Q1 The following results were obtained in a tensile test on a mild steel specimen of original diameter 20mm and gauge length 50mm. At the limit of proportionality the load was 100 kN and the extension was 0.5mm. The specimen yielded at a load of 115 kN and maximum load withstood was 200 kN. After rupture, the total length between gauge marks was found 6.67cm and diameter of neck was 1.72cm. Calculate youngs modulus and stress at the limit of proportionality, the yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, percentage elongation and contraction. Q2 . The piston of a steam engine is 300 mm in diameter and the piston rod is of 50 mm diameter. The steam pressure is 1 N/mm2. Find the stress in the piston rod and elongation in a length of 800 mm. E = 200 GPa Q3. A round bar is subjected to an axial load of 100 kN. Calculate diameter D if the stress there is 100 MN/m 2. Find also the total elongation. (E=200GPa)

Q4. A steel bar AB of uniform thickness 20 mm, Tapers uniformly from 75 mm to 15 mm in a length of 500 mm. From first principles determine the elongation of plate; if an axial tensile force of 100 kN is applied on it. [ E=2*105N/mm2] Q5. A tensile load of 50 kN is acting on a rod of diameter 50 mm and a length of 5m. A bore of diameter 25 mm is made centrally in the rod at one end. To what length the rod should be bored, so that the total extension will increase by 25% under the same tensile load. [E=2*105 N/mm2] Q6. A load of 300 kN is applied on a short concrete column 250 mm X 250 mm. The column is reinforced by steel bars of total area 5600 mm2. If the modulus of elasticity of steel is 15 times that concrete, find the stresses in concrete and steel. If the stress in the concrete not exceed 4N/mm2, find the area of the steel required so that the column may support a load of 600kN. Q7. A 500 mm long bar has rectangular cross-section 20 mm x 40 mm. The bar is subjected to : (a) 40 kN tensile force on 20 mm x 40 mm face. (b) 200 kN compressive force on 20 mm x 500 mm face. (c) 300 kN tensile force on 40 mm x 500 mm face. Find the change in dimensions and volume, if E=2*105 N/mm2 and =0.3. Q8. Copper rod 15mm diameter, 0.8m long is heated through 50C. What is its expansion when free to expand . Suppose the expansion is prevented by gripping it at both ends, find the stress, its nature and force applied by the grips, when: (a) The grips do not yield. (b) one grip yields back by 0.5mm. Take c= 18.5*10-6/C and Ec=1.25*105 N/mm2 Q 9. A steel rod 2.5m long is secured between two walls. If the load on the rod is zero at 60C, compute the stress when the temperature drops to 20 C. the cross-sectional area of the rod is 1200 mm2, =11.7*10-6/C and E=200 GPa. Solve assuming- (i) the walls are rigid (ii) The walls spring back by a total distance of 0.5 mm. Q 10. A steel tube with 24 mm external diameter and 18 mm internal diameter encloses a copper rod 15mm diameter to which it is rigidly joined at each end. If at a temperature of 10C, there is no longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and tube when the temperature is raised to 200C. ES =210,000 N/mm2 S = 11*10-6 / C EC =100,000 N/mm2 C = 18*10-6 / C
