Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes Students will be able to formulate real world problems into mathematical statements. Students will interpret a narrative description of a situation and set up variables and relationships needed to determine a solution. Students will be able to develop solutions to mathematical problems at the level appropriate to this course, i.e., apply the principles and techniques of dierential and integral calculus. Students will be able to describe or demonstrate mathematical solutions either numerically or graphically. General Course Information Pre-requisite C- or better in MATH 1314 or an equivalent course. Course Description The course will cover functions and graphs, dierentiation, maxima and minima, exponential and logarithmic functions, and integration. Required Texts Applied Calculus for the Managerial, Life and Social Sciences, 8th Edition, S. T. Tan, published by CENGAGE/BROOKS/COLE. A physical book available in the UTD Bookstore. An electronic copy is available from the following link. http://www.cengage.com/custom/UT_D/index.html Be warned that the electronic copy lets you rent the rst half of the book for 365 days. If you take Applied Calculus II then you will have to rent the second half also, which is a separate rental! Required Supplies One or two composition notebooks, which are available at any school supply store, including the UTD Bookstore. Three bluebooks, which available for free from student government (see the following link). http://www.utdallas.edu/student/sg/services/ Notably, calculators are not required and also not allowed during exams or quizzes. There will be 1 comprehensive nal exam, exam 03. You must bring a new bluebook to each of exam 01, exam 02 and exam 03. Quizzes The quizzes will be taken in class. You will receive a zero for a missed quiz. A quiz average will be obtained by dropping the lowest two quiz scores and averaging the remaining quizzes. The quiz average will count as 20% of your course grade. Homework Homework will be completed out of class. You will receive a zero for a missed homework. A homework average will be obtained by dropping the lowest two homework scores and averaging the remaining homework scores. The homework average will count as 10% of your course grade. Notebook You will take notes during class in any way you see t. You will then neatly copy your class notes into your composition notebook, following the specied guidelines. This notebook will be turned-in at the beginning of the rst lecture every week and returned to you at the end of the same lecture. When you turn in your notebook, it must contain the material covered during the previous week. The notebook will be graded as a completion grade. The notebook will count as 10% of your course grade.
