NAME: CLASS:.. DATE:.. PRACTICAL No.:. To determine the acceleration of a trolley by using the ticker tape method.

This is a group experiment or even a teacher demonstration. AIMS: 1. 2.

3. 4.

To interpret dots on ticker tapes and thus establish the velocity at certain positions on a ticker tape. To establish the acceleration from the velocities derived on the ticker tape. To draw a graph to illustrate this relationship between velocity v and time t for a given tape. To establish how to derive the acceleration of the trolley from the v/t graph.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1.
2.

3. 4.
5. 6.

Pay careful attention during the pre-prac. discussion and take notes so that you are sure about what you have to do when you carry out the investigation. Decide on and write up your action plan to establish the relationship between v and t. Carry out the investigation, making sure that you take careful note to compensate for friction before starting the prac. Analyse the tape(s) and establish the velocity for at least 3 different points on the tape. Establish the mathematical relationship between v and t and thus determine a for the tape. Draw a graph to illustrate the relationship between v and t. How is the acceleration obtained from this v/t graph?

PROCEDURE: 1. 2. 3.
4. 5. 6.

Describe your action plan, including a statement of the problem, the apparatus you will use and the method you will follow. Carry out your investigation, taking the readings and measurements. State clearly how the force has been kept constant and how you have compensated for frictional forces. Record your results in suitable tables, indicating how you have calculated the velocities for the tape. Having established three velocities for each tape, deduce the relationship between v and t. Draw a graph to illustrate the relationship between v and t. Clearly indicate how the acceleration a is determined from the graph.

ASSESSMENT: Consult the rubrics on the next page to see how your work will be assessed. Ensure you have carried out all the requirements. The total mark for this investigation is indicated on the rubric assessment sheet.

Sample experimental results:

The ticker tape below gives an example of what a sample tape would look like. The table below indicates the actual values (distances in mm) obtained from the ticker tape. Determine three different velocities for three different positions on the tape. Establish the relationship between velocity v, time t and thus a. Draw a graph to illustrate these relationships. The frequency of the ticker timer was 50 Hz. Direction of tape: to the left
