INTRODUCTION About Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), the implementing agency, was established in August 1961 under the provisions of the Road Transport Corporation Act 1950 with the objective of providing adequate, efficient, economic and properly coordinated road transport services. Three Corporations viz., BMTC, Bangalore from 15-08-1997, NWKRTC,

Hubli from 01-11-1997 and NEKRTC, Gulbarga from 01-10-2000 were formed out, on a regional basis, with KSRTC doing operations covering Southern Karnataka and interstate areas. KSRTC operates its services to all villages in the State, which have motorable roads. 92% of the villages in monopoly area (6743 out of 7298) and 44% in non-monopoly area (5158 out of 11789) have been provided with transport facility by KSRTC. At present it has one corporate office, 13 divisional offices, 62 depots, 114 bus stations, 2 bus bodybuilding workshops,1 printing press, 3 training Institutes and 1 hospital. It operates 6189 schedules with 6830 vehicles (including 103 hired private vehicles) covering 21.86 lakh Kms. and carries on an average 24.5 lakh passengers daily. About 30,318 employees are working in the Corporation. INDUSTRY PROFILE
In the long haul, the world has become much smaller. The global transportation industry, hauling freight via trains, boats, planes, and trucks, is using state-of-theart telecommunications -- from Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) satellites to radio tags -- to track cargo and ensure fast and secure delivery of shipments. But in addition to high-tech improvements, a simple metal box has been pivotal in unifying the world of cargo shipping.

With the changing economic scenario, factors such as globalization of markets, international economic integration, removal of barriers to business and trade and increased competition have enhanced the need of transportation. It is one of the most important infrastructure requirement which is essential for the expansion of opportunities and plays an important role in making or breaking the competitive

positioning.

Transport volumes in India remain much less than those in the developed countries. India has still to go a long way in strengthening its transportation network. The countries transportation network suffers from several inadequacies and, in particular it has little resilience to deal with unforeseen demands.

Transportation, like all industries is largely influenced by information and communication technologies with the focus being on knowledge of customer needs and value added services. Surface transport is provided by the Road and the Indian Railways (primarily for carrying low value bulk commodity, mostly for the government sector). Cargo Road Transport is entirely in the hands of the private sector. An estimated 1.2 million trucks (9 tons capacity) crisscross the country covering more than 80,000 kilometers of roads. In India road transportation is preferred for cargo movement, where flexibility of routing assumes importance. It

facilitates door-to-door delivery, overcoming unnecessary delays which normally take place in the other modes of transportation.

The transportation industry, which involves carrying passengers and freight, is among the largest employers in the world. The major divisions of the transportation sector are:

InfraStructure : This includes the construction and maintenance of roads, canals, terminals, stations,

depots and seaports. The ownership of transportation infrastructure could be public or private. Vehicles: It includes the development of various modes of transportation automobiles, trains, ships and aircrafts.

Operations: This encompasses the methods by which vehicles are operated. It also includes their financing and legalities. The primary mode of transportation in the early age was animal-driven carts. The Romans were the first to build paved roads. The development of cities across the world led to the growth of shipping.

Transportation Industry: Major Player

The major players of the transportation industry are: Railways: The US has the biggest railway network (approximately 240,000 kms). Other countries with vast railway lines are Russia (154,000 kms) and

Canada (72,961 kms).

Airways: The major airlines are British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Air France-KLM and Southwest Airlines.

Shipping and logistics: The chief shipping companies are APM Maersk (TEU capacity: 2,031,886), Mediterranean Shipping Company (1,469,865) and CMA CGM Group (988,141). The transportation industry supports economic development by aiding the production and distribution of goods and services. Also, the industry assists in the propagation of ideas and knowledge by facilitating the movement of professionals.

The modes of road transportation in India can be broadly divided into three different segments two-wheelers & three-wheelers; cars & utility vehicles; and heavy & commercial vehicles. Through the

mid-1990s and into the 21st century, the face of Indian road transport has witnessed significant changes. The change was triggered by the economic liberalization in the early 1990s, which led to the entry of many global automobile majors such as Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Skoda and DaimlerChrysler.

Until then, they had been barred from setting up manufacturing or marketing facilities in India since the government's restrictive policies aimed at protecting domestic automobile players. With superior quality and highly efficient product offerings from these companies, the domestic players felt the need to restructure their operations and come up with new product varieties.

The restructuring was aimed at different customer segments and attempted to match the quality and efficiency of global players. The intensified competition in various segments of the industry also led to trends such as affordable pricing, increased buyer incentives and attractive financing packages. These trends, coupled with the buoyant economy, favourable monsoons, urbanization and rising number of double income families led to drastic changes in customer preferences. This markedly changed the face of the two-wheeler and fourwheeler segments of the Indian automobile industry. Travel and Transportation forms the backbone of infrastructure the major sector of any economy. Millions of people and businesses rely on an extensive, inter-related network. The transportation industry is in an era of unprecedented change. Marked by unending demands for increased services and severely limited budgets for infrastructure, the industry faces continuous challenges. The travel industry is exploring new horizons in the way it does business, thanks to technology. Today, with the help of technology the travel industry is creating new propositions for its

customers - online booking, remote travel management, and new age CRM programs.

On the other hand, 3PL and Logistics provider industry that is heavily dependent on infrastructure set by transportation has been embryonic to offer greater scope and more complex solutions. Expansion of networks through rapid globalization with mergers and acquisitions amongst logistics providers and need to fulfill complex global contracts calls for higher performance through greater and deeper end-to-end integration and state of the art visibility tools. The underlying objective is, seamless flow of information across the complex and growing value chains, leading to effective and faster decision making which in turn leads to better transparency and visibility.

Image, Outreach, and Recruitment

The transportation industry is currently seeking to develop a pipeline of younger workers to help industry employers meet their workforce needs. Specifically, employers are looking to help high school, technical school and community college graduates successfully enter the transportation industry. In addition, industry employers are recruiting future workers through untapped

labor pools, which include dislocated workers, transitioning military personnel, veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Retention and advancement

To address entry-level retention among workers in transportation, the industry seeks to develop competency models and career ladders for future workers to demonstrate the viability of jobs in the industry. The industry is also

focused on management retention among experienced workers. Expanding access to training programs for incumbent workers is also a concern. To help workers gain the skills industry employers demand, the industry is developing effective partnerships between workforce investment boards and One-Stop Career Centers and developing training models and skill certifications to help close the skills gap.

Transportation in India is a large and varied sector of the economy. Modes of conveyance for transport of goods in India range from people's heads (on which loads are balanced) and bicycle rickshaws to trucks and railroad cars. The national railroad was the major freight hauler at independence, but road transport in India grew rapidly after 1947. Both rail and road transport remain important. The share of India's transportation investments in total public investment declined during the period from the early 1950s to the early 1980s; real public transportation investment also declined during much of that period because of the need for funds in the rest of the economy. As a consequence, by the early 1980s the transportation system in India was barely meeting the needs of the nation or preparing for future economic growth. Many roads, for example, were breaking up because of overuse and lack of maintenance; railroads required new track and rolling stock. Ports needed equipment and facilities, particularly for bulk and container cargo; and at many airports the national civil airlines needed supporting equipment, including provision for instrument landings. The government planned to devote 19 percent of the

Eighth Five-Year Plan (1992-96) budget to transportation and communications, up from the 16 percent devoted to the sector during the seventh plan.

Although there is a large private-sector involvement in transportation in India, the government plays a large regulatory and developmental role. The central government has ministries to handle civil aviation, railroads, and surface transportation. Counterpart agencies are found at the state and union territory level. Critical to improving the entire transportation sector in the late 1990s is the ability of the sector to adjust to the central government's national reform initiatives, including privatization, deregulation, and reduced subsidies. The sector must also adjust to foreign trade expansion, demographic pressures and increasing urbanization, technological change and obsolescence, energy availability, and environmental and public safety concerns.

With the changing economic scenario, factors such as globalization of markets, international economic integration, removal of barriers to business and trade and increased competition have enhanced the need of transportation. It is one of the most important infrastructure requirement which is essential for the expansion of opportunities and plays an important role in making or breaking the competitive positioning.

Transport volumes in India remain much less than those in the developed countries. India has still to go a long way in strengthening its transportation network. The countries transportation network suffers from several inadequacies

and, in particular it has little resilience to deal with unforeseen demands.

POLICIES AND STRATEGIES OF MARKETING DEPARTMENT: Policies are broad based statements of mutual understanding (past and current practice) or general statements of future intent. They provide limits within which decisions can more easily be made, thus allowing decision makers some discretion in carrying out the mission of the organization (Department of Marketing).

The policies included in this set originate from a conscious attempt to articulate a customary and general way of behaving. Thus, they are useful in producing some degree of standardization of behavior among existing faculty, as well as in socializing new faculty into the norms, beliefs, and values of their colleagues.

Policies provide guidelines for acceptable behavior, while simultaneously allowing considerable latitude & flexibility to departmental faculty in deviating from what might otherwise be strict prescriptions (such as rules).

Policies, then, are one indicator of a culture within our academic work unit (Department of Marketing). They help to clarify acceptable, and unacceptable, forms of behavior for all, thus (hopefully) preventing undesirable deviations from the norms.

As KSRTC is state run corporation, they were following Directive Style of leadership. Also they were motivating their employees through AchievementOriented leadership which made the firm to stand first in profit & service dimensions.

Management style is more a matter of what managers do than what they say; how do companys managers spend their time? What are they focusing attention on Symbolism- the creation and maintenance (or sometimes deconstruction) of meaning is a fundamental responsibility of managers. How differently they are doing the things (right) in their firm shows the style of their operation. Even though KSRTC is a state run Corporation the way it is doing its activities in a different style is really excellent & in no way inferior to any private road

transportation firms. No other state run RTC in India do have this type of wide range of services with by adopting innovative styles.

Different dimension that make the stylish operation of KSRTC are listed as below: The Board of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation consisted of 16 directors and one invitee as on 31st March 2011. McKinsey 7-S Framework

The 7-S Model is a tool for managerial analysis and action that provides a structure with which to consider a company as whole, so that the organizations problems may be diagnosed and a strategy may be developed and implemented.

These seven elements are distinguished is now called hard Ss and soft Ss. The hard elements are feasible and easy to identify. They can be found in strategy statements/ corporation plans, organizational charts and other documents. The four soft Ss however are feasible since capabilities, values and elements of corporate culture are continuously developing and changing. They are highly determined by the people at work in the organization. Therefore, it is much more difficult to plan or to influence the characteristics of the soft elements. The 7-S Model diagram illustrates the multiplicity interconnectedness of element that defines an organization ability to change. So, a change in one has a ripple effect on all the others. It is impossible to make progress on one without making progress on all. So McKinseys 7s Model is applied in the KSRTC.

STRUCTURE The structure of KSRTC has a well-established structure which clearly describes the hierarchy of authority and accountability in an organization, the way the organizations units relate to each other. Features are as follows: Entire Corporation is divided on its function and activities. More hierarchy and span of control. Clear roles and responsibilities. Decision-making and controlling is decentralized.

Explicit line of communication is followed to co-ordinate activities between departments. Existing structure ensures speedy communication. Structure of KSRTC according to Department

Innovative training skill is being adopted in providing different dimensions to its quality services. E.g. Automated Driving Track for the selection of skilled drivers

STYLE The Organization adopts both top-down as well as bottom-up approach in various situations e.g. in case of making major decision like policies, procedure discipline this task will be taken by the top management and other like: What should be the goals and objective of the company? What are the policies and procedure should be adopted by the company? What should be the revenue for the survival of the company in the competitive transport? The middle level management will make their decision like technical concern to the quality of the buses purchased by the vendor and how much buses are to be taken in order to provide the better services to the commuters. Bottom approach is seen in the middle level management as to take the approval by the top management regarding the purchase of the raw material and as well as buses for the company.

AUTHORITARIAN / PARTICIPATIVE The organization follows the both authoritative as well as participative style of system in the organization. These can be said so because each and every employee of the organization is allowed to give there point of view which is concerned to improvement and profits of the organization. But the major decision has to be taken by the Board of Directors in the organization whether it is correct or wrong to be considered in some special cases. That is How management acts is more important then what management says

Shared value is going to define Vision, Mission and Quality policy making it transparent to all. KSRTC follows its Core Value i.e. Customer Delightness and Enhancement. The employees share the same guiding values. Values are things that you would stave for even if they were demonstrably not profitable. STRATEGY

Strategy is a long term plan of action to achieve a particular goal, Strategy is differentiated from tactics or immediate actions with resources at hand by its nature of being extensively premeditated & often practically rehearsed. KSRTC uses its distinguished quality and premiere services as its competitive advantage for long term. Some of its strategies include: Revenue is generation-alternate sources of funds like providing the restaurants etc in the bus stands. Identification of customer demand and designing right service mix like: introducing of Volvo buses in metro city. Resource allocation strategy: how many buss is required in rural area in annum Innovative plans as been implemented in like Bio-Diesel & Ethanol Blends .i.e. KSRTC has introduced Enerdiesel, a patented

technological blend of pollutant-free ethanol and high-speed diesel into buses. It has stability to improve lubricity up to 40% maintains engine performance & fuel economy. Bio-Diesel: Corporation has also introduced yet another toxic emission-reducing fuel extracted from the seeds of the indigenous tree pongamia pinnata for producing bio diesel at one of the depot. KSRTC has developed innovative idea where initiative is to monitor and manage security and traffic related activities of the KSRTC from a designated centralized control room on day to day basis. The information based on various bus operations Union activities, strikes

& break downs are received at this centre. So received is passed on to the concerned field level officers for quick action. SWOC ANALYSIS OF KSRTC

Strengths of KSRTC KSRTC is only Corporation which first introduced the AWATAR (Any Where Any Time Advance Reservation) System for the Commuters. KSRTC is providing wide transport facilities Network for entire state and inter-state. KSRTC is providing Wide variety of the Bus Facilities Like: Airavatha, Ambari, Rajahamsa, Mayura, Sheetal and Mercedees Benz. KSRTC is providing the Good Training for the employees (automated electronic Driving Test System for Recruiting of Driver risk) KSRTC is first to introduce large number of Volvo buses in the state when compared to other state transport department. Indeed KSRTC is the only Passenger transport corporation to deploy more than 8000 ETMs (Electronic Ticketing Machine).

Weakness of KSRTC Major weakness is: Salary to the bus conductors and diver is very low when compared to other private transportation in the initial period (Probationary period) In Rural Area Transportation facilities is dominated by the Private sector. As customers expectation are increasing day by day. It has become difficult to satisfy them completely. R&D has to be improved in the Mechanical Department.

Opportunities of KSRTC KSRTC can increase rural road networks and travel speed. To develop more transportation facilities from rural to urban areas. By looking at the present infrastructure skilled workforce, technology and emerging demand condition, corporation can plans to put one step ahead to diversify transportation.

Challenges Price competition from Private Travels. Fuel Price varies periodically and its availability is low. Increasing comfortability of personal transportation like cars and bike. Competition from the Mexci cabs in the rural areas.

Learning Experience
Learning is synonymous to experience. This is because every human being learns hence only out of experience is the way of life. In life person enhances his/her knowledge only when exposed to real world situations and

by being exposed to the real condition in a systematic manner. He/She understand how to live and face various unforeseen situations. This is exactly what the MBA course does to its students. The MBA course has the Internship training as the part of its curriculum to make the students experience the actual corporate world and learn its way of functioning. In this competitive world this kind of approach is extremely indispensable students coming out. As MBA student would be ready to have interface with the corporate world with determination, confidence and competence. Todays corporate world demands for all these qualities without which facing the corporate world is difficult task. In this internship training I have learnt a lot. Interacting with an organization that has existed since long was an experience of life time. The employees of KSRTC had been of tremendous support to me in doing my project work. They guided me in every step and gave all the necessary information for doing organization study. This has made learn the people in organization are very cooperative. Without their support it would have been highly difficult.

The working of the company is well planned. There is gradual improvement in operational efficiency and taking necessary steps to improve the financial performance of the organization year by year. After my experience in KSRTC, I have understood that providing services is not a simple thing to be just bid, it involves lot of procedures,

efficiency and overall a commitment by the employees to work for the best towards society for whom it is important.

According to people saying that They are the major source of revenue for the KSRTC transportation but we found that its partial true i.e. KSRTC also going to get revenue from the infrastructure provided in the bus stands like: Canteens, Commercial shop etc.

I particularly enjoyed by learning how Mckinsey7s model are applied to the organization. Working on this project at KSRTC also gave us first-hand experience of work in industry. We will now be able to relate better to any work experience in the future. All in all, it was an enriching, educative and enjoyable experience
