SEPTEMBER 2011 KINGSTONCHAMBER.ON.CA

EXECUTIVE VIEWPOINT
BY: MEGAN COUGHLIN, PRESIDENT

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce has an outlook that encourages networking, but at its heart, the Chamber is the prime advocate for a healthy economic environment. Being Kingstons Voice of Business should be exemplified through hard work, measurable goals and advocacy that bring value to our members while engaging the business community as a whole. Clearly, we are in business for business. And when we are confronted with an issue or question, we dont take it lightly. Well start off September with getting you informed politically. Our September 7th Meet the Local Candidates Breakfast, will showcase who is running and why in the upcoming provincial election. We will also be attending the Canadian Chambers Annual General Meeting to ensure the resolutions to help commerce expand and businesses grow. The Chambers fall program has lots of ways to engage you and your colleagues the September 22nd MegaMixer, business-oriented workshops and our Board elections to help bring in the new dynamic business people that will drive our organization forward. The genesis of this proactive approach is for the Chamber to help foster the growth of your company and your clients through our high-value business processes, an expanded partnership role and, ultimately, to help you leverage our services into a real competitive advantage. In a highly competitive local, regional, national and global business climate, it is essential that the Chamber becomes even more creative in finding ways to help you service your clients to improve their loyalty and repeat business. There is a basic premise at work in almost all business relationships. That is, if two people want to do business together they wont let any details get in the way. If two people dont want to do business together any detail will get in the way. We want to foster the right environment and we are on track to do so.

Competition Bureau sues to shut down business directory scam The Competition Bureau recently announced that it has taken action against five companies and three individuals to ban a deceptive marketing scheme targeting businesses across Canada. The Bureau is seeking an injunction to put an immediate end to the deceptive marketing representations, freeze corporate assets for future restitution to victims and stop the deceptive conduct. The Bureaus action comes after an international investigation uncovered a business directory scheme targeting Canadian and international businesses, in violation of the false or misleading and deceptive practices provisions of the Competition Act. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is undertaking a simultaneous court action against U.S. targets involved in this case. The investigation found that the individuals and companies sent faxed forms to targets displaying symbols that closely resemble the well-known trademark of the Yellow Pages Group (YPG), thus deceiving businesses into believing the forms came from the YPG. For additional information regarding the Bureaus investigation, see http://bit.ly/n8TSQ0

Policy updates from the Canadian Chamber Online Survey

Effective Commercialization of Innovations in Canada
Developed by the Chamber, in collaboration with several other major industry associations, federal and provincial agencies and not-for-profit organizations involved in business acceleration, this survey is to acquire a meaningful understanding of what works and what does not for Canadian companies in matters of commercialization. More information about this program can be found at: http://www.cata.ca/commercialization/ The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to provide critical information that will help Canadian executives in industry as well as in government to benchmark their organizations success in the commercialization of innovation and to develop better practices and support programs for ensuring competitiveness on the global scale. The survey is available in both official languages at http://bit.ly/oyJoyk In recognition of participation, participants will be provided with a summary of the survey results and will receive an invitation to participate in a webinar on proposals for achieving a more effective commercialization environment in Canada.

From the Ontario Chamber - Protecting our Most Valuable Resource

A 2010 OCC Employer Survey found over three-quarters of Ontario employers link workforce training to increased quality of output, improved service, and increased staff morale and motivation. Businesses across Ontario understand how knowledgeable workers support innovation and economic prosperity, said Len Crispino, OCC President & CEO. Unfortunately, the current workforce training system has a number of gaps that limit its ability to produce a highly skilled workforce. One of these gaps is the lack of private sector involvement in the design of workforce training, which results in program development that overlooks the needs of business. Rapidly evolving technology and ongoing business development require workers to have a diverse skill set. Private sector involvement and support for ongoing workforce training programs is critical to ensuring people are keeping up with the demands of an everchanging workplace and have appropriate job-based skills.

www.kingstonchamber.on.ca
Dynamic and diversified economies require training programs to be aligned with emerging sectors and regional economic development strategies, said Crispino. We need to strengthen the link between education deliverers and the private sector to equip Ontarios workforce with valuable, indemand skills. The Protecting Our Most Valuable Resource report offers recommendations to the Ontario government that focus on the funding and infrastructure of the current training system. The report, and its recommendations, can be found at occ.on.ca/2011/06/protecting-our-most-valuable-resource. Ontario Chamber of Commerce Launches Inaugural Report on Workforce Training The Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with business and education delivery organizations, has produced a report which makes the business case for reforming the workplace training system in Ontario. The report draws on survey results which point to growing private sector involvement in workforce learning and development and reveal the types of government interventions required to stimulate this innovation- and productivity-enhancing activity. The report is of interest to government policy-makers, researchers, practitioners as well as stakeholders in business, education, labour, and academia. To obtain a hard copy, please contact Kelly Pritchard, Policy Analyst, Ontario Chamber of Commerce at kellypritchard@occ.on.ca or 416-482-5222 ext 246. and are able to weed through all these calls and ask the right questions. Can you??? There is a huge payment system behind the use of plastic. No one questions this incredible system which does allow for seamless and secure transactions. Almost half the retail transactions made today are by debit or credit card. The processing costs for these services are set by Visa and MasterCard International. They determine the cost to us and ultimately the cost to you for being able to have your customers pay you by credit card. Those fees to us are called interchange. The basic cost to all processors for an electronically swiped Visa card is 1.54% and 1.59% for MasterCard. This can be found on any of our fee schedules and on both the Visa and MasterCard web sites. The Visa link is as follows: www.visa.ca/en/aboutcan/mediacentre/interchange/pdf/visa -interchange-rates-current.pdf Right away you will know that if companies are offering less than the rates above, they are building in those costs somewhere else. Good News For Merchants The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has come out with 10 requirements for the Payment Card Networks to abide by. All of these make this industry more transparent and give the merchants more choice. Two components of special interest to merchants is that all merchants must receive 90 days notice of a rate increase and secondly during those 90 days they are able to get out of their existing agreement without any penalty. If this has happened with your processor the window to shop is now. The rest of the elements of the code can be found at: http://www.fin.gc.ca/n10/data/10-049_1eng.asp Let me provide you with a free evaluation of your current processing fees. I am always able to prove savings with the Chamber of Commerce program; its just a matter of how much. After the evaluation you will have a much clearer understanding of this industry, and regardless of where you bank, this member benefit is one youll want to take advantage of.

Essential Skills Day

The second annual Essential Skills Day will take place on Friday, September 23rd to raise awareness of the nine essential skills and their impact on the workplace. This initiative is a public awareness campaign that aligns with OCC's recent report, Protecting Our Most Valuable Resource, which focused on the need to improve Ontario's learning infrastructure and promote lifelong skill development. More information about Essential Skills Day can be found at www.EssentialSkillsDay.ca.

If you accept credit cards as a form of payment in your business you have no doubt been bombarded with companies reaching out to you promising better rates. This is a common complaint I hear everyday. My clients understand this industry and how it works. They are aware of all the fees

CHAMBER EUCHRE TOURNAMENT COMES UP TRUMPS!!

Its a fun way to network every time.
On Thursday, the 25th of August, the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce held their Summer Euchre Tournament at the Kingston Brewing Company. One of the most interesting things that Chamber staff and volunteers noticed is how many new faces were seen at this fun networking event. This is so important, because it is the new members, the returning members and people who are taking a renewed interest in the Chamber that can really drive us forward. Events like our Euchre tournaments and new ideas we have for 2012 will ensure that the Chamber is listening intently to our membership who want new opportunities to meet new people, get involved and strengthen the business community through Chamber networking. Thank you very much to the staff at the Kingston Brewing Company for once again being great hosts.
