Budgets squeezing schools

Chloe Morrison reports that Northwest
Georgia school systems have been squeezing
their budgets to deal with a state funding
shortfall, so far without major cuts to person-
nel or popular programs. Continued tightening
is expected though, and one of the programs
listed as potentially at stake is the gradua-

praised for its success.

buffers at Army base
BIG WHEEL?
Fort Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division trains daily to com-
bat terrorism and other threats around the world. But one
threat looms as close as the boundaries of the largest Army
base east of the Mississippi River: population growth and the
development it brings.
The development turning forest and field around Fort
Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield into more houses and busi-
nesses increases the potential for conflict over noise, smoke,
lights and even radio signal interference with weapons sys-
tems. These “encroachments” can undermine operations at
the 280,000-acre post that stretches from Glennville to Savan-
nah. Wildlife and ecological functions also suffer as habitat
is lost, management options such as prescribed burning are
limited and training areas are moved to avoid problems on
the perimeter.
“The more we can keep the areas around installations

JV upholds Brantley’s honor against Pierce

Herons drub
Bears 40-26
The JV Herons used a balanced at-
tack to outlast the Pierce County Bears
last Thursday at Heron Field.
Ryan Cox led the charge with
195 yards rushing. He had a kick-off
return, a 99-yard run for a TD — the
longest in JV history — and a 45-yard
TD run.
Devon Blankenship added 1 rush-
ing TD and 2 TD’s by air and ended
up with 200 yards passing. Jamison
Williams added a 2 point conversion for
the offense. EJ Thomas led the defense
with 2 interceptions and added an of-
fensive score of his own.
Dillon Hickox also had an intercep-
tion.
Head coach Clent Cannon notched
his first JV win.
The JV Herons travel to Kingsland QB Devon Blankenship uncorks a long pass during the BCHS junior varsity victory
this Thursday to face Camden County over Pierce County, above, and the defense swarms to a Pierce runner, top.
