Appendix B Avraham Speaks To Latter-day Priesthood 61

FORWARD The Book of Abraham was originally translated at Kirtland, Ohio and has never been completed, although first published in the Times and Seasons in March 1842. In 1843, Elder John Taylor promised that additional portions would be delivered, however Joseph Smith died before the remainder of the work was to be completed. This version of Sefer Avraham, differs from those previously published, as this translation contains writings found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, called the Genesis Apocryphon [1QapGen]. This version continues after Chapter 5 of the original work published in the Times and Seasons, with Chapters 6 through Chapter 8, with a first person account of Avraham going in and out of Egypt extracted from the Genesis Apocryphon. Footnotes and other references were added to highlight parallel references and explain the certain names, along with the sacred name of our creator, the Tetragrammaton being restored within. This version of Sefer Avraham is to assist with the restoration of eternal covenants by providing continuing revelation to Avrahams posterity and builds upon the great work of the late Hugh W. Nibley. Appendix B offers an explanation of the central theme of Sefer Avraham, along with a stunning prophetic message of warning from Avraham to his posterity living in the latter day, who hold the Priesthood of the Most High Elohim.

INTRODUCTION On July 3, 1835, an Irishman named Michael H. Chandler arrived in Kirtland, with an exhibit of four Egyptian mummies and papyri. Joseph Smith described in his journal: There were four human figures, together with some two or more rolls of papyrus covered with hieroglyphic figures and devices. As Mr. Chandler had been told I could translate them, he brought me some of the characters, and I gave him the interpretation, and like a gentleman, he gave me the following certificate: Kirtland, July 6, 1835 This is to make known to all who may be desirous, concerning the knowledge of Mr. Joseph Smith, Jun., in deciphering the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics characters in my possession, which I have, in many eminent cities, showed to the most learned; and, from the information that I could ever learn, or meet with, I find that of Mr. Joseph Smith, Jun., to correspond in the most minute matters. Michael H. Chandler, Traveling with, and proprietor of, Egyptian mummies. [History of the Church, Vol.2, pg. 235]

Soon after this source of Egyptian hieroglyphics arrived in Kirtland from Michael H. Chandler, Joseph Smith, Jun., wrote in his journal: ...with W.W. Phelps and Oliver Cowdery as scribes, I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Avraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt, etc., - a more full account which will appear in its place, as I proceed to examine or unfold them. Truly we can say, the Lord is beginning to reveal the abundance of peace and truth. [History of the Church, Vol. 2, pg. 236] Joseph Smith, Joseph Coe and Simeon Andrews purchased the four mummies and at least five papyrus documents for $2,400. [Guide ToThe Joseph Smith Papyri]. The Prophet Joseph Smith believed he was blessed to find some of the writings of Avraham and Joseph of Egypt in the mummies that were purchased in 1835 in Kirtland, Ohio. Joseph Smith wrote: I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Avraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt, etc. a more full account of which will appear in its place, as I proceed to examine or unfold them. Truly we can say, the Lord is beginning to reveal the abundance of peace and truth. [History of the Church 2:236].

Later, Joseph Smith gave a description of those writings: The record of Avraham and Joseph, found with the mummies, is beautifully written on papyrus, with black, and a small part red, ink or paint, in perfect preservation. The characters are such as you find upon the coffins of mummies-hieroglyphics, etc., with many characters or letters like the present (though probably not quite so square), form of the Hebrew without points. [History of the Church 2:348]. Joseph Smith related: the brief history of the manner in which the writings of the fathers, Avraham and Joseph, have been preserved, and how I came in possession of the same a correct translation of which I shall give in its proper place. [History of the Church, vol. 2, pg. 348]. In the afternoon, we went into the [Kirtland] Temple, and saw the mummies and the records which were found with them (we went to the prophets house to see him. This is the first I saw him, and shook hands with him). Joseph Smith Senior explained them to us, and said the records were the writings of Avraham and Joseph, Jacobs son. Some of the writing was in black and some in red. He said that the writing in red, was pertaining to the Priesthood. [Warren Foote Autobiography, typescript, BYU-S, pg. 5-5].

A Translation of some ancient Records, that have fallen into our hands, from the catacombs of Egypt, purporting to be the writings of Avraham, while he was in Egypt, called the BOOK OF ABRAHAM, written by his own hand, upon papyrus. See History of the Church, vol. 2, pp. 235, 236, 348351. Additionally, chapters 6-8 are extracted from the Genesis Apocryphon, discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Avraham seeks the blessings of the patriarchal orderHe is persecuted by false priests in ChaldeaYHWH saves himOrigins and government of Egypt reviewed.

1 IN the land of the Chaldeans, at the residence of my fathers, I Avraham 1 , saw that it was needful for me to obtain another place of residence; 2 and, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace 2 , and desiring to receive instructions, and to keep the

The name Avram was changed to Avraham in the July 1842 publication. The Book of Jubilees 2:79, explains that Avram was the name of his maternal grandfather and speaks of fathers plural, in reference to his father and grandfather. 2 Hebrews 7:2; Alma 13:14-18

commandments of Elohim, I became a rightful heir, a high priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers. 3 It was conferred upon me from the fathers; it came down from the fathers, from the beginning of time, yea, even from the beginning, or before the foundation of the earth, down to the present time, even the right of the first born, or the first man, who is Adam, or first father, through the fathers unto me. 3 4 I sought for mine appointment unto the Priesthood according to the appointment of Elohim unto the fathers concerning the seed. 4 5 My fathers 5 , having turned from their righteousness, and from the holy commandments which YHWH their Elohim had given unto them, unto the worshiping of the gods of the heathen, utterly refused to hearken to my voice 6 ; 6 For their hearts were set to do evil, and were wholly turned to the god of Elkenah, and the god of Libnah, and the god of Mahmackrah, and the god of Korash, and the god of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; 7 Therefore they turned their hearts to the sacrifice of the heathen in offering up their children unto these dumb idols, and hearkened not unto my voice, but endeavored to take away my life by the hand of the priest of Elkenah. The priest of Elkenah was also the priest of Pharaoh. 8 Now, at this time it was the custom of the priest of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to offer up upon the altar which

Avram was the firstborn with priesthood rights to pass on that authority. D&C 84:14-22 Priesthood lineage of Adam to Abel to Enoch to Noah to Avraham. 5 Fathers plural, refers to his father and paternal grandfather who were idolaters who were taught the gospel and went astray (The Book of Jubilees 12:6-7). 6 A warning from Avraham to those who hold the latter day priesthood, to not worship as the heathens, lest their priesthood be revoked and they be destroyed.

was built in the land of Chaldea, for the offering unto these strange gods, men, women, and children. 9 And it came to pass that the priest made an offering unto the god of Pharaoh, and also unto the god of Shagreel, even after the manner of the Egyptians. Now the god of Shagreel was the sun 7 . 10 Even the thank-offering of a child did the priest of Pharaoh offer upon the altar which stood by the hill called Potiphars 8 Hill, at the head of the plain of Olishem 9 . 11 Now, this priest had offered upon this altar three virgins at one time, who were the daughters of Onitah, one of the royal descent directly from the loins of Ham. These virgins were offered up because of their virtue; they would not bow down to worship gods of wood or of stone 10 , therefore they were killed upon this altar, and it was done after the manner of the Egyptians. 12 And it came to pass that the priests laid violence upon me, that they might slay me also, as they did those virgins upon this altar; and that you may have a knowledge of this altar, I will refer you to the representation at the commencement of this record.

Shagreel for Shagre-el meaning the sun god. Shigre designates whatever star is at the moment the brightest object in the heavens. Edward W. Lane, An ArabicEnglish Lexicon, 8 vols. (London: Williams and Norgate, 1863), s.v. Shigre. 8 Potiphar translated in Egyptian means the one who Re has appointed. Re/Ra is the Egyptian sun god. Potiphar has a Hebrew definition of belonging to the sun. 9 Olishem can be interpreted as high place of the sun. Olishem appears in an inscription from ca 2250 BC in Northwest Syria [Foster 1993]. 10 Torah admonition against prostrating oneself to other gods [Ex. 20:5]. The Hebrew word for bow down is shachah.

13 It was made after the form of a bedstead 11 , such as was had among the Chaldeans, and it stood before the gods of Elkenah, Libnah, Mahmackrah, Korash, and also a god like unto that of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. 14 That you may have an understanding of these gods, I have given you the fashion of them in the figures at the beginning, which manner of figures is called by the Chaldeans Rahleenos, which signifies hieroglyphics. 15 And as they lifted up their hands upon me, that they might offer me up and take away my life, behold, I lifted up my voice unto YHWH my Elohim, and YHWH hearkened and heard, and He filled me with the vision of the Almighty, and the angel of his presence stood by me, and immediately unloosed my bands; 16 And his voice was unto me: Avraham, Avraham, behold, my name is YHWH, and I have heard thee, and have come down to deliver thee, and to take thee away from thy fathers house, and from all thy kinsfolk, into a strange land which thou knowest not of; 17 And this because they have turned their hearts away from me, to worship the god of Elkenah, and the god of Libnah, and the god of Mahmackrah, and the god of Korash, and the god of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; therefore I have come down to visit them, and to destroy him who hath lifted

Bedstead, meaning the frame of a bed, known as the lion couch in Egyptian culture used for slaughter. Abel was slain for his righteousness, and how many more up to the flood is not much consequence to us now. But if we believe in present revelation, as published in the Times and Seasons last Spring, Abraham, the prophet of the Lord, was laid upon the iron bedstead for slaughter; and the Book of Jasher, which has not been disproved as a bad author, says he was cast into the fire of the Chaldeas. up his hand against thee, Avraham, my son, to take away thy life. 12 18 Behold, I will lead thee by my hand, and I will take thee, to put upon thee my name, even the Priesthood of thy father, and my power shall be over thee. 19 As it was with Noah 13 so shall it be with thee; but through thy ministry my name shall be known in the earth forever, for I am thy Elohim. 20 Behold, Potiphars Hill was in the land of Ur, of Chaldea. And YHWH broke down the altar of Elkenah, and of the gods of the land, and utterly destroyed them, and smote the priest that he died; and there was great mourning in Chaldea, and also in the court of Pharaoh; which Pharaoh signifies king by royal blood. 21 Now this king of Egypt was a descendant from the loins of Ham, and was a partaker of the blood of the Canaanites by birth. 22 From this descent sprang all the Egyptians, and thus the blood of the Canaanites was preserved in the land. 23 The land of Egypt being first discovered by a woman, who was the daughter of Ham, and the daughter of Egyptus, which in the Chaldean signifies Egypt, which signifies that which is forbidden;

12

Avrahams fathers house was steeped in idolatry and are about to be destroyed, as the right of Priesthood of the Most High Elohim will be taken from Avrahams fathers and given to Avraham. Avrahams grandfather and father forfeited their right to the priesthood due to idolatry. This is a prophetic type of the latter-day Priesthood, wherein the Gentiles who were to be fathers [Isaiah 49:23] to the seed of Avraham, would be warned of their sun worship and except they repent, their priesthood would be removed and they would be destroyed. Also JST Gen 17:3-7. 13 Matthew 24:38-39

24 When this woman discovered the land, it was under water, who afterward settled her sons in it; and thus, from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land. 25 Now the first government of Egypt was established by Pharaoh, the eldest son of Egyptus, the daughter of Ham, and it was after the manner of the government of Ham, which was patriarchal. 26 Pharaoh, being a righteous man, established his kingdom and judged his people wisely and justly all his days, seeking earnestly to imitate that order established by the fathers in the first generations, in the days of the first patriarchal reign, even in the reign of Adam, and also of Noah, his father, who blessed him with the blessings of the earth, and with the blessings of wisdom, but cursed him as pertaining to the Priesthood. 27 Now, Pharaoh being of that lineage by which he could not have the right of Priesthood, notwithstanding the Pharaohs would fain claim it from Noah, through Ham, therefore my father was led away by their idolatry; 14 28 But I shall endeavor, hereafter, to delineate the chronology running back from myself to the beginning of the creation, for the records have come into my hands, which I hold unto this present time. 29 Now, after the priest of Elkenah was smitten that he died, there came a fulfillment of those things which were said unto me concerning the land of Chaldea, that there should be a famine in the land. 30 Accordingly a famine prevailed throughout all the land of Chaldea, and my father was sorely tormented because of

the famine, and he repented of the evil which he had determined against me, to take away my life. 15 31 But the records of the fathers, even the patriarchs, concerning the right of Priesthood, YHWH my Elohim preserved in mine own hands; therefore a knowledge of the beginning of the creation, and also of the planets, and of the stars, as they were made known unto the fathers, have I kept even unto this day, and I shall endeavor to write some of these things upon this record, for the benefit of my posterity that shall come after me. 16

Famine was judgment for wickedness in rejecting the fullness of the gospel. See Isaiah 51:19, Amos 4:6, Jeremiah 14:13-18, Ether 9:28, Helaman 10:6, D&C 87:6. 16 Book of Enoch, as discussed in Chapter 6:4, Avraham desires those in the future to understand that the Book of Enoch contains important information for his seed as the Book of Enoch speaks directly to those who keep the Torah in the latter day. Avraham is desiring to confirm that the latter days will be similar to his day when the priesthood was removed from the wicked and given to the righteous.

CHAPTER 2
Avraham leaves Ur to go to CanaanYHWH appears to him at HaranAll gospel blessings are promised to his seed, and through his seed to allHe goes to Canaan, and on to Egypt.

1 NOW YHWH Elohim caused the famine to wax sore in the land of Ur, insomuch that Haran, my brother, died 17 ; but Terah, my father, yet lived in the land of Ur, of the Chaldees 18 . 2 And it came to pass that I, Avraham, took Sarai to wife, and Nahor, my brother, took Milcah to wife, who was the daughter of Haran 19 . 3 Now YHWH had said unto me: Avraham, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy fathers house, unto a land that I will show thee 20 . 4 Therefore I left the land of Ur, of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and I took Lot, my brothers son, and his wife, and Sarai my wife; and also my father followed after me, unto the land which we denominated Haran 21 . 5 And the famine abated; and my father tarried in Haran and dwelt there, as there were many flocks in Haran; and my father turned again unto his idolatry, therefore he continued in Haran. 6 But I, Avraham, and Lot, my brothers son, prayed unto YHWH, and YHWH appeared unto me, and said unto me:

Arise, and take Lot with thee; for I have purposed to take thee away out of Haran, and to make of thee a minister to bear my name in a strange land which I will give unto thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession, when they hearken to my voice 22 . 7 For I am YHWH thy Elohim; I dwell in heaven; the earth is my footstool; I stretch my hand over the sea, and it obeys my voice; I cause the wind and the fire to be my chariot; I say to the mountainsDepart henceand behold, they are taken away by a whirlwind, in an instant, suddenly. 8 My name is YHWH, and I know the end from the beginning; therefore my hand shall be over thee 23 . 9 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee above measure, and make thy name great among all nations, and thou shalt be a blessing unto thy seed after thee, that in their hands they shall bear this ministry and Priesthood unto all nations 24 ; 10 And I will bless them through thy name; for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father; 11 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee (that is, in thy Priesthood) and in thy seed (that is, thy Priesthood), for I give unto thee a promise that this right shall continue in thee, and in thy seed after thee (that is to say, the literal seed, or the seed of the body) shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with

the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal 25 . 12 Now, after YHWH had withdrawn from speaking to me, and withdrawn his face from me, I said in my heart: Thy servant has sought thee earnestly; now I have found thee; 13 Thou didst send thine angel to deliver me from the gods of Elkenah 26 , and I will do well to hearken unto thy voice, therefore let thy servant rise up and depart in peace. 14 So I, Avraham, departed as YHWH had said unto me, and Lot with me; and I, Avraham, was sixty and two years old when I departed out of Haran 27 . 15 And I took Sarai, whom I took to wife 28 when I was in Ur, in Chaldea, and Lot, my brothers son, and all our substance that we had gathered, and the souls 29 that we had

Genesis 12:3 The god of Elkenah is the primary deity of the Egyptians called Ra, a derivative of the Canaanite god El. 27 Genesis 12:4 28 Genesis 12:11 29 The Book of Jasher 34:41 reports that the servants of King Nimrod attached to Avraham after being delivered by YHWH from the furnace of King Nimrod for not following his father Terahs idolatry. This is a type of the latter day Gentiles of the ten tribes prophesied to attach to the Jew of Zechariah 8:23 and go with him. PseudoPhilo reads: Abrahams days were similar to the days of Noah, in that wickedness was great and in that there were natural upheavals in the heavens and the earth and the mountains and all the creatures in them. Then God sent a great earthquake, and fire gushed forth from the furnace and broke out into flames and sparks of fire and consumed all them that stood around, 83,500 of them. Abraham there was not the least hurt by the burning of fire. Avraham saw the end to the Nimrod sun worship, as he prophesied to King Nimrod: And if thy wicked heart will not hearken to my words to cause thee to forsake thy evil ways and to serve the eternal Elohim, then wilt thou die in shame in the latter days, thou, thy people and all who are connected with thee, hearing thy words or walking in thy evil ways. won in Haran, and came forth in the way to the land of Canaan, and dwelt in tents as we came on our way 30 ; 16 Therefore, eternity was our covering and our rock and our salvation, as we journeyed from Haran by the way of Jershon 31 , to come to the land of Canaan. 17 Now I, Avraham, built an altar in the land of Jershon, and made an offering unto YHWH, and prayed that the famine might be turned away from my fathers house, that they might not perish 32 . 18 And then we passed from Jershon through the land unto the place of Sechem 33 ; it was situated in the plains of Moreh, and we had already come into the borders of the land of the Canaanites, and I offered sacrifice there in the

Genesis 12:5 The place Jershon is also found at Alma 27:22, 23-24, 26; 28:1, 8; 30:1, 19; 31:3; 35:1-2, 6, 8, 13-14; 43:4, 15, 18, 22, 25. As defined in the Book of Mormon, it could be a land of inheritance and/or a safety zone between two dissenting peoples. Avraham was sojourning in this zone after he left Haran towards Shechem [BofA 2:16-17] and it could be that he knew this land would be inherited by his seed in the future and thus the term Jershon is synonymous with the character of the land, as a future land of inheritance that was currently not belonging to him. This was a time when the Canaanites were gradually conquering Israel.

References to the ending of blood sacrifices in the BofM at Alma 34:13 and 3 Nephi 9:19-20, apply to the Law of Moses given on the Day of Atonement/Yom Kippur, after the first tablets were broken by Moses. The second giving at Sinai was a tutor to lead Israel into faith. See JST Exodus 34:1-2 and JST Deuteronomy 10:2. Joseph Smith instituted the use of altars in Temple ordinances as a type of future restoration through Messiah and His renewed covenant. Joseph Smith said, sacrifices as well as every ordinance belonging to the priesthood will, when the Temple of the Lord shall be built and the sons of Levi be purified be fully restored and attended to, then all their powers, ramifications, and blessings this ever was and will exist when the powers of the Melchizedek Priesthood are sufficiently manifest. 1 AND I, Avraham, had the Urim and Thummim 42 , which YHWH my Elohim had given unto me, in Ur of the Chaldees; 2 And I saw the stars 43 , that they were very great, and that one of them was nearest unto the throne of Elohim; and there were many great ones which were near unto it; 3 And YHWH said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of the great one is Kolob 44 , because it is near unto me, for I am YHWH thy Elohim; I have set this one to

The Hebrew word olov means with him and this fits the context of Kolob being near unto me [BofA 3:3], and nigh unto the throne [BofA 3:9]. The Hebrew word Kelev is connected to the dog star Sirius, also called Shighre in Egyptian sun worship. The most important event in the history of the universe according to the Egyptians, was the heliacal rising of Sirius, when Sirius, the sun and the Nile all rose together in the morning of the New Year. Faulkner, King and the Star-Religion in the Pyramid Texts. The New Year Day of Creation according to ancient Israel, is Rosh Hashanah/Yom Teruah, which is the same day the plates came forth from Moroni. This dog star is also called Regulus, the Star of Kingship, the brightest star in the constellation of Leo the Lion. Leo is the constellation of Kings, associated with the Lion of Judah. The name Kolob Kolov can be understood to be the Star of Kingship, nearest unto YHWH. Kolob is "the great governing star of our universe" and "the residence of God." govern all those which belong to the same order as that upon which thou standest. 4 And YHWH said unto me, by the Urim and Thummim, that Kolob was after the manner of YHWH, according to its times and seasons in the revolutions thereof; that one revolution was a day unto YHWH, after his manner of reckoning, it being one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest. This is the reckoning of the time of YHWH 45 , according to the reckoning of Kolob. 5 And YHWH said unto me: The planet which is the lesser light, lesser than that which is to rule the day, even the night, is above or greater than that upon which thou standest in point of reckoning, for it moveth in order more slow; this is in order because it standeth above the earth upon which thou standest, therefore the reckoning of its time is not so many as to its number of days, and of months, and of years. 6 And YHWH said unto me: Now, Avraham, these two facts exist, behold thine eyes see it; it is given unto thee to know the times of reckoning, and the set time, yea, the set time of the earth upon which thou standest, and the set time of the greater light which is set to rule the day, and the set time of the lesser light which is set to rule the night. 7 Now the set time of the lesser light is a longer time as to its reckoning than the reckoning of the time of the earth upon which thou standest. 8 And where these two facts exist, there shall be another fact above them, that is, there shall be another planet whose reckoning of time shall be longer still;

9 And thus there shall be the reckoning of the time of one planet above another, until thou come nigh unto Kolob, which Kolob is after the reckoning of the time of YHWH; which Kolob is set nigh unto the throne of Elohim, to govern all those planets which belong to the same order as that upon thou standest. 10 And it is given unto thee to know the set time of all the stars that are set to give light, until thou come near unto the throne of Elohim. 11 Thus I, Avraham, talked with YHWH, face to face, as one man talketh with another; and He told me of the works which his hands had made; 12 And He said unto me: My son, my son (and his hand was stretched out), behold I will show you all these. And he put his hand upon mine eyes, and I saw those things which his hands had made, which were many; and they multiplied before mine eyes, and I could not see the end thereof. 13 And He said unto me: This is Shinehah 46 , which is the sun. And he said unto me: Kokob 47 , which is star. And he said unto me: Olea 48 , which is the moon. And he said unto me: Kokaubeam 49 , which signifies stars, or all the great lights, which were in the firmament of heaven. 14 And it was in the night time when YHWH spake these words unto me: I will multiply thee, and thy seed after thee,

The letters n and h in the word Shinehah, may be transposed, making it the Hebrew word Shekinah, perceived as rays of the sun coming from behind the dark cloud. The Zohar 47 Kokab is the Hebrew word for star. 48 Oleh is a Hebrew word meaning one who ascends, as the moon. 49 Kokaubeam is Kokobim, meaning many stars, as the im is plural in Hebrew.

like unto these; and if thou canst count the number of sands, so shall be the number of thy seeds 50 . 15 And YHWH said unto me: Avraham, I show these things unto thee before ye go into Egypt, that ye may declare all these words. 16 If two things exist, and there be one above the other, there shall be greater things above them; therefore Kolob is the greatest of all the Kokaubeam that thou hast seen, because it is nearest unto me. 17 Now, if there be two things, one above the other, and the moon be above the earth, then it may be that a planet or a star may exist above it; and there is nothing that YHWH thy Elohim shall take in his heart to do but what he will do it. 18 Howbeit that he made the greater star; as, also, if there be two spirits, and one shall be more intelligent than the other, yet these two spirits, notwithstanding one is more intelligent than the other, have no beginning; they existed before, they shall have no end, they shall exist after, for they are gnolaum 51 , or eternal.
Genesis 13:16 Gan Olam (ng Ml() means eternal garden. Additionally, the G is the Hebrew letter Gimel g which represents the Holy Spirit proceeding forth from the Father and it also represents the Son Yahushua Messiah. The letter N in gnolaum is used in the Egyptian language as a preposition for to, for, just as the Hebrew letter L, called the Lamed l is used as a preposition for to, for. The word LOlam in Hebrew means for eternity. The letters olaum in the word gnolaum are phoenetic for the Hebrew word Olam, meaning everlasting, eternal. The word gnolaum can be also be understood with a meaning of the Holy Spirit and Son proceeded forth from the Father, for eternity. This describes the relationship between the Higher Power of the Father to the lesser powers of the Holy Spirit and Son in the Godhead and is in context with the two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other and yet the Father being more intelligent than both [ v. 19].

19 And YHWH said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am YHWH thy Elohim, I am more intelligent than they all. 52 20 YHWH thy Elohim sent his angel to deliver thee from the hands of the priest of Elkenah. 21 I dwell in the midst of them all; I now, therefore, have come down unto thee to declare unto thee the works which my hands have made, wherein my wisdom excelleth them all, for I rule in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath, in all wisdom and prudence, over all the intelligences thine eyes have seen from the beginning; I came down in the beginning in the midst of all the intelligences thou hast seen. 22 Now YHWH had shown unto me, Avraham, the intelligences that were organized 53 before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; 23 And Elohim saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me:

Avraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born 54 . 24 And there stood one among them that was like unto Elohim, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell; 25 And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever YHWH their Elohim shall command them; 26 And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon; and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever. 27 And YHWH said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me 55 . CHAPTER 4
Elohim designs the creation of the earth and all life thereon, for the six days of creation are set forth.

1 AND then YHWH said: Let us go down. And they went down at the beginning, and they, that is Elohim 58 , organized and formed and formed the heavens and the earth 59 . 2 And the earth, after it was formed, was empty and desolate, because they had not formed anything but the earth 60 ; and darkness reigned upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of Elohim was brooding upon the face of the waters 61 . 3 And Elohim said: Let there be light; and there was light 62 . 4 And Elohim comprehended the light, for it was bright; and they divided the light, or caused it to be divided, from the darkness 63 . 5 And Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness they called Night. And it came to pass that from the evening until

Clementine Recognitions, 1:33 repeats the story of the Book of Avraham saying that Messiah appeared to Abraham and taught him the knowledge of the godhead, showed him the origin of the world and its end; revealed to him the principles of immortality and the manner of life which was pleasing to God; declared also to him the doctrine of resurrection of the dead, of the future judgments, and of rewards and punishments to come. 59 Genesis 1:1; Moses 2:1 60 This earth was organized or formed out of other planets which were broke up and remodeled and made into the one on which we live. morning they called night; and from the morning until the evening they called day; and this was the first, or the beginning, of that which they called day and night 64 . 6 And Elohim also said: Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and it shall divide the waters from the waters 65 . 7 And Elohim ordered the expanse, so that it divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so, even as they ordered 66 . 8 And Elohim called the expanse, Heaven. And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning that they called night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that they called day; and this was the second time that they called night and day 67 . 9 And Elohim ordered, saying: Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the earth come up dry; and it was so as they ordered 68 ; 10 And Elohim pronounced the dry land, Earth; and the gathering together of the waters, pronounced they, Great Waters; and Elohim saw that they were obeyed. 11 And Elohim said: Let us prepare the earth to bring forth grass; the herb yielding seed; the fruit tree yielding fruit,

after his kind, whose seed in itself yieldeth its own likeness upon the earth; and it was so, even as they ordered 69 . 12 And Elohim organized the earth to bring forth grass from its own seed, and the herb to bring forth herb from its own seed, yielding seed after his kind; and the earth to bring forth the tree from its own seed, yielding fruit, whose seed could only bring forth the same in itself, after his kind; and Elohim saw that they were obeyed 70 . 13 And it came to pass that they numbered the days; from the evening until the morning they called night; and it came to pass, from the morning until the evening they called day; and it was the third time 71 . 14 And Elohim organized [created] the lights in the expanse of the heaven, and caused them to divide the day from the night; and organized them to be for signs and for seasons, and for days and for years 72 ; 15 And organized them to be for lights in the expanse of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so 73 . 16 And Elohim organized the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; with the lesser light they set the stars also 74 ; 17 And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens, to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to cause to divide the light from the darkness 75 .

18 And Elohim watched those things which they had ordered until they obeyed. 19 And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning that it was night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that it was day; and it was the fourth time 76 . 20 And Elohim said: Let us prepare the waters to bring forth abundantly the moving creatures that have life; and the fowl, that they may fly above the earth in the open expanse of heaven 77 . 21 And Elohim prepared the waters that they might bring forth great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters were to bring forth abundantly after their kind; and every winged fowl after their kind. And Elohim saw that they would be obeyed, and that their plan was good 78 . 22 And Elohim said: We will bless them, and cause them to be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas or great waters; and cause the fowl to multiply in the earth 79 . 23 And it came to pass that it was from evening until morning that they called night; and it came to pass that it was from morning until evening that they called day; and it was the fifth time 80 . 24 And Elohim prepared the earth to bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind; and it was so, as they had said 81 .

25 And Elohim organized the earth to bring forth the beasts after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after its kind; and Elohim saw they would obey. 26 And Elohim took counsel among themselves and said: Let us go down and form man in our image 82 , after our likeness; and we will give them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth 83 . 27 So Elohim went down to organize man in their own image, in the image of Elohim to form they him, male and female to form they them 84 . 28 And Elohim said: We will bless them. CHAPTER 6
Sefer Avraham was not completed by Joseph Smith, due to his death. The 3rd Facsimile implies that the text would have continued to record Avrahams journey into Egypt. The Genesis Apocryphon [1QapGen] beginning with 1Q20, Col. 19-21 continues with his visit into Egypt. Sefer Avraham, as originally translated by Joseph Smith [CH 2:2225] and the Genesis Apocryphon portion [CH 6:3], agree that YHWH encouraged Avraham tell Sarai to tell all, that she was his sister.

1 I, Avraham built an altar at Bethel and called to Elohim praising Him. I then went to the Holy mountain and to Hebron where I lived for two years because there was a famine in the land and my family and I traveled to Egypt where grain was plentiful. 2 I went across the branches of the Nile to enter Egypt, the land of the sons of Ham. I had a dream about a cedar tree and a date-palm tree. When people came to cut down the cedar tree, the date-palm tree objected, saying that they were grown from a single root. The cedar tree was spared. 3 I became fearful of the dream and told it to my wife. I explained it as it pertained to us, telling Sarah that the men will come for her and try to kill me. I warned Sarah that she must tell everyone that I am her brother so that my life can be spared. She became scared and did not want to go to Zoan for fear of being seen 110 .

4 Five years later, councilors of the Egyptians court and advisors of the Pharoah of Zoan came, having heard the words of my life. They brought gifts and requested knowledge from me. I read them from the Book of the words of Enoch 111 .

Avraham knew about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and other writings, as he read the writings of Enoch who prophesied that books would come forth in the latter days that would cause great joy, uprightness and wisdom. Enoch 104:10-13. Additionally, the sealed portion will also be forthcoming, along with writings from the tribes of Israel who were visited by Yahushua Messiah. Enoch wrote to his posterity who will be living in the day of tribulation when the wicked and godless are to be removed and this is a type of Avrahams day for us to heed. 1 Enoch 1:1. Enoch was primarily written to latter day Israelites who observe the Torah. See 1 Enoch 108:1.

CHAPTER 7
First person account from Avraham. Pharoah takes Sarah as a wife. Sarah saved Avraham by telling the Pharoah that he was her brother. Avraham prays for justice and YHWH raises up an evil spirit to the house of Pharoah to keep him from consummating his marriage to Sarah. When the plagues and afflictions became great upon Pharoahs household, Hyracanos asked Avraham for help and he agreed to exorcise the evil spirits only if Sarah was returned to him. After Sarah was returned to Avraham, they left Egypt with Lot. Genesis Apocryphon 1Q20, Col. 20

1 The men returned to the Pharaoh and described Sarahs features: beautiful face, supple hair, lovely eyes, pleasant nose, radiant face. 2 They continued on describing her shapely breasts, perfect hands, and everything down to her long and delicate fingers. The men compared her to and rated her far higher than virgins and birds, and all other women alike. 3 Hearing this, and then seeing Sarah, the Pharoah wanted her and took her for his wife. 4 Sarah saved me by telling the Pharoah that I was her brother and that night I and my nephew Lot cried together. 5 I prayed to YHWH for justice. I wanted YHWH to rise up against the Pharoah and protect Sarah. 6 YHWH listened and sent an evil spirit to the entire household that prevented the Pharoah from having sexual relations with Sarah for the two years that they were together 112 .

7 At the end of the two years, the plagues and afflictions were so great that magicians and healers were sent for. They were, of course, ineffective, and they all soon left. 8 Hyrcanos went to me pleading for help against the plague because I had been seen in a dream. 9 I agreed to help only when my wife Sarah is returned to me. 10 The Pharoah heard this and confronted me, himself asking why I lied saying that Sarah was my sister 113 . 11 He agreed to give Sarah back and I exorcised the evil spirit from the house of the Pharoah. The Pharoah swore to me that he had not touched Sarah while they were together and gave her gifts of gold, silver, linen, and purple-dyed clothing. 12 Sarah and I were then led out of Egypt. I, Sarah, Lot, and his wife took our flocks and the gold and silver I had received and traveled together 114 .

CHAPTER 8
First person account from Avraham departing from Egypt, receiving promise from YHWH that his descendants would be multiplied like the dust of the earth that no one can count. Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and capture of Lot. Genesis Apocryphon 1Q20, Col 21.

1 I went to all my old campsites until I reached Bethel, the place where I once built an altar 115 , and then I built another one and offered up burnt offerings and a cereal offerings to the Elohim of Most High, and invoked the name of the Master of the Universe there. 2 I praised the name of YHWH and blessed Elohim and gave thanks to Him there for all the flocks and goods and wealth which He has given me, for the good He has done for me, and because He had returned me to this land safely. 3 After this day, Lot left me on the account of our shepherds behavior. He went to live in the Valley of Jordan taking all his flocks with him. And I also added greatly to what he had. He pastured his flock and kept moving until he reached Sodom and bought a house there, while I still lived in the mountain of Bethel. It bothered me that Lot and I had separated 116 . 4 YHWH came to me in a dream and said to me: Go up to Ramat Hazar, which is north of Bethel, the place you are living now, and look to the east, west, south and to the north. Look at the land which I am giving you and your descendants forever 117 .

5 The next morning, I went up to Ramat Hazar and looked at the land from that height, from the river of Egypt up to Lebanon and Senir, and from the Great Sea up to Hauran, and all the land of Gebel to Qadesh, and all the Great Desert, as far as the Euphrates and he said to me: I shall give all this land to your descendants; and they will inherit it forever. 6 I will multiply your descendants like the dust of the earth that none can count. Your descendants will be numberless. Arise, walk about, go see how long and how wide it is, for I will give it to you and to your descendants after you, forever 118 . 7 Then I, Avraham, went out traveling in a circuit to survey the land. I began the circuit at the Gihion River, I went along the Mediterranean Sea until I reached the Mountain of Bull. 8 I circled from the coast of this great river saltwater sea, skirting the Mount of the Bull, and continued eastward through the breadth of the land until I cam to the Euphrates River. 9 I traveled along the Euphrates until I reached the red sea in the east, whence I followed the coast of the Red Sea until I came to the branch of the Reed Sea, jutting out from the Red Sea. 10 From there, I completed the circuit, moving southward to arrive at Gihon River. Then I returned home safely and found all is well with my men. 11 Then I went and settled next to the oaks of Mamre, which is northeast of Hebron. There I built an altar and

offered up burnt offering and a cereal offering to YHWH Most High 119 . 12 I ate and drank there, I and all the men of my household, and invited Mamre, Arnem, and Eshkol, three Amorite brothers and my friends 120 . 13 They ate and drank together with me 121 . Prior to those days Chedorlaomer, the king of Elam, Amraphel, the king of Babylon, Arioch, the king of Cappadocia, and Tidal, the king of Goiim, which lies between the two rivers had come. 14 They waged war on Bera, the king of Sodom, Birsha, the king of Gomorrah, Shinab, the king of Admah, Shemiabad, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela. All these formed an alliance to do battle in the Valley of Siddim 122 . 15 Now the king of Elam, and the kings with him proved to be stronger than the king of Sodom and imposed tribute upon them 123 . 16 Over twelve years they continued paying their tribute to the king of Elam, but in the thirteenth, they rebelled against him. 17 Thus the fourteenth year the king of Elam sallied forth with all his allies, and they ascended by the way of the desert. 18 They smote and plundered beginning from the Euphrates. They kept on smiting and smiting the Raphaim who were in the Asteroth Kernaim, the Zumzammin who

FACSIMILE NO. 2 EXPLANATION

Fig. 1. Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of Elohim. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh. Fig. 2. Stands next to Kolob, called by the Egyptians Oliblish, which is the next grand governing creation near to the celestial or the place where Elohim resides; holding the key of power also, pertaining to other planets; as revealed from Elohim to Avraham, as he offered sacrifice upon an altar, which he had built unto YHWH. Fig. 3. Is made to represent Elohim, sitting upon his throne, clothed with power and authority; with a crown of eternal light upon his head; representing also the grand Key-words of the Holy Priesthood, as revealed to Adam in the Garden of Eden, as also to Seth, Noah, Melchizedek, Avraham, and all to whom the Priesthood was revealed. Fig. 4. Answers to the Hebrew word Raukeeyang, signifying expanse, or the firmament of the heavens; also a numerical figure, in Egyptian signifying one thousand; answering to the measuring of the time of Oliblish, which is equal with Kolob in its revolution and in its measuring of time. Fig. 5. Is called in Egyptian Enish-go-on-dosh; this is one of the governing planets also, and is said by the Egyptians to be the Sun, and to borrow its light from Kolob through the medium of Kae-e-vanrash, which is the grand Key, or, in other words, the governing power, which governs fifteen other fixed planets or stars, as also Floeese or the Moon, the Earth and the Sun in their annual revolutions. This planet receives its power through the medium of Kli-flos-is-es, or Hah-ko-kau-beam, the stars represented by numbers 22 and 23, receiving light from the revolutions of Kolob. Fig. 6. Represents this earth in its four quarters. Fig. 7. Represents Elohim sitting upon his throne, revealing through the heavens the grand Key-words of the Priesthood; as, also, the sign of the Holy Ghost unto Avraham, in the form of a dove. Fig. 8. Contains writings that cannot be revealed unto the world; but is to be had in the Holy Temple of Elohim. Fig. 9. Ought not to be revealed at the present time. Fig. 10. Also. Fig. 11. Also. If the world can find out these numbers, so let it be. Amen. Figures 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 will be given in the own due time of YHWH. The above translation is given as far as we have any right to give at the present time.

APPENDIX A LATTER DAY SAINTS MESSENGER AND ADVOCATE Vol. II. No. 3, Kirtland, Ohio, December, 1835. To the Elders of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. To John Whitmer Esq. Egyptian Mummies-Ancient Records. The public mind has been excited, of late, by reports which have been circulated concerning certain Egyptian Mummies, and a quantity of ancient records, which were purchased by certain gentlemen in this place, last summer. It has been said, that the purchasers of these antiquities pretend they have the body of Avraham, Abimelech, the king of the Philistines, Joseph, who was sold into Egypt, &c. &c. for the purpose of attracting the attention of the multitude, and gulling the unwary-which is utterly false. For the purpose of correcting these and other erroneous statements, concerning both the mummies and also the records, we give an extract of a letter written by a friend in this place, who possesses correct knowledge concerning this matter, to a gentleman who resides at a distance.
50

Who these ancient inhabitants of Egypt are, we do not pretend to say,-neither does it matter to us. We have no idea or expectation, that either of them are Avraham, Abimelech, or Joseph. Avraham was buried on his own possession, "in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre," which he purchased of the sons of Heth; Abimelech lived in the same country, and for aught we know, died there, and the children of Israel carried Joseph's bones from Egypt when they went out under Moses. Consequently, could not have been found in Egypt in the 19th century. But the records are the most important, concerning which, we refer our readers to the extract for information. "Kirtland, Geauga Co. O., } December 22, 1835." } Yours of the 8th Oct. furnishes matter of importance. You say truly when you say, "Verily, this is a great and marvelous work, indeed." Others may be endowed with a superior ability to myself, and thereby be the better qualified to appreciate the great condescension of our God in lighting up this earth once more with such intelligence from his presence, by the ministering of his holy angels and by his own voice. Be this as it may, with the ability I have I endeavor to be thankful.

51

That the Lord should again manifest something for the benefit of man in the last days, is perfectly consistent, and so exactly accords with that written by the holy prophets and apostles, that it is apparent to me, that none can reject the fulness [fullness] of the gospel, except such as are led by an influence other than heavenly, or wilful [willful] blindness. But so it is, and yet the work spreads and prospers. And considering the weak instruments engaged to spread it, it cannot but be acknowledged that the hand of our God is put forth, to roll on his work, his strange work, in the eyes of the nations. My sincere prayer is, that I may be fully qualified, by his grace, to do the part assigned me, that I may stand when he appeareth. Upon the subject of the Egyptian records, or rather the writings of Avraham and Joseph, I may say a few words. This record is beautifully written on papyrus with black, and a small part, red ink or paint, in perfect preservation. The characters are such as you find upon the coffins of mummies, hieroglyphics, &c. with many characters or letters exactly like the present, (though probably not quite so square,) form of the Hebrew without points. These records were obtained from one of the catacombs in Egypt, near the place where once stood the renowned city of Thebes, by the celebrated French traveller [traveler] Antonio Lebolo, in the year 1831. He procured license from Mehemet Ali, then Viceroy of Egypt, under the protection of Chevalier Drovetti, the French Consul, in the year 1828; employed 433 men four months and two days, (if I understood correctly, Egyptians or Turkish soldiers,) at from four to six cents per
52

diem, each man; entered the catacomb June 7th, 1831, and obtained eleven Mummies. There were several hundred Mummies in the same catacomb: about one hundred embalmed after the first order, and deposited and placed in niches, and two or three hundred after the second and third order, and laid upon the floor or bottom of the grand cavity, the two last orders of embalmed were so decayed that they could not be removed, and only eleven of the first, found in the niches. On his way from Alexandria to Paris he put in at Trieste, and after ten days illness, expired. This was in the year 1832. Previous to his decease, he made a will of the whole to Mr. Michael H. Chandler, then in Philadelphia, Pa. his nephew, whom he supposed to have been in Ireland. Accordingly the whole were sent to Dublin, addressed according, and Mr. Chandler's friends ordered them sent to New York, where they were received at the custom house, in the winter or spring of 1833. In April of the same year Mr. Chandler paid the duties upon his Mummies, and took possession of the same. Up to this time they had not been taken out of the coffins nor the coffins opened. On opening the coffins he discovered that in connection with two of the bodies, were something rolled up with the same kind of linen, saturated with the same bitumen, which, when examined, proved to be two rolls of papyrus, previously mentioned. I may add that two or three other small pieces of papyrus, with astronomical calculations, epitaphs, were found with others of the Mummies.

53

When Mr. Chandler discovered that there was something with the Mummies, he supposed, or hoped it might be some diamonds or other valuable metal, and was no little chagrined when he saw his disappointment. He was immediately told, while yet in the Custom House, that there was no man in that city, who could translate his roll; but was referred by the same gentleman, (a stranger,) to Mr. Joseph Smith, jr. who, continued he, possesses some kind of power or gifts by which he had previously translate similar characters. Bro. Smith was then unknown to Mr. Chandler, neither did he know that such a book or work as the record of the Nephites had been brought before the public. From New York he took his collection to Philadelphia, where he exhibited them for a compensation. The following is a certificate put into my hands by Mr. Chandler, which he obtained while in Philadelphia and will show the opinion of the scientific of that city: "Having examined with considerable attention and deep interest, a number of Mummies from the Catacombs, near Thebes, in Egypt, and now exhibiting in the Arcade, we beg leave to recommend them to the observation of the curious inquirer on subjects of a period so long elapsed; probably not less than three thousand years ago.-The features of some of these Mummies are in perfect expression. The papyrus, covered with black or red ink, or paint, in excellent preservation, are very interesting.

54

The undersigned, unsolicited by any person connected by interest with this exhibition, have voluntarily set their names hereunto, for the simple purpose of calling the attention of the public, to an interesting collection, not sufficiently known in this city." John Redman Coxe, M. D., Richard Harlan, M. D., J. Pancoast, M. D., William P. C. Barton, M. D., E. F. Rivinus, M. D., Samuel G. Morgan, M. D. I concur in the above sentiments, concerning the collection of Mummies in the Philadelphia Arcade, and consider them highly deserving the attention of the curious. W. E. Horner, M. D. While Mr. Chandler was in Philadelphia, he used every exertion to find some one who could give him the translation of his papyrus, but could not, satisfactorily, though from some few men of the first eminence, he obtained in a small degree, the translation of a few characters. Here he was referred to bro. Smith. From Philadelphia he visited Harrisburgh, and other places east of the mountains, and was frequently referred to bro. Smith for a translation of his Egyptian Relic. It would be beyond my purpose to follow this gentleman in his different circuits to the time he visited this place the last of June, or first of July, at which time he presented bro. Smith with his papyrus. Till then neither myself nor brother Smith knew of such relics being in America.

55

Mr. Chandler was told that his writings could be deciphered, and very politely gave me a privilege of copying some four or five different sentences or separate pieces, stating, at the same time, that unless he found some one who could give him a translation soon, he would carry them to London. I am a little in advance of my narration; The morning Mr. Chandler first presented his papyrus to bro.-Smith, he was shown, by the latter, a number of characters like those upon the writings of Mr. C. which were previously copied from the plates, containing the history of the Nephites, or book of Mormon. Being solicited by Mr. Chandler to give an opinion concerning his antiquities, or translation of some of the characters, bro. S. gave him the interpretation of some few for his satisfaction. For your gratification I will here annex a certificate which I hold, from under the hand of Mr. Chandler, unsolicited, however, by any person in this place, which will show how far he believed bro. Smith able to unfold from these long obscured rolls the wonders contained therein: "Kirtland, July 6th, 1835." "This is to make known to all who may be desirous, concerning the knowledge of Mr. Joseph Smith, jr. in deciphering the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic characters, in

56

my possession, which I have, in many eminent cities, shown to the most learned: And, from the information that I could even learn, or meet with, I find that of Mr. Joseph Smith, jr. to correspond in the most minute matters." (signed) "Michael H. Chandler." "Travelling [Traveling] with, and proprietor of Egyptian Mummies." The foregoing is verbatim as given by Mr. C. excepting the addition of punctuation, and speaks sufficiently plain without requiring comment from me. It was given previous to the purchase of the antiquities, by any person here. The language in which this record is written is very comprehensive, and many of the hieroglyphics exceedingly striking. The evidence is apparent upon the face, that they were written by persons acquainted with the history of the creation, the fall of man, and more or less of the correct ideas of notions of the Deity. The representation of the godhead-three, yet in one, is curiously drawn to give simply, though impressively, the writers views of that exalted personage. The serpent, represented as walking, or formed in a manner to be able to walk, standing in front of, and near a female figure, is to me, one of the greatest representations I have ever seen upon paper, or a writing substance; and must go so far towards convincing the rational mind of the correctness and divine authority of the holy scriptures, and especially that part which has ever been assailed by the infidel community, as being a fiction, as to carry away, with one might sweep, the whole atheistical fabric, without leaving a vestige sufficient for a foundation stone. Enoch's Pillar, as mentioned by Josephus, is upon the same roll.
57

True, our present version of the bible does not mention this fact, though it speaks of the righteousness of Abel and the holiness of Enoch, one slain because his offering was accepted of the Lord, and the other taken to the regions of everlasting day without being confined to the narrow limits of the tomb, or tasting death; but Josephus says that the descendants of Seth were virtuous, and possessed a great knowledge of the heavenly bodies, and, that, in consequence of the prophecy of Adam, that the world should be destroyed once by water and again by fire, Enoch wrote a history or an account of the same, and put into two pillars one of brick and the other of stone; and that the same were in being at his (Josephus') day. The inner end of the same roll, (Joseph's record,) presents a representation of the judgment: At one view you behold the Savior seated upon his throne, crowned, and holding the sceptres [scepters] of righteousness and power, before whom also, are assembled the twelve tribes of Israel, the nations, languages and tongues of the earth, the kingdoms of the world over which satan is represented as reigning. Michael the archangel, holding the key of the bottomless pit, and at the same time the devil as being chained and shut up in the bottomless pit. But upon this last scene, I am able only to give you a shadow, to the real picture. I am certain it cannot be viewed without filling the mind with awe, unless the mind is far estranged from God: and I sincerely hope, that mine may never go so far estray [astray], nor wander from those rational principles of the doctrine of our Savior, so much, as to become darkened in the least, and thereby fail to have that, to us, the greatest of all days, and the most sublime of

58

all transactions, so impressively fixed upon the heart, that I become not like the beast, not knowing wither I am going, nor what shall be my final end! I might continue my communication to a great length upon the different figures and characters represented upon the two rolls, but I have no doubt my subject has already become sufficiently prolix for your patience: I will therefore soon cease for the present.-When the translation of these valuable documents will be completed, I am unable to say; neither can I give you a probable idea how large volumes they will make; but judging from their size, and the comprehendsiveness of the language, one might reasonable expect to see a sufficient to develop much upon the mighty acts of the ancient men of God, and of his dealing with the children of men when they saw him face to face. Be there little or much, it must be an inestimable acquisition to our present scriptures, fulfilling, in a small degree, the word of the prophet: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. P. S. You will have understood from the foregoing, that eleven Mummies were taken from the catacomb, at the time of which I have been speaking, and nothing definite having been said as to their disposal, I may, with propriety add a few words. Seven of the said eleven were purchased by gentlemen for private museums, previous to Mr. Chandler's visit to this place, with a small quantity of papyrus, similar, (as he says,) to the astronomical representation, contained with the present two rolls, of which I previously spoke, and the remaining four by gentlemen resident here.
59

Though the Mummies themselves are a curiosity, and an astonishment, well calculated to arouse the mind to a reflection of past ages, when men strove, as at this day, to immortalize their names, though in another manner, yet I do not consider them of much value compared with those records which were deposited with them. If Providence permits, I will, ere long, write you again upon the propriety of looking for additions to our present scriptures, according to their own literal reading. Believe me to be, sir, sincerely and truly, your brother in the bonds of the new and everlasting covenant.

APPENDIX B
AVRAHAM SPEAKS TO THE LATTERDAY PRIESTS

Avraham relays a prophetic message of warning to his posterity living in the latter days who hold the Priesthood of the Most High Elohim. The central theme of the writings of Avraham, contained within Sefer Avraham, offers a warning to latter day believers to beware of false priests of Babylon of Chaldea and to come out of the house of idolatry of sun worship before they are destroyed. Avraham warns his posterity that in his days, it was like the days of Noah. Men would not listen to wise counsel and were being judged with famine and natural disasters for their wickedness and this reminds us that in the latter day, it would be similar. Brigham Young Warns Saints of Babylonian Worship Brigham Young once prophesied that the leaders of the church would lead the church to the gates of hell, until one mighty and strong would come and set the church back into order. Brigham Young on several occasions, spoke about the Good Ship Zion, its course, captain and destination. Following are excerpts from two such occasions. Many onboard are there only for a pleasure trip; some strictly for business. Some few are there because they love

61

God and His truth, and the Ship is taking them to the Port. Some look at the Captain and say. wherever you sail, that is where Ill go. Others dont even say that much. They walk on the deck, BASK IN THE SUN and go in a certain direction simply because the planks under their feet pull them in that direction. Some few say the compass gives me a reading, I see that the Captain is heading in the correct bearing, therefore he is taking me to my destination. Brigham Young continues, But as sometimes happens, a storm blows up, and the Good Ship is mightily buffeted. Many are the course corrections, many are the listings to the port and then to starboard, but in it all the compass that the some few possess confirms the course of the captain. He is still heading for Port. Most below deck hardly are aware of the storm. To them business goes on as usual, sometimes increasing the sales of sea sick pills, or in money made by the ships porters because of food not eaten by the passengers during the troublous times, sometimes even a depression of sales in the souvenir shop occurs. But the dances go on and the drinking of the worlds liquids hardly falter. Then comes a stress that is felt by all, the many and the few. All aboard are buffeted, all least temporarily to port, then back to starboard, then the buffetings appear to ease. Out on deck the storm has passed, the skies seem clear as before and the ship is still moving onward. On deck and below all officers and passengers continue on their appointed tasks with the precision begotten by years of disciplined practice. But as the few check their compass,
62

they find that during the last storm, there indeed has been a pronounced change, the course is no longer directed to the Port. There has been a change, yet all else seems the same. Seems normal. The Captain is not at the helm, as before, yet the new Captain at the helm is one of the first mates of the old Captain always trusted and respected before and yet the new course persists! When others are consulted, the few are assured that the skies are clear, there is health and wealth and success on every hand, and that daily the number of passengers taken on by the Ship increases as they desire to go wherever the ship is heading. Also that the first mate, one in whom the previous Captain had confidence is at the helm and they are not in any position to question him. Yet the course persists! The Port has certainly not moved. The magnetic lines are yet oriented n the same direction and the compass accurately, as it always has, indicates the true direction. Yet the course persists! The few are certainly not in an enviable position. If they say much they shall be cast overboard by the strong armed porters to be left adrift as the ship is powered on its way with no one on board able to assist or succor them lest they also find themselves expelled. If they say nothing and with the shared confidence of their fellow passengers continue aboard, each will find themselves further from the Port, and if persisted long enough the moment of action will long have passed. The Ships destination will be their destination. It is hard to forget that those aboard the Ship Old Testament Congregation trusted in its various Captains, and arrived at its destination. But its destination was and still is the Telestial Kingdom, a Noble Kingdom indeed and
63

is certainly a worthy Port to put into, but still a severe disappointment for one on whose ticket was originally stamped THE HOLY CITY OF ZION, a beautiful Port situated hard by The Celestial City of God. If, when YOU make an anchor, you find that your ship making its regular call at Port is docked at the Port of Babylon, and you feel it wasnt your fault, you wanted to go to Zion, and it is the Captains fault and therefore he ought to bear the blame. Know most assuredly that it IS his fault, he will bear the blame, but you will still be aground in Babylon! (Sept 24, 1890). Brigham Young When Brigham Young speaks of the Old Testament Congregation as a picture of the Telestial Kingdom, he is speaking of the law given at Sinai on Yom Kippur, the second time that was without the Higher Law. See Exodus 34 and Deut 10 of the Joseph Smith Translation. He is not speaking of the renewed covenant that Yahushua the Messiah made when He came, as He renewed the eternal Torah with the Higher Priesthood. After the death of the last emissary in the first century, the Gentiles Hellenized the true eternal Torah faith and weaved in sun worship that originated in Babylon and also excluded baptism for the dead. Brigham Young continues: Of those who are cast overboard, many flounder and are eaten by the patriarchal sharks that infest the waters devouring whatever comes their way. Like BEES around a frightened victim, they seem to sense the order of those that hate the Good Ship and its present crew. There are those who are cast overboard who
64

are fortunate enough not to attract the sharks and who, wary of one false guide, can no longer trust their fate to any man, even though he be Gods servant. Soon their legs and arms fail for carrying their own weight and those around them and as life departs from those severed from the true vine, they quietly settle down into a cold and lonely and independent grave. This is similar to the vision of the large and spacious building and those who leave it to hold onto the rod of iron, the rod of iron being the commandments. Those in the large and spacious building do mock those who leave Babylon and some who leave, get discouraged and lose faith. See [1 Nephi 8]. Brigham Young continues, Some few of those cast out of the Ship, find their compass still functions for they have not even as yet violated the rules of the Ship nor let the worlds water jam its functions, and they can yet paddle the best they can on toward The Port, with Gods help avoiding the sharks and the lone swimmers who floundering try to grab others as they are going down. And, as they paddle on, a quiet voice from over their shoulder says You seem to be holding the same bearing as I, that familiar voice of the old Captain. His present Dingy boat is small and unattractive, it seems crowded and presents many hardships and challenges, and even the Captain bears the wounds of a previous struggle (especially on his hands and feet) but it is a haven where one can become dried from the worlds waters, where the Captains voice can be constantly heard, and where the course set on your compass (when you first set to sea at the
65

age of eight) is the course he constantly pursues. You will soon arrive at The Port, even the Celestial City of God, the Holy City of Zion, to be received by those with outstretched hand. The truth is that only a few will make it to the New Jerusalem, as only a few will THINK FOR THEMSELVES: Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, p. 183-184, Brigham Young, February 18, 1855. God will preserve a portion of the meek and humble of this people to bear off the Kingdom to the inhabitants of the earth, and will defend His Priesthood; for it is the last time, the last gathering time. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, p. 145, Heber C. Kimball, October 6, 1865 To be a Saint is an individual work, and it is out of the power of God, angels, or men to make a Saint of a man who is determined to be a sinnerBut the day will come when the Lord will choose a people OUT OF THIS PEOPLE, upon whom he will bestow his choicest blessings. Heber C. Kimball Deseret News, Nov. 9, 1865 Millennial Star: Vol. 42:584, 1880 Before the great day of the Lord shall come, and the day of righteousness and peace dawn upon this fair creation, two
66

potent cleansing processes shall be in active operation. The first of these is the preparation of a choice people, purified by an application of their lives as individuals and a community, of the principles of the Gospel of peace. Such a body will EVOLVE FROM THOSE CALLED LATTER DAY SAINTS, Out of this communitywill emanate the nucleus or foundation from which will spring the righteous Millennial population of our globe. Daniel H. Wells, Deseret News, Nov. 10, 1876 Only a FEW will be courageous enough to say it is time to leave Babylon: A people will come forth FROM AMONG US, who will be zealous of good works, willing to do the bidding of the Lord, who will be taught in His ways and who will walk in His paths. Daniel H. Wells, Deseret News, Dec. 9, 1882 If we as a people do not hold ourselves on the altar ready to be used, He will pass on and get somebody else; because He will get a people to do it. I do not mean to say that He will pass on and leave this people; no, there WILL COME UP FROM THE MIDST OF THIS PEOPLE that people which has been talked about so much. Orson F. Whitney, Deseret Weekly, Aug. 11, 1889

67

Many of this people are perhaps preparing themselves, by following after the world in its mad race . . . but I KNOW THAT THERE IS A PEOPLE, IN THE HEARTS CORE OF THIS PEOPLE, that will arise in their majesty in a day that is near at hand and push spiritual things to the front, a people who will stand up for God, fearing not man nor what man can do Joseph and President Romney Joseph Smith in TPJS at top of pg. 325 & Documentary History of the Church, Vol. 6, pp. 50-52. For those who knew better, but did not leave the practice of idolatry, they are later filled with regret: The DISAPPOINTMENT of hopes and expectations at the resurrection would be INDESCRIBABLY DREADFUL. Elder Marion G. Romney, Improvement Era, #52, Dec. 1949, p. 754, on the preceding statement. We might take a lesson from an account given by the Prophet of a vision of the resurrection in which he records that one of the saddest things he had ever witnessed was the sorrow of the members of the Church who came forth to a resurrection below that had taken for granted they would receive. 2 Nephi 28 and Mormon 8 describe the state of the church of YHWH in the latter days. In both of these chapters, the
68

following statements clearly say that only a FEW are on the right path: there are none SAVE A FEW ONLY who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts [Mormon 8:35] and THEY HAVE ALL GONE ASTRAY SAVE IT BE A FEW, who are the humble followers of Messiah; nevertheless they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men. O the wise, and the learned, and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts and all those who preach false doctrines, and pervert the right way of the Lord, wo, wo, wo be unto them, saith YHWH Elohim Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell! [2 Nephi 28:15-16]. These admonitions of Brigham Young, other leaders of the church and the witness of the scriptures in the Book of Mormon alone, should cause every believer great concern, and prompt prayer about what one needs to do to be among the few elect, rather than the many who are on the broad path to destruction. A Luciferian doctrine is to worship Elohim along with other gods and this is what the Chaldeans were doing in Avrahams day and this is also what Ephraim is doing in the latter days and what Avraham is concerned about concerning his posterity. The whore assembly did remove the eternal salvation gospel wherein those in prison may be released by the proxy ordinance of baptism for the dead. Avraham speaks to his posterity in the last days and warns them that the priesthood can not be held by the unrighteous, as he relates the story of his father Terah and grandfather
69

Abram, who forefeited their priesthood and were later destroyed due to their idolatry of sun worship connected to the worship of the ancient Chaldeans whose capitol was Babylon. The Book of Mormon warns us to come out of Babylon: And then shall a cry go forth: Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, Touch not that which is unclean; Go you out of the midst of her; 3 Nephi 20:41 Who is Babylon? Babylon is the Whore [Rev. 17 & 18] There are only two assemblies: The assembly of the Lamb and the Whore. there are save two churches only; The one is the church of the Lamb of God; And the other is the church of the devil Wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the Church Of the Lamb of God belongeth to the great Church, which is the mother of abominations; And she is the whore of all the earth. 1 Nephi 14:10 The assembly of the Lamb is the same assembly as the ancient first century disciples and the whore was later created by the Gentiles:

70

proceeded forth from the mouth of a Jew; And when it proceeded forth from the mouth of a Jew It contained the fullness of the gospel of the Lord 1 Nephi 13:24 these things go forth from the Jews in PURITY unto the gentiles 1 Nephi 13:25 AFTER they go forthfrom the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable churchthey have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious 1 Nephi 13:26 The restored sacred oracles of the Jews can not be performed in a way to consecrate oneself to other gods. When believers are steeped in the idolatrous practices of the Chaldeans, the result is mixed worship because one can not serve two masters. King Solomon strayed from the truth and his Temple became an idolatrous Temple, due to following the sin of his wives from foreign nations. Avraham warns latter day believers to read the Book of Enoch, as he was knowledgeable about the calendar and knew the correct timing to keep the holy Sabbaths. He encourages those who read his testimony in the latter days to also read the Book of Enoch and know these things for themselves.

Joseph Smith wrote: there are a great many wise men and women in our midst. Too wise to be taught and they must die in their ignorance and in the resurrection they will find their mistake. The judgment upon Babylon is elaborated upon in the Book of Mormon at 2 Nephi 23:1-24:32 and they are the very words of Isaiah the prophet. It is no wonder that our Savior instructed us to study the words of Isaiah. Isaiah is the prophet, pointed to our Redeemer coming in the flesh: Behold, I am he who was prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem my people, Behold I am Yahushua Messiah, I am the Father and the Son. In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters. Ether 3:14 Isaiah, the great prophet of YHWH, teaches clearly that YHWH alone is the Savior: For I am YHWH, your Elohim, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.it is I, YHWH: there is no savior but me Isaiah 43:3, 11/Hosea 13:4

72

We only have one redeemer: You shall know that I, YHWH am your Savior, your REDEEMER, the mighty one of Jacob. Isaiah 44:24/60:16 I am YHWH and there is no other; I am YHWH, there is none like me. Isaiah 46:9 Avraham was the firstborn with the priesthood rights to pass on that authority and his posterity is the assembly of the firstborn, with the keys of that authority on earth. Avraham warns those who hold the latter day priesthood, to not worship as the heathens of Chaldea, as their priesthood would be revoked and they would be cut off. Avraham knew of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, as the Book of Enoch 104:10-13 mentions that books would come forth in the latter days to the righteous that would be a cause of much joy and uprightness and wisdom. The sealed portion will come forth in a day of purity when the wicked are removed, as occurred in the days of Noah and Avraham. The Book of Mormon comes forth in two phases. One on the Day of Trumpets/Yom Teruah, which was on September 22, 1827 and the other in the future on Yom Kippur. The sealed portion is believed to be the contents in the ark of the covenant, the very dust collected from the original broken tablets of Moses at Sinai and accompanying oracles.

73

Before we are able to receive the greater things, we must be obedient to the commandments of Elohim. The Torah given at Yom Kippur that was a tutor to lead Israel into faith of Messiah. The Higher Law was the renewed covenant that Yahushua brought with all of the performances and ordinances of the Holy Order of Elohim, as those were made of eternal and infinite promises. The Lamanites need to awaken to the idolatry of Chaldean Babylon worship, and cease their mother earth worship, as this is the same Mother Mary, as the Roman Catholics worship, a type of Istar/Astarte worship of the sun and is idolatry. The Book of Mormon clearly describes Yahushua, our Messiah, as our Eternal Father due to the Spirit and Son, due to His flesh. Coming unto Messiah, is realizing who our redeemer is. The Gentiles need to become aware of the sun worship types within their current worship related to the sun god Nimrod and his associates, Ishtar. Many Gentiles will hear the truth of the Torah and leave the House of Idolatry and they will be scorned and mocked. Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind if shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith YHWH. And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith YHWH. First among those among you, saith YHWH, who have professed to

74

know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house saith YHWH. [D&C 112:24-26]. Isaiah speaks about how after the Gentiles bring forth the truth of Yahushua to the Lamanites, the Gentiles convert and become numbered with the covenant people of the House of Israel. In the latter days, the truths of the Eternal renewed covenant come forth as a light from the Lamanites, to call the children of Israel out of Babylon and into pure worship and this is the time that the scales of darkness begin to fall from their eyes. 2 Nephi 30:6 Avraham dwelled among the Chaldeans, wherein Babylon was the capitol. Their main form of worship was the sun god. After the death of the last emissary in the first century, the gentiles took on forms of sun worship from the East that have gradually moved West and have remained in our day. When we worship YHWH Elohim in the assembly and perform ordinances and performances, while being blinded to our own mixed worship, we are in effect serving two masters and in so doing, we are worshipping Lucifer and YHWH is a jealous Elohim. [see Moses 5:27-29] Yahushua taught us that a deceived assembly is good for nothing but the fire and that His children are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. The call today for latter day believers is to come out of mixed forms of worship, as were prevalent in the days of Avraham.

75

Our father Avraham desires for us to know that we have a heritage in truth and the right to the priesthood, must be operated in the truth of the renewed covenant of Torah, otherwise the error of hellenized worship, causes the wicked to forfeit their priesthood and be given to others. Isaiah is the major prophet to warn Israel in the latter day, as he says not to give heed to men and encourages us to think for ourselves. If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, then we are not to shut down our critical thinking skills and follow man without searching the scriptures. The teaching that the man can not lead a man astray is contrary to both scripture and the teachings of Joseph Smith, as we are not to trust in the arm of the flesh: Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Spirit. [2Nephi 28:31] Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of [Isaiah 2:22] Wo be unto the Gentiles, saith YHWH Elohim of Hosts! For notwithstanding, I shall lengthen out mine arm unto them from day to day, they will deny me; nevertheless, I will be merciful unto them, saith YHWH Elohim, IF they will repent and come unto me; for mine arm is lengthened

76

out all the day long, saith YHWH Elohim of hosts. [2Nephi 28:32] The weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones, that man should not counsel his fellow man, neither trust in the arm of the flesh. [D&C 1:19-20]. And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins. For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceivedverily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day. [D&C 45:56]. There is not any person belonging to the church who is exempt from this council of the church. And inasmuch as a President of the High Priesthood shall transgress, he shall be had in remembrance before the common council of the church, who shall be assisted be twelve counselors of the High Priesthood; And their decision upon his head shall be an end of controversy concerning him; Thus, none shall be exempted from the justice and the laws of God, that all things may be done in order and in solemnity before him, according to truth and righteousness. [D&C 107:81-84].

Joseph Smith, Millennial Star, Vol. 14, Number 38, pgs 593-595: We have heard men who hold the priesthood remark that they would do anything they were told to do by those who preside over them [even] if they knew it was wrong; but such obedience as this is worse than folly to us; it is slavery in the extreme, and the man who would thus willingly degrade himself, should not claim a rank among intelligent beings, until he turns from his folly. A man of God would despise the idea. Others, in the extreme exercise of their almighty authority have taught that such obedience was necessary, and that no matter what the saints were told to do by their presidents they should do it without any questions. When Elders of Israel will so far indulge in these extreme notions of obedience as to teach them to the people, it is generally because they have it in their hearts to do wrong themselves! Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Five 184243, p. 237-238: President Joseph Smith read the 14th chapter of Ezekiel said the Lord had declared by the Prophet, that the people should each one stand for HIMSELF, and depend ON NO MAN OR MEN in that state of corruption of the Jewish church that righteous persons could only deliver their OWN SOULS APPLIED TO THE PRESENT STATE OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS SAID IF THE PEOPLE DEPARTED FROM THE LORD, THEY MUST FALL THAT THEY WERE

DEPENDING ON THE PROPHET, HENCE WERE DARKENED IN THEIR MINDS, in consequence of neglecting the duties of devolving upon themselves, envious towards the innocent, while they afflict the virtuous with their shafts of envy. Brigham Young at Provo, Utah Bowery Conference in 1867 Brethren, this Church will be led onto the very brink of hell by the leaders of this people. Then God will raise the one mighty and strong spoken of in the 85th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants, to save and redeem this church. Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 331. But there has been great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting hemlock knots with a corn dodger for a wedge, and a pumpkin for a beetle. Even the Saints are slow to understand. The Prophet felt he had essentially failed in his efforts to raise the Saints up because of their collective unwillingness to hear and obey truth. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, p. 322, Brigham Young, July 6, 1862 The people generally would NOT have the revelations which the Lord delivered to Joseph Smith, unless he would give them a law of carnal commandments like that which he gave to the children of Israel, and how long was it before they were in conversation with the spirit world, BEING LED TO DESTRUCTION BY STRONG DELUSION
79

WHICH GOD SENT THEM, BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT RECEIVE THE TRUTH? And when they say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter; should not a people seek unto their God? They would NOT receive revelations from God, but as they were told, God suffered them to have revelations that they would believe, that they might believe lies and be damned. Moses tried to give the children of Israel the law of the Gospel, but they would not receive it. The Gospel was revealed in those days, as much as in the days of Christ and His Apostles. They had the Melchizedek Priesthood, and were entitled to all the promises and blessings then as in the days of the Apostles. Brigham Young clearly told the Saints that if they will NOT hear truth, then the Lord WILL send them a strong delusion to lead them to destruction. This is a little known and understood truth, but VERY important and powerful eternal principle. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 15, p. 361-362, Orson Pratt, March 9, 1873 This is plain preaching, and perhaps some of you will not like it. I can not help it, these are the things that present themselves before my mindI do not know but that it would be an utter impossibility to commence and carry out some principles pertaining to Zion right in the midst of this people. THEY HAVE STRAYED SO FAR that to get a people who would conform to heavenly laws it may be needful to lead some from the midst of this people and
80

commence anew somewhere in the regions round about in these mountains. Truly Orson Pratt saw the lazy lambs who would not think for themselves, who would need to be led by a remnant in the latter day who are worthy to hold the keys of authority. Duty to Obtain Personal Revelation: Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 100, Brigham Young, November 29, 1857: The First Presidency have right to a great influence over this people; and IF WE SHOULD GET OUT OF THE WAY AND LEAD THIS PEOPLE TO DESTRUCTION, WHAT A PITY IT WOULD BE! How can you know whether we lead you correctly or not? Can you know by any other power than that of the Holy Ghost? If we have uniformly exhorted the people to obtain this living witness each for themselves; then NO MAN on earth can lead them astray. The Apostle Paul did not want blind followers, but rather encouraged his audience to search the scriptures to see if what he taught was true. Brigham Young, Journal of Discourse, Vol. 4, p. 59: How often it has been taught that if you depend entirely upon the voice, judgment and sagacity of those appointed to lead you, and neglect to enjoy the spirit for YOURSELVES, how easily you may be led into error..

81

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9, p. 151, Brigham Young, January 12, 1862: What a pity it would be if we were led by ONE MAN to utter destruction! Are you afraid of this! I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by Him. I AM FEARFUL THEY SETTLE DOWN IN A STATE OF BLIND SELF SECURITY, TRUSTING THEIR ETERNAL DESTINY IN THE HANDS OF THEIR LEADERS WITH A RECKLESS CONFIDENCE THAT IN ITSELF WOULD THWART THE PURPOSES OF GOD IN THEIR SALVATION, AND WEAKEN THAT INFLUENCE THEY COULD GIVE TO THEIR LEADERS, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are in the right way. Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates or not. This has been my exhortation continually. George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, Vol. 1, p. 319 Do not brethren, put your trust in man though he be a Bishop, an Apostle or a President; if you do, they will fail you at some time or place; they will do wrong or seem to, and your support will be gone; but if we lean on God, He never will fail us. When men and women depend on God alone and trust in Him alone, their faith will not be shaken if the highest in the Church should step aside. They could still

see that He is just and true, that truth is lovely in His sight and the pure in heart are dear to Him. J. Golden Kimball, Conference Report, April 1904, p. 29 I feel a good deal, or at least I imagine I do, like a man does when held up by a burglar and he is looking into the muzzle of a six shooter. I would quietly and willingly hold my hands up, but during the time would think very profoundly of what I would do if given my liberty. We are in a similar position today, but all the men in the United States cannot prevent a man from thinking! There are not Apostles enough in the Church to prevent us from thinking, and they are not disposed to do so; but some people fancy because we have the Presidency and Apostles of the Church they will do the thinking for us! There are men and women so mentally LAZY that they hardly think for themselves. To think calls for effort, which makes some men tired and wearies their souls. Now, brethren and sisters, we are surrounded with such conditions that it requires not only thought, but the guidance of the Holy Spirit. LATTERDAY SAINTS, YOU MUST THINK FOR YOURSELVES. NO MAN OR WOMAN CAN REMAIN IN THIS CHURCH ON BORROWED LIGHT. I am a strong believer in the following statement made by my father in the House of the Lord in 1856 We think we are secure in the chambers of the everlasting hills, but the time will come when we will be SO MIXED UP THAT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO TELL THE FACE OF A SAINT FROM THE FACE OF AN ENEMY TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD. Then, brethren, look out for the great sieve, for there will be
83

a great sifting time, and many will fall; for I say unto you there is a test, a test, a TEST coming, and who will be able to stand? Ezra Taft Benson, Conference Report, October 1963, p. 16 Those of us who think ALL IS WELL IN ZION in spite of Book of Mormon warning, might ponder the words of Heber C. Kimball when he said, Yes, we think we are secure here in the chambers of these everlasting hillsbut I want to say to you, my brethren, the time is coming when we will be mixed up in these now peaceful valleys to that extent that it will be difficult to tell the face of a Saint from the face of an enemy against the people of God. Then is the time to look out for the great sieve, for there will be a great sifting time, and many will fall. For I say unto you, there is a test, a test, a TEST coming. Heber C. Kimball, 1856, quoted by J. Golden Kimball, Conference Report, October 1930, pp. 59-60. Seduction of the Members by BABYLON or the Pleasures of the World: And after they have fallen asleep, the great persecutor of the church, the apostate, the whore, even Babylon, that maketh all nations to drink of her cup, in whose hearts the enemy, even Satan, sitteth to reign, behold he soweth the tares; wherefore, the tares choke the wheat and drive the church into the wilderness. [D&C 86:3]

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, p. 38, Brigham Young, August 31, 1856: When Mormonism finds favor with the wicked in this land, it will have gone into the shade; but until the power of the Priesthood is gone, Mormonism will never become popular with the wicked. Mormonism is not one farthing better than it was in the days of Joseph. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 10, p. 273, Brigham Young, October 6, 1863: I am willing that we should be forgiving. I do not know that I have one single feeling against any man or woman upon earth; I do not love wickedness, and I mean to hate it in myself and in everybody else, and wherever I see it, from this time and henceforth and for ever. When we see the time that we can willingly strike hands and have full fellowship with those who despise the Kingdom of God, know ye then that the Priesthood of the Son of God is out of your possession. Let us be careful how we make friends with and fellowship with unrighteousness, lest the curse of God descends heavily upon us. Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 112 There never has been a day for ages and ages, not since the true church was destroyed after the days of the Apostles, that required the faith and the energy of godly men and godly women, and the skill, wisdom and power of the Almighty to be with them, so much as this people require it

85

at the present time. There never was that necessity; there never has been a time on the face of the earth, from the time that the church went to destruction, and the Priesthood was taken from the earth, that the powers of darkness and the powers of the earth and hell were so embittered, and enraged, ad incensed against God and Godliness on the earth, as they are at the present. And when the spirit of persecution, the spirit of hatred of wrath, and malice ceases in the world against this people, it will be the time that this people have apostatized and joined hands with the wicked, and never until then; which I pray may never come. Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 18, p. 262, October 8, 1876: If the Latter-day Saints do not desist from running after the things of this world, and begin to reform and do the work the Father has given them to do, they will be found wanting, & will be swept away and counted as unprofitable servants. Deseret News, 11th August 1889: Many of this people are perhaps preparing themselves, by following after the world in its mad race for wealth and pleasure, to go down with BABYLON when she crumbles and falls, but I know there is a people in the hearts core of this people, that will arise in their majesty in a day that is near at hand, and push spiritual things to the front; a people who will stand up for God, fearing not man nor what man can do, but believing as the Prophet Joseph Smith says, that

86

all things we suffer are for our best good, and that God will stand by us forever and ever. 1 Peter 4:17-18: Now the time must come that judgment must begin at the House of Elohim; and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of Elohim? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? D&C112:24-26: Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord. And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord; First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord. D&C 64:38-40: For it shall come to pass that the inhabitants of Zion shall judge all things pertaining to Zion. And liars and hypocrites shall be proven by them, and they who are not apostles and prophets shall be known. And even the bishop, who is a judge, and his counselors, if they are not faithful in their stewardships shall be condemned. YHWH has given us a right of free agency. His deliverance principle is that we have a right to select our own delusions and warns us that His Spirit will not strive with man always. The consequences for refusal to obey the promptings of the

87

Holy Spirit, is that we open ourselves to experience our hearts hardening, a blindedness to occur, and then we go into captivity, so that YHWH can deliver us. Paul has warned us that delusions originate due to men desiring to listen to what they want, and not what they need, so they have itching ears and want to hear only those things that they agree with. [2 Tim. 4:3-4]: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned unto fables. Paul refers to deluded people as being bewitchedthat ye should not obey the truth. [Gal 3:1]. Wherefore, the Lord commanded you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up. For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies; even that same liar who beguiled our first parents, year, even that same liar who hath caused man to commit murder from the beginning; who hath hardened the hearts of men

88

that they have murdered the prophets, and stoned them, and cast them out from the beginning. Ether 8:24-25 He also declared that some church members, having swerved, have turned aside unto vain jangling who give heed to fables. [I Tim 1:4,6]. In I Tim. 1:6 He also declared that others have erred concerning the truth having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. [2 Tim 3:5] He also states that some profess that they know God but in their words, they deny him. [Titus 1:16]. Paul says that those who would not receive truth, received instead STRONG DELUSION, that they should believe a lie, because they took pleasure in unrighteousness. [2 Thess. 2:8-12]. Woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. [Isaiah 6:5]. Nephi also had something to say about not wanting any more from YHWH: Woe be unto him that shall say: We have received the Word of Elohim, and WE NEED NO MORE of the Word of Elohim, for WE HAVE ENOUGH! For behold, thus saith YHWH Elohim: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a
89

little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear to my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto HIM THAT RECEIVETH, I WILL GIVE MORE; and from them that shall say, WE HAVE ENOUGH, FROM THEM SHALL BE TAKEN EVEN THAT WHICH THEY HAVE. [2 Nephi 28:29-30]. The condition of the people in Isaiahs day in the year of King Uzziahs death was gravely wicked. This is a message for our day. Isaiah is filled with repentance for the people and a live coal is placed upon his lips by a seraphim, telling him that his iniquity is taken away and that his sin is forgiven. Isaiah heard the voice of YHWH saying, Whom will I send, and who will go for us? Then Isaiah said, Here am I; send me. This is what Avraham did as well! YHWH then told Isaiah, Go and tell this people, hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart and convert, and be healed. Then Isaiah asked how long? And YHWH answered,
UNTIL THE CITIES BE WASTED WITHOUT INHABITANT AND THE HOUSES WITHOUT MAN, AND THE LAND BE UTTERLY DESTROYED. AND YHWH HAS REMOVED MEN FAR AWAY, AND THERE BE A GREAT FORSAKING IN THE MIDST OF THE LAND. [Isaiah 6:8-12].

90

The children of Israel qualify themselves for delusion when they choose to walk in their own way, attempting to redeem heathen practices into their worship of YHWH Elohim. YHWH delivers many things unto His people which they cannot understand, because they desired it. And because they desired it, YHWH hath done it, that they may stumble. [Jacob 4:14]. Avraham saw our day. He wrote to us and told us that he decided to be more righteous, as he desired greater things, so he left the idolatrous house of his fathers, to seek after those things and he found truth and protection in the commandments of YHWH. Avraham left his comfortable surroundings and family members to follow YHWH. The terrible troublous times are ahead of us. We must individually heed the call to come out of idolatry, except we partake in her terrible curses.
