ThenewlyreleasedpovertydatafromtheU.S.CensusBureausCurrentPopulationSurveyshineaspotlighton
howtheGreatRecessionhasfurthererodedeconomicstabilityformillionsoffamilies.Atotalnumberof43.6
millionpeoplewereinpovertyin2009morepeopleexperiencedpovertythanatanyothertimesince
povertyhasbeenmeasured.
TheSocialIMPACTResearchCenterwillcontinuetoanalyzethedataandisavailableforcustomizeddata
requests,fortrendanalyses,andforprovidingcontextforthenewpovertynumbers.

Since1980thepercentageofchildrenlivinginextreme
poverty,childrenlivinginfamilieswithincomebelow50
percentoftheirpovertythreshold(lessthan$10,977in2009
forafamilyoffour),increasedfrom6.9%to9.3%.
Afterfallingformanyyears,reachingalowof33.0%in2000,
thepovertyrateforfemaleheadedhouseholdswithchildren
hasincreased,reaching38.5%in2009.
