Millstream Storytelling Festival

To celebrate Rowan Public Librarys 12th annual Stories by the Millstream Festival, performer Suzi Whaples will be at the library for a family storytelling program. This exciting event will take place on Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Stanback Room at Headquarters in Salisbury. Please join us for a free and fun evening of entertaining stories that will captivate your attention Over the last 30 years Suzi has been entertaining people of all ages with her stories in at least 19 states. Last year she was a Featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN. The stories Suzi tells are mostly stories that she has written and family stories passed down from her Appalachian ancestors. Her talent is combining Appalachian myth, legend, life experiences, and culture into an enthralling performance.

Summer Readers Rule

RPL just concluded a summer of reading with over 100 preschool and elementary school programs. The theme was One World, Many Stories. Thousands of children and parents participated at the librarys three branches and at RPLs new Western Rowan Outreach Center located in Cleveland Town Hall. The children reported reading over 9800 hours. We congratulate the winners of our official One World, Many Stories prize baskets: Abby Buechler, Emma Hamilton, Hunter Watts, Kolton Broadus, Emma Grace Shoe and Neely Vinson. Teens who registered for the Teen Summer Reading Program, You Are Here, were encouraged to fill out reading logs, write book reviews and draw a book cover in order to bid on some wonderful prizes provided by the Friends of Rowan Public Library. The 155 participating teens submitted 41 book covers, 226 book reviews and turned in over 7600 hours of reading.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving @ RPL

In 2011 Rowan Public Library Foundation celebrates its first 100 years of service to the citizens of Rowan County! Throughout its first 100 years RPL has grown into a great public library dedicated to encouraging the joy of reading and life long learning. As part of this celebration the RPL Foundation has set a goal to add 100 new endowments in 2011 in support of continued improvement and expansion of library resources and services during its next 100 years of service to the community. Currently, the Foundations primary focus is to enhance the librarys collection of books and other resources. There are now 144 named endowments, ranging from a minimum of $1,000 to over $100,000. Please consider celebrating with us by establishing a named endowment through the Foundation, Endowments may be established in the name of the donor or in memory or in honor of someone. An endowment can be established with a minimum gift of $1,000, which can be paid in installments. For information about setting up an endowment, please call Pam at 704-216-8231.
