Final grade assignments will be curved, based on the total cumulative points earned during the semester. The class average will serve as the reference for grade C. Course Content by Topics 1. Index notation, vector calculus and tensor. 2. Conservation laws, constitutive equations, and Navier-Stokes equations 3. Potential flow theory: Source, sink, conformal transformation, Joukowski transformation, circulation, Schwarz-Christoffel transformation 4. Shear Flows: wake, jet, and mixing layer 5. Vortex dynamics: Helmholtzs deomposition, complex-Lamellar decomposition, helical wave decomposition, and polarized vorticity dynamics.

6. Rotating Flows: Ekman layer, Rossby wave, Taylor-Proudman theorem, Reyleight-Taylor instability 7. Flow Instability: Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, convective and absolute instability, global instability, normal-mode analysis, Rayleigh and Fjortofts theorem, Howard semicircle theorem, Equires equivalence theorem, linear instability and Orr-Sommerfeld equation, and Taylor-Gortler instability. 8. Laminar-turbulent transition: hair-pin vortex, intermittency, turbulent spot and burst. 9. Asymptotic expansion and perturbation in fluid flows: Gauge functions, regular perturbation, singular perturbation, matched asymptotic expansions. CLASS POLICIES: First, Turn off you cell phones! 1. Students must have Internet access to www.uno.edu and Moodle. All communications will be done through Moodle. Students are responsible for all e-mail communications from the instructor to their UNO e-mail drop box. 2. If the instructor does not show up for class in fifteen minutes, have one student call or visit the instructor's office. If the instructor can not be reached and no advance arrangements have been made, you are authorized to leave. 3. Late papers are given half credit if they are received before grading begins. After grading begins, no papers will be accepted. 4. Those who miss the class without "excusable" reasons are responsible for the consequences themselves. A student who incurs five unexcused absences will be downgraded one letter grade in final semester grade. 5. You are encouraged to discuss homework with your peers but are prohibited from copying other people's work. If discovered, both the copied and the original work will be assigned a score of zero. 6. Academic integrity is fundamental to the process of learning and evaluating academic performance. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following: cheating, plagiarism, tampering with academic records and examinations, falsifying identity, and being an accessory to acts of academic dishonesty. Refer to the UNO Judicial Code for further information. The Code is available online at http://www.studentaffairs.uno.edu/ODS/ods_pdfs/judicial_code_academicdis.pdf. 7. The approximate date for each test is listed below. The exact date will be announced a week earlier before each test. The final exam date can't be changed.
