
