CHOOSING YOUR LAMPSHADE

CHOOSE THE STYLE AND FITTING

First consider the shape and size of the shade you require and how you intend to use it. For example, is it for a ceiling pendant or a table, floor or wall light?

ADVICE ON LAmpS
The original GLS type lamps are being phased out to make way for more energy efficient lamps like the compact fluorescent (CFL), and LEDs amongst others. We strongly suggest that you use CFL lamps that are coded warm white, have a colour temperature value of 2800k (sometimes coded 827), with our lampshades. These lamps give a light output that is closest to the original GLS tungsten filament lamp that we have become used to. Make sure you choose the appropriate strength of light output by using the table below as a guide: it shows which CFL lamp gives the same light output as the corresponding GLS style lamp. GLS Style Lamp 25 watt 40 watt 60 watt 75 watt 100 watt 150 watt CFL Style Lamp 5 watt 8-9 watt 13-15 watt 18 watt 21 watt 30 watt You also need to be sure that your chosen lamp will fit within the lampshade itself and does not protrude above or below the shade. Please check before you buy. Please remember that CFL lamps take a little time to warm up and deliver their maximum light output. They are designed to last between 8 and 15 times as long as the original GLS filament lamps. As a rule, over the lifetime of a CFL lamp, you should make considerable cash savings. Finally please dispose of your CFL lamps at a recognised recycling centre local to you. It really will make a difference.

We are happy to offer a service to use customers own material to make lampshades. All COM orders need to be checked for compatibility with our production process and we ask that a small piece of the proposed fabric is sent to us before we confirm that production is possible. We also make it clear that the COM fabric is sent entirely at the customers own risk and we are not able to take responsibility for lost or damaged material. Please use the table below to work out how much fabric is required to make your lampshade. This is a guide only and if you have any concerns please ask our staff for confirmation. Please allow extra fabric for a diffuser if applicable.

This table does not take into account pattern repeat requests*, or square and rectangular shades, and is based on a standard fabric width of 1200mm minimum. Any remaining fabric will be returned to you with your order.
*Regrettably it is not always possible to design the presentation of the lampshade to match the pattern repeat on the material although we will try. Please speak to our sales staff who will do everything possible to accommodate all requests, however this is always done without guarantee. Heathfield & Co are unable to accept any responsibility for the replacement cost of any COM fabric for any reason. This will not affect your statutory rights.

HINTS & TIPS

Coloured and contrasting linings add dramatic effect and a hint of sophistication to the design scheme

Silver capped bulbs reduce the glare from lampshades where the bulb is visible - this works for pendants too

Gold linings in a lampshade help to create a warm and cosy ambience

Dark and opaque lampshades throw light out through the top and bottom of the shade only for a stunning visual effect

If you propose to use a dimmer with your lampshade you need to check that the bulb is dimmable AND that the dimmer that you have in mind is compatible with the bulb.
