His Excellency Most Rev. Fernando R. Capalla, DD is presently the Archbishop of Davao. He is a native of Iloilo City, born on November 1, 1934. His sacerdotal ordination was on March 18, 1961 and his episcopal ordination was on June 18, 1975, both memorable events were held at the St. Elizabeths Cathedral, Jaro, Iloilo City. He received his elementary diploma at the Leon Central Elementary School and his secondary diploma at the Colegio de San Agustin. He completed his seminary training at the San Vicente Ferrer Seminary in 1961 and earned his Master of Arts (MA) in English Literature at the St. Johns University in 1967. I have been grateful to the MSP for the opportunity to spend my licentiate studies herein Rome. Yet this not as what many think as simply enjoying the place. It has been full of challenges and struggles. After a year of my stay at the White Fathers College and study Moral Theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana, I can only be awed by how I had persevered in the midst of all those struggles that came on a reason to look forward to another year of accomplishing my studies. Probably, one will be interested to know how my daily activities go here and how I learned from my experiences. Let me share to you a bit of my stories. During weekdays, I attend classes or lectures which are all in Italian. Could you imagine how I appeared inside the aula (classroom) especially in the first few months when I could not understand the language and could not follow the lecture? Certainly my feeling in those moments was sort of dumb. In fact, some professors cracked jokes in Italian and while many of the students were already laughing, I had been in the middle of discerning the joke. After my classes, I usually go home for my lunch with the community. At times, I sat with the French-speaking priest and again, I listened to their conversations but failed to understand them. These experiences are indeed humbling. This is an experience of patience and endurance. This is also a challenge to work harder in order to cope with the demands of situation and keep the pace of student life here. Challenges are opportunities for growth. I have not forgotten this idea since I was in the seminary formation. This is also what I wish to share with the people that pain and difficulties can be a source of creativity and productivity and not selfpity. Thus, these are not only opportunities to grow mature psycho-emotionally, but more so to grow spiritually, that is, in our relationship with God. We can therefore look at these difficulties as grace. These are moments for self-transcendence so that we can share more and give more ourselves for others. St. Paul reminds his communities that this grace works effectively in times of in adequacies, even in poverty, because these are their opportunities to go beyond themselves and share the little they have (2 Cor 8:1-15).

Three encounters with the Rock upon which she builds her new life in Christ. Jennie Bee Heaton, born and raised in Buddhism in Malaysia, at age 30 marries Terry Heaton a globe-trotter from India and devout Catholic. They settle down in the United Kingdom, where she begins to familiarize herself with Catholicism as she more or less willingly accompanies Terry to church on Sundays. Never really convinced of Buddhism, she always carries with her these lingering questions, "Who are you, God Where are you?" A first encounter at the tomb of Peter: In September 2005 she makes a pilgrimage with her husband to the tomb of John Paul II. There, in front of the tomb of St. Peter, they providentially meet Brother Branigan Sherman, originally from California, who is studying for the priesthood in Rome. Their conversation immediately turns to the faith. "No, I am not Catholic, although I believe in God. But I have a lot questions and doubts...." she responds. "Ah, and what kind of questions and doubts?" asks Brother Branigan. She replies, "Oh, too many things!" In other words, "No thanks." Yet it isn't total denial; for the next two years they keep in touch via email. Little by little, Brother Branigan responds to each of her doubts, questions, and even anger with God. Intellectually she makes much progress, but when she considers baptism, it just doesn't feel quite right in her heart. I am not ready." A second encounter in the Basilica of St. Peter: At Christmas of 2007, Terry and Jennie return to Rome for Brother Branigan's priestly ordination, which moves her to tears: 48 young men who had given up their lives for Christ, such tremendous faith, "Why don't I have that?" she asks herself. Then at Fr. Branigan's first mass, Jennie feels an irresistible attraction to the Eucharist; she knows God is calling her to something more, but just can't take the step. "I could not stop crying. It was like this turmoil was bubbling inside me. I had to speak with Fr. Branigan!" The only moment to speak happens to be, once again, in St. Peter's, while the rest of the family and friends are on the tour. They speak and pray together, asking God for the gift of faith. Fr. Branigan tells her the story about the man who thought he trusted in God's providence: a flood comes and he is first offered escape in a car, then in a boat, and finally, as the water is rising, in a helicopter, but every time he refuses saying, "No, God will save me!" When he goes to heaven he asks God, "Why didn't you save me?" God responds, "I sent you a car, then a boat, then a helicopter, what more could you want?" After that conversation things are better, but she still feels unsure.

I had fun during this Talk Around. Perhaps it was because everyone was wearing colorful clothes, or maybe it just so happened that all of us were in a good mood. The talk itself was enough to bring out the child in everyone festivals! Ah it does bring back memories. Festivals or fiestas as we call them are quite fun in the Philippines. These colorful celebrations are an innate part of Philippine culture. ..the culture of happiness. Filipinos are a happy bunch. We are very fond of jokes and we love laughter. Even in the most dire situation, we always find something comic to laugh about. And we love noise, and crowds, and of coursefood! The topic itself brings back good memories. We used to have a farm in Rizal, Laguna. During a town fiesta, all these small houses would be filled with food, and you could go house hopping, or even be invited to eat at the house of a total stranger. It would be terribly impolite to say no. Every house would serve almost exactly the same dishes, the trick is to eat a little per house, so one could visit as many houses as possible. During fiestas, no matter how poor a family is, they would always prepare food, No matter how small or humble. It is a matter of family pride. They will even borrow money just to prepare for a fiesta. This was where I first got to taste Ginataang Itik, which is basically duck cooked in some sticky, milky sauce. (Sorry, but I am no expert cook). It was great though, and until now, it remains one of the best dishes I have ever tasted in my entire life! My other favorites include ube ( dont you just miss ube?) leche flan, and of course halo-halo. I think I was in high school when I last went to a fiesta. It reminds me of a time when things were very simple. And happiness was simple. I had a simple life with simple problems, which I then thought were very complicated. Of course, fiestas are also a time to have a good Speaking of halo-halo I excuse to visit the house of your tasted the best halo-halo of my crush. He/she could never say no life in Rizal.
