Description base class for all piping components. not in rdl. a physical object that is intended to permit, obstruct, regulate or divert fluid flow. a fluid regulator that can be used to control (i.e. permit, obstruct, regulate or divert) a fluid stream. a valve that includes an external means of operation. (e.g. handwheel / lever / actuator.) an operated valve where the operator is an actuator. a valve that includes a means of operation (e.g. spring / gravity / fluid pressure / counter balance), and is not depending on an external source of energy. a control valve that is a self operating valve with a built in actuator (without input of signal or energy from external sources). a self acting control valve that usually is operated by a float mechanism to regulate or maintain a liquid level in a tank. a valve that can be used to modify (regulate) the fluid flow rate in a process control system. it usually includes an actuator, which responds to a signal from the controlling system and changes the position of the flow controlling element in the valve.

In the last three cases the Segment will coincide with a Piping Branch. A fluid system of interconnected piping network branches limited by Unit Operation Inlet/Outlet and Piping Network Terminators.
