Die vorliegende Ausgabe der A-Dur Sonate ist die erste der geplanten Serie auf IMSLP. Das
Autograph ist sehr sauber geschrieben und enthält kaum Korrekturen. Die Übertragung folgt
dem Original so genau wie möglich. Eine kleine Zahl offensichtlich vergessener Vorzeichen
wurde ergänzt (in Klammer). Ein offensichtlicher rhythmischer Fehler wurde
strillschweigend korrigiert. Ergänzt wurden weiter einige Bindebögen (gestrichelt) und
dynamische Zeichen (Kleindruck), die in der Erstausgabe fehlen, die aber zweifellos
notwendig sind. Es gibt Stellen, wo die dynamischen Markierungen im Autograph mehr-
deutig oder in sich selbst widersprüchlich sind. Diese sind hier so wiedergegeben, wie sie im
Original erscheinen. Sie müssen von den Spielern interpretiert werden. Das Original enthält
auch Probenmarken, aber keine vollständige Sequenz. Wir erlaubten uns, die Lücken zu
füllen (kursiv).
Aufführungszeit: ca. 28 min. (Allegro 10 min., Andante cantabile 7.5 min., Scherzo 3.5 min.,
Allegro 6 min.).

Emilie Mayer began her career as a composer mostly with string quartets and symphonies.
Approximately in 1860 she abandoned those genres and began to concentrate on chamber
music with piano (besides some works for piano and some songs). Towards the end of her
life she composed a series of sonatas for violoncello and piano whose autographs were
recently posted to IMSLP. These sonatas represent thus her “late” style and a comparison
with the (early) string quartets might be interesting.
The present edition of the sonata in D-Major is the first of a series envisioned for IMSLP..
The autograph is clearly written and almost free of corrections. The transcription follows the
autograph as closely as possible. A small number of obviously forgotten accidentals was
added (in brackets) An obvious rhythmic error was corrected2. Some dynamic markings and
slurs which are missing where they obviously should be from the were also added (small
print / dashed lines). In some passages the dynamic markings in the source are ambiguous or
inconsistent. These markings were reproduced as they are in the source with no attempt to
clarify them. People who play the piece will have to decide on how to interpret those
passages. The source also features rehearsal marks though not a complete sequence. The
subscriber took the liberty to complete the sequence (italic).
