JORETT JOSEPH SCIENCE PROJECT 11/5/2010 ZOO/ P5

Problem Statement: What effect do water samples taken at different locations (North of Haulover vs. towards the bay) of Haulover Beach have on the salinity of the samples? Hypothesis: If someone is to go farther toward the bay of Haulover Beach then, the salinity of the water sample will be more than if someone heads towards the North. Null Hypothesis: If someone is to travel north of Haulover Beach or more towards the bay of Haulover it will have no effect on the salinity of the water samples.

Variables: Independent (Manipulated Variable): ~ Water Samples from the North side of Haulover Beach ~ Water Samples from the bay side of Haulover Beach ~heat Dependent (Responding Variable):

~ The amount of salt in water Constant: ~Pot ~Amount of water added to each pot.

Procedures:
1.

Gather all materials and put in a form of transportation. Use duck tape to put labels on the two (1) gallon bottles. Label the first gallon North, and the second gallon Towards the bay.

2.

3.

4. Grab the gallon labeled North and head to the northern most part of Haulover Beach.
5.

Go out into the salt water and fill the gallon labeled north, (Careful not to take in any Sand!). Next repeat steps 4-5 using the gallon labeled towards the bay. For each different gallon pour 4 cups of salt water into 6 separate containers. After place a pot on the stove or hot plate (set for high). Pour one of the containers which contain 4 cups of salt water from north or either towards the bay onto the pot.

6.

7.

8.

9.

10. Check over the pot frequently until the salt is the only thing left at the bottom of the pot.

11. Pour

the salt left over in the pot onto a measuring scale. steps 8-11 with the remaining containers from each group (Towards the bay, North). the amount of salt on a data chart with a category of north and towards the bay.

12. Repeat 13. Record

Results: The results are that towards the bay part of the beach had more salt than the northern part. While doing our experiment one of our trials exploded due to the fact that some sand accidently found its way into to the sample. The samples took approximately 25 minutes each to evaporate all the water. After someone scrapped the salt out of the pot and then put it in a measuring cup each time for each sample. The stove was kept at a constant temperature of high. The data was almost constant for every trial.

Conclusion: The investigation tested was the effect of water samples taken from different locations (north vs. towards the bay) Haulover beach has on the salinity of the samples. Our hypothesis was supported by our data. During our experiment we found that the towards the bay part of the beach had more salt than water from the northern part if the beach. Other researchers experiments obtained the same outcome although they had different data. Salt popping out of pan when we were boiling the water due to sand

beginning collected in the bottle. This probably occurred when we were in the water. We could have used a non stick pan so the salt doesnt get stuck to the bottom of the pot. Take samples from the north, in between (midpoint), and towards the bay. Do not go on a windy day because more sand gets into the bottle. Instead of having to buy high priced salt from the supermarket you can make homemade free pure salt at home.

Abstract: The problem statement is what effect does water samples taken at different locations (North vs. towards the bay) of Haulover Beach have on the salinity of the samples? What was hypothesized is if someone is to go farther towards the bay of Haulover Beach then, the salinity of the water sample will be more than if someone heads towards the North. What needs to be performed to conduct this investigation is use duck tape to put labels on the two (1) gallon bottles. Label the first gallon North, and the second gallon Towards the bay. Grab the gallon labeled North and head to the northern most part of Haulover Beach. Go out into the salt water and fill the gallon labeled north, (Careful not to take in any Sand!).Next repeat steps 4-5 using the gallon labeled towards the bay. For each different gallon pour 4 cups of salt water into 4 separate containers. After place a pot on the stove or hot plate (set for high).Pour one of the containers which contain 4 cups of salt water from north or either towards the bay onto the pot. Check over the pot frequently until the salt is the only thing

left at the bottom of the pot. Pour the salt left over in the pot onto a measuring scale. Record the amount of salt on a data chart with a category of north and towards bay. The results are that the water towards the bay did have more salt than the northern part.. The samples took approximately 25 minutes each to evaporate all the water. After someone scrapped the salt out of the pot and then put it in a measuring cup each time for each sample. The stove was kept at a constant temperature of high. The data was almost constant for every trial. The investigation tested was the effect of water samples taken from different locations of Haulover beach has on the salinity of the samples. Our hypothesis was supported by our data. Other researchers experiments obtained the same outcome although they had different data.
