Q1 A solid circular shaft of 100 mm diameter is transmitting 110 kW at 150 r.p.m. Find the intensity of induced shear stress in the shaft. Q2. Design a suitable diameter for a circular shaft required to transmit 80.2 kW (120 H.P.) at 180 r.p.m. The shear stress in the shaft is not to exceed 70 MN/m2 and the maximum torque exceeds the mean by 40%. Also calculate the angle of twist in a length of 2 metres. Take G = 90 GN/m2. Q3 A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/5, transmits 600 kW at 110 r.p.m. Maximum torque is 12% greater than the mean torque, shear stress should not exceed 60 MN/m2. The twist in 3 m length should not exceed 10. Calculate the maximum size of the shaft, C = 80 GN/m2. Q4. 20 kN/m torque is applied to a shaft of 7 cm diameter. Calculate i) Maximum shear stress in the shaft. ii) Angle of twist per unit length of shaft. Take G = 105 N/mm2.

Q5. A solid shaft of 200mm diameter is to be replaced by a hollow steel shaft with internal diameter equal to 0.5 D where D is external diameter. Design the hollow shaft and find out the saving in material. The value of maximum shear stress may be assumed as same for both the shafts. Q6. A solid shaft transmits power at the rate of 2000 kW at the speed of 60 rpm. If the safe allowable stress is 80 MN/m2, find the minimum diameter of the shaft.

Q7 A solid steel shaft 6m long is securely fixed at each end. A torque of 1250 Nm is applied to the shaft at a section 2.4 meters from one end. What are fixing torque setup at the ends of the shaft? Calculate also the angle of twist for the section where the torque is applied. Modulus of rigidity. G= 84 GN/m2. Q8. Two shafts one of aluminium alloy and other of steel, are coupled end to end. The steel shaft is 2m long and is hollow with external diameter 100mm and internal diameter 50mm while the aluminium shaft is solid with 100 mm diameter throughout its length of 1m. The compound shaft is fixed at ends and a torque of 15 kNm is applied to the coupling. Neglecting the effect of coupling find: (i) the maximum shear stresses in the two portions of the shaft; (ii) the angle of twist at the coupling. Given : Gsteel = 80 GN/m2; Galuminium = 25 GN/m2, Q9. A hollow shaft of 25 mm outside diameter and 20 mm inside diameter is subjected to a torque of 50 N-m. Determine the shear stresses at the outside and inside diameter of the shaft.

Q10. A solid shaft is subjected to to a bending moment of 2.3 kNm and a twisting moment of 3.45 kNm. Find the diameter of the shaft if the permissible tensile and shear stresses for the material of the shaft are limited to 703 MN / m2 and 421.8 MN / m2 respectively.
