In Parts 1-5, candidates are tested on their reading sil including their understanding of various kinds of texts and knowledge of the structure of English with a focus on vocabulary and grammar, while Parts 6 and 7 focus ‘on writing sk; Part 6 is always an email and part 7 is always a short story. Knowing how each paper is set up us help you to feel more prepared cn exam day There are seven parts to this paper. Parts 1-5 are Reading tasks. Parts 6 and 7 are Writing tasks. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES Read the instructions for each part of the paper carefully. Answer all the questions. Each question in Parts 1-5 carries one mark. In Parts 6 and 7, the questions carry a total of 15 marks each. Write your answers on the answer sheet. Use a pencil You must complete the answer sheet within the one-hour time limit TIP: Time You have one hour to complete the whole paper. Be careful with time! Make sure you don't spend too long on one part, and then find you don't have enough time to finish another part. You have to choose the correct meaning of each text from three possible answers (A, B or C). These six texts are very short, but you need to read them carefully. They will be short emails, text messages, signs or notices. TIP: Synonyms Synonyms are different words that have the same meaning. For example, the words: afraid, frightened and scared are all synonyms of each other because they all mean the same thing. Each person describes his or her own experience with this to There are seven questions. All of the questions are about things the three people wrote in their texts. Your three possible answers (A, B or C) will be the names of the three people. You have to choose which persons the correct answer to each question, TIP: Scanning In Part 2, you will use the reading skill of scanning. You use scanning when you need to quickly find a specific poi means one special detail among all the other details in the text. ‘When you are scanning, you are looking for that specific detail by reading the text very quickly. You dontt read every line, or even every word, you just scan the text (move your eyes quickly over the page) until you find the detail that you need ~ for example, a number, a date, a name, etc. Scanning is also called reading for specific information. a text. PREPARATION « READING AND WRITING + PART 2 TIPS * Try to work quickly, but carefully. Check how long it takes you to complete this task, and practise improving your time. * When you scan the text for the answer, remember, the questions and texts often use synonyms and paraphrasing - different language to say the same thing. © Don't write your answer the first time you see the words you are looking for. Tenses ‘Make sure the tense in the question matches the tense in your answer. For example, if the question is about something that happened in the past, check that your answer was definitely a past event. 4 Check your work in exercise 3. You choose your answers from three options (A,B or C). Begin by reading the text quickly to get an idea of the most important points. Next, read the five questions. Then go back and read the text more carefully. Choose your answers and remember that the questions are in the same order as the text. Try to leave enough time to go back and check your answers at the end, TIP: Skimming In Part 3, you will also practise the reading skill of skimming, This is when you are not interested in specific details, but you want to understand the gist of the text. Gistis the main point or meaning of a text without all the details. 1. Circle the correct options about the reading skills of skimming and scanning. {A You scana text when you need 1 the main gist / specific information, such as 2a number ora date, or some other detail that you want to find in the tex. This is something that you do quite 2 fast / slowly. You 3 read / don't read every word in the piece. Instead, your eyes move quickly over the whole text looking only for the specific item that you want to find. 4 You probably won't / You will probably get the main gist ofthe text because you are only interested inthe specific detail that you need. You 2 read / don't read ‘every word carefully; instead, you look quickly atthe title and the text to get an idea of What is about, You look at content words, such as nouns and adjectives. TIP: Types of questions You will be asked different kinds of questions in Part 3. A useful way to prepare for this partis to practise reading questions and making sure you understand what you are being asked, © Detail questions often start with phrases like: How many. ? / How long .? / When did ..? / Who helped...? You need to find the specific detail in the text - for example, a number, date or a name. © Main idea questions often start with Why... ?or What ..?. You need to find more information than a name or number, for example: Why did Ava have to move toa new school? Main idea questions include opinion and attitude questions. Opinion and attitude means how a person thinks or feels about something. For example, What does Ava think of her new school? or How does Ava feel about her new teacher? Understanding the questions will also help you to find the information you need more quickly. 16 PREPARATION + READING AND WRITING » PART 3 2 Read the questions and choose the type of information they are asking for. 1 How did Chris feel after the concert? A detail B_ opinion TIP: Possible answers ‘Once you have read and understood the questions, read the text to find the answers. Remember: There may be some information from the text in all of the options, but only one answers the question correctly. You may find ‘paraphrased’ language in the text and the three possible answers. 3. Working with synonyms and paraphrased language isa very good way to prepare for Part 3. This part also has two phases, and it lasts for five or six minutes. In Phase 1, the interlocutor will show you and your partner a set of five pictures. They will all be about the same topic, for example, different hobbies or places. The interlocutor will say what the topic is, and will ask if you like these things.
