Elementary Schools

Our educators bring everything, make a mess, teach something, clean up, and leave only smiles (and some followup ideas for you). Grade 1 House of Seasons: Students learn about the phases of water. Meets standards and benchmarks in science, social studies, and language arts. Grade 2 Conservation Connections: Students create a river/aquifer model and learn what happens when we all want the same water. Meets standards and benchmarks in science, math, social studies, and language arts. Grade 3 Incredible Journey: Students roll the die and move through the water cycle. Meets standards and benchmarks in science and social studies (language arts extension). Grade 4 Dirty to Drinkable: Students make a working sand filter to clean dirty water. Meets standards and benchmarks in science and social studies (language arts extension). Grade 5 Leaky Faucet: Students learn how little fresh drinking water we have on Earth. They measure and calculate how much is wasted from a leaky faucet. Meets standards and benchmarks in science, math, and social studies (language arts extension).

Presentation Curriculum:

Grade 6+ The Water-Energy Connection: Students must supply their town with electricity by using water. Theyll need that electricity to supply drinking water. Decisions must be made when drought strikes! Extension: WaterElectricity Diagram. Grade 7+ Theres No Point to This Pollution: Students learn about nonpoint source pollution and cumulative impacts. Extension: Write a pamphlet or commercial to help us Keep the Rio Grande! Grade 8+ Early Runoff: Students investigate the effects of dirt on snow to see if it may impact spring runoff. Extension: Make a map or model of your plans to help us capture early spring runoff water. Biology Biodiversity is Grand (updated): Play a game to learn how our decisions impact the future biodiversity of New Mexico. Extension: Write a futuristic short story about New Mexico based upon the game. Chemistry What Scientists Do with Number One and Number Two: Students make wastewater and then separate it into trash, water and sludge. Students learn the chemistry of the nitrogen cycle and methane generation. Extension: Turn school trash into cool compost. Physics/Earth Science Calculate a Watershed: Make a mathematical model of a watershed/lake/ dam system. Extension: Write and present a report describing and explaining the mathematical watershed model. Environmental Studies Pollution Detective: Students try to find the source of groundwater pollution using pH paper. Extension: Produce a Public Service Announcement teaching us how to protect our ground and surface water.
