Mobile Security
While Smartphone and tablet devices now perform the same functions as a PC, one critical feature is missing and that is security. While most PCs or laptops come equipped with anti-virus solutions and other endpoint security software, the vast majority of mobile devices are devoid of any such security protection, leaving both the data and the applications on these mobile devices at risk of exploitation or misuse.
A point worth noting is the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, which is generally removable from the device. These cards may hold subscriber data, contact lists and SMS messages and should be considered in mobile security policy. Devices should be managed such that these cards do not store any critical data, as any data stored can be easily read by anyone with access to the physical SIM card.
Some examples of existing mobile malware include:(Mobile Antivirus Researchers Association, 2006) Mabir/Cabir virus: can infect Symbian OS via Bluetooth/SMS Dampig trojan: corrupts the systems uninstallation settings Commwarrior: tries to disable antivirus software Frontal virus: causes a total system crash of the phone.
