Haraam - The product contains a Haraam ingredient and is therefore not permissible to consume. Mashbooh/Doubtful - The product contains a doubtful ingredient which some Ulama have declared
there is insufficient information about the detailed make-up of the product.

Some Haraam/Doubtful Ingredients Shellac (E904) - a resin from the lac insect. Used as a glazing agent on sweets, chocolates, etc. At times disguised as simply glazing agent , polishing agent or confectioners glaze on ingredient labelling. Gelatin - derived mostly from hides of cattle and pigs. Bovine Gelatin simply means that the raw material is from cows. It does not authenticate the Halaal status of the raw material used. Avoid unless confirmed to be from Halaal animals. Carmine (E120) - a red colour obtained from female insects. Also referred to as Carminic acid or simply, colours on ingredient labelling. Calf Whey - which is a bi-product of the cheese making process. Enzymes are used to coagulate the milk in cheesemaking and sometimes these enzymes can be from non-Halaal animals and even pigs at times. This would render the whey powder derived from such a process non-Halaal or at least doubtful.
