We Celebrate the Fil-Mission Sunday!

In 1967, the Catholic bishops of the Philippines declared every last Sunday of July as the Filipino Mission Sunday or Fil-Mission Sunday for the whole Catholic Church in the Philippines. This year, it falls on July 27. Fil-Mission Sunday is intended as a day of thanksgiving for the gift of faith that we have received from God through the efforts of the missionaries in the past. It is also an opportunity for us to reflect Fil-Mission Sunday poster July 2008 on our common missionary calling to share our faith with other people, especially with those who have not yet heard the Good News. Fil-Mission Sunday is a special occasion for us to show our solidarity with all our Filipino missionaries, especially with the Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP), the standard bearer of the Catholic Church of the Philippines for the foreign missions. We express our oneness with their missionary efforts through our support and prayers. The Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP) is a community of zealous and committed Filipino missionary priests who live out the charism of spending their lives by proclaiming the Gospel in the missions. The Bishops of the Catholic Church in the Philippines established the MSP in 1965 to mark the 4th centennial celebration of the beginning of the Christian faith in our country. The mandate that the Catholic bishops gave to the MSP is to recruit, train and send Filipino missionaries in order to share our faith with other countries, especially in Asia, as a sign of our gratitude for the faith we received from God. At present, the MSP has 75 priests; most of them are working in foreign missions. The Society has sent missionaries to several Asian countries like Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and Japan; and to some countries in the Pacific region like Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Cook Islands; and in Guyana, South America. Recently, it has sent missionaries to The Netherlands, the U.S.A. and England. In the past, the MSP has served the Church in Indonesia, Solomon Islands, and Hong Kong. There are other standing invitations for mission work. The harvest is great but the laborers are few. We have to pray for more missionary vocations. The Fil-Missioners serve the spiritual and pastoral needs of the local communities in their respective mission areas. They also take part in the human development of the flock under their care. They engage in dialogue with other religions and cultures. In some countries, they also minister to the needs of the Overseas Filipino Workers. Most of them have to perform their mission work in the context of physical, geographical and cultural challenges. Thus, they needed our solidarity and support to sustain their mission work on our behalf. Offer your prayers and sacrifices. Most of our missionaries have to face loneliness, sickness, cultural barriers and even, sometimes, threats to personal security as they preach the Gospel in foreign lands. They are doing extraordinary work so they needed an equally extraordinary strength that can only come from Gods grace; they needed your prayers. Please offer your sacrifices and special intentions for the missionaries of the MSP. Pray also for more missionary vocations. Share your blessings. We can take part in the mission work of the Church by sharing our material blessings for our missionaries. Through your generous gifts the MSP will be able to train more seminarians, send more missionaries and share our Faith to more countries. The Lord promised a hundredfold return of blessings for generous people who are willing to undertake sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel. Let us thank the Lord for the gift of faith; let us pray for our Filipino missionaries so that they may truly preach and give witness to the Gospel of Gods love for all; let us become part of the mission work of the Lord by sharing our blessings for the missionary endeavor of the Philippine Church.

You are enjoying a drink after a lovely dinner with a group of your closest Korean friends, who are the same sex as yourself. Much to your dismay, you realize that the hand of one friend is resting on yout thigh. What do you do? A. B. C. D. After realizing that this friendship has a different meaning for your friend, you make an excuse and escape quickly. Realizing that this is one way of showing friendship in Korea, you reciprocate by resting your hand on your friends thigh. Feeling uncomfortable, you quietly say that in your home country, people do not do this. Accept his touch without reciprocating.

Treat the elderly with kindness and respect at all times. Bus seats should always be offered to them. If an elderly person has trouble crossing the street, or trouble carrying something, a younger person is obliged to help. Preserve social harmony at all costs; you may have to tell small lies, or adopt indirect, less efficient behavior than in the West. Remember that the status is very important. It is determined primarily by profession, family and age. Acknowledging other peoples status will make social relationship s smoother. It is also necessary to act according to ones own status. For example, a maids status is lower than that of their employer and they are most comfortable working when that distinction is clear. Do address Koreans, by their title, for example, Manager Kim, President Lee, Assistant Director Park. This shows respect and helps to identify the innumerable Mr. Kims, Mr. Lees and Miss Parks. If you can learn to say the titles in Korean, a closer feeling is established. Pass objects to someone of equal of higher status with the right hand. To show the most respect, two hands are used, or the right hand supported by the left. When passing objects to people of lower status, either hand is acceptable, but using two hands is inappropriate. Remember that highly educated people are respected, and what they say is listened to carefully. Remove all footwear before entering someones home, or when entering a temple. In offices and other public places, shoes are not removed. Remember that the same public bathrooms are sometimes used by both men and women. Women walk past mens urinals on their way to private booths. Bathrooms in homes often have wet floors, so plastic thongs are worn whenever entering the bathroom.

Comments: In Korea, physical expression between people of the same sex is natural and comfortable. There is no homosexual connotation to such behavior. Answer A wouls be totally incorrect. If you feel comfortable,a nswer B would be a good answer, or answer D. If not, it is best to let your friends know, as in answer C. Dos and Donts (GENERAL) DOS

Show affection as a sign of friendship between people of the same sex. Remember that Koreans express their affection for children through touching them. Once used to it, children enjoy the attention given to them. Remember you are expected to bargain in markets. After asking the price, give the seller a counter-offer. Finally, agree on a price somewhere between the sellers offer and your own. Bargaining is not done at supermarkets, department stores, or other places where the price of merchandise is already marked.

Some years ago, I visited our priests in Taiwan. Fr. Agustino Jugadora and Fr. Eliseo Napiere at that time were still studying the local language. They volunteered to tour me around the City of Taichung. After visiting some historical places, I asked them if we could stop by a restaurant for a cup of coffee. I was longing for a hot brew to warm my chilled body because it was winter time. The two willingly obliged. They brought me to a coffee shop overlooking the city. It was a perfect place to rest while sipping hot coffee on a cold winter day. Since I had no knowledge of the language, I was quite while they showed off their newfound facility with it. They communicated to the waiter my order. there was no such order for me but a cold cup with cube of ice in it. I made futile attempts to complain. The waiter understood my hand signals my hand signals and was quick to explain in broken English that what the two ordered for me was coffee with a lots of ice. We could only laugh at our mistake. So much for language facility!

history, and their culture. Its a tall order, but it is necessary in order to be effective in the work and the ministry. I can only admire my fellow MSP priests who have to undergo the process of learning a new language and culture. I console many of them by saying that they can also communicate with people, not only through the spoken language, but through the language of the heart. What I mean here is, to demonstrate the good news of God's love through actions, even when they cannot express it fully in words. In fact, it is the most important language that every missionary should master. After that visit, I realized how my confreres have tried in their own way to live out the Pauline spirit to joyfully spend their lives and be spent (2 Cor 12:15) in the mission, even when they cannot express fully what they want to say due to say due to language difficulties.

That experience made me realize how difficult it is to be in foreign land, especially if the local the local people speak a language different from your own. It can be very frustrating , if you cannot express what you really want to say for a lack of knowledge of language . This is not an isolated case but a common concern of missionaries when they are in a new place. Ask them about their difficulty with language, I was so impressed with them for and they would surely tell you of their managing to communicate even though own amusing anecdotes. they were new to the place and still learning the language. POPE BENEDICT XVIS MESSAGE FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY 2008

First part.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses (Acts 1:8)
My dear young friends! 1. The XXIII World Youth Day I always remember with great joy the various occasions we spent together in Cologne in August 2005. At the end of that unforgettable manifestation of faith and enthusiasm that remains engraved on my spirit and on my heart, I made an appointment with you for the next gathering that will be held in Sydney in 2008. This will be the XXIII World Youth Day and the theme will be: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses (Acts 1:8). The underlying theme of the spiritual preparation for our meeting in Sydney is the Holy Spirit and mission. In 2006 we focussed our attention on the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth. Now in 2007 we are seeking a deeper understanding of the Spirit of Love. We will continue our journey towards World Youth Day 2008 by reflecting on the Spirit of Fortitude and Witness that gives us the courage to live according to the Gospel and to proclaim it boldly. Therefore it is very important that each one of you young people - in your communities, and together with those responsible for your education - should be able to reflect on this Principal Agent of salvation history, namely the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of Jesus. In this way you will be able to achieve the following lofty goals: to recognize the Spirits true identity, principally by listening to the Word of God in the Revelation of the Bible; to become clearly aware of his continuous, active presence in

the life of the Church, especially as you rediscover that the Holy Spirit is the soul, the vital breath of Christian life itself, through the sacraments of Christian initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist; to grow thereby in an understanding of Jesus that becomes ever deeper and more joyful and, at the same time, to put the Gospel into practice at the dawn of the third millennium. In this message I gladly offer you an outline for meditation that you can explore during this year of preparation. In this way you can test the quality of your faith in the Holy Spirit, rediscover it if it is lost, strengthen it if it has become weak, savour it as fellowship with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ, brought about by the indispensable working of the Holy Spirit. Never forget that the Church, in fact humanity itself, all the people around you now and those who await you in the future, expect much from you young people, because you have within you the supreme gift of the Father, the Spirit of Jesus. 2. The promise of the Holy Spirit in the Bible Attentive listening to the Word of God concerning the mystery and action of the Holy Spirit opens us up to great and inspiring insights that I shall summarize in the following points. Shortly before his Ascension, Jesus said to his disciples: And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you (Lk 24:49). This took place on the day of Pentecost when they were together in prayer in the Upper Room with the Virgin Mary. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the nascent Church was the fulfilment of a promise made much earlier by God, announced and prepared throughout the Old Testament. In fact, right from its opening

pages, the Bible presents the spirit of God as the wind that was moving over the face of the waters (cf. Gen 1:2). It says that God breathed into mans nostrils the breath of life (cf. Gen 2:7), thereby infusing him with life itself. After original sin, the lifegiving spirit of God is seen several times in the history of humankind, calling forth prophets to exhort the chosen people to return to God and to observe his commandments faithfully. In the well-known vision of the prophet Ezekiel, God, with his spirit, restores to life the people of Israel, represented by the dry bones (cf. 37:1-14). Joel prophesied an outpouring of the spirit over all the people, excluding no one. The sacred author wrote: And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh ... Even upon the menservants and maidservants, in those days, I will pour out my spirit (3:1-2).

...from page 7.. I didnt say anything about the award to anybody. Even these people who are staying here in Philippine Catholic Center do not know. To the Congregation, also I did not say anything and I just told that Ill have a short trip to some place but many newspaper companies called by phones so Here, we are suffering from lack of hands, we have piles of counseling cases, theres nobody except me who knows the works of Philippine Community from A to Z. So I cannot leave my desk but I have to have interviews and it presses me so hard. It seemed that she did not care about the interview at all but only concerned for the schedule of counseling. I told her loudly that remembering what she had done in Korea, we, Koreans must do kindness to Filipino people. She smiled like a little girl. Well, nowadays, we get great help from around us and there are many kinds of people helping us. The viewpoint about foreign workers also has changed much by TV programs such as, Asia, Asia, Love in Asia and etc. Only one thing! I wish Korean employers and coworkers do not beat Filipino workers by the reason that they are dull of hearing. Most of them are docile, tenderhearted and scared. They couldnt say anything at their factory and come here to appeal their pains. Listening to them makes me feel miserable. The weather in the Philippines is completely different from Korea. As the weather, the personality of Filipinos is very different from Koreans too. Koreans are quick-tempered but Filipinos are very composed and slow. Due to the hot weather, they like to have a nap and do not have much experience in lifting heavy things and dislike to do hard work so in many cases, they have very hard time in doing their job in Korea. Everyday, I scold them to move fast so that they could gain the good words from their employer and coworkers. They are slow and look lazy but most of them are Catholics and good-natured. Besides, they are passionate and emotional as Koreans.

Here in Korea, Filipino workers are far from the reach of God and their mothers. For them, Sr. Miguela Santiago is!
Most of the Filipino workers who come to the Philippine Center do not have any place to stay. The happiest thing for them here in the Community is to get a job and go to work. While, if the workers could not get a job and stay whole day long in the Center, it may press her. However, she encourages the workers saying that they can work hard when they get a job and just wait for a while. Unlike most of the people who lead this kind of community, Sr. Miguela do not ask help openly. She possesses the unique composure of the Filipino people. If there is rice only enough for 10 people but we have 15 visitors, what shall we do? Yes it is very simple we can share with the insufficient food. Whats giving her strong will and toughness? There are many people who help us she said. With her small frame, she devoted herself 50 years. Her devotion was not in vain. She said that there were many people giving help anonymously. Her pupils of early school of the Salesian Congregation are more than 60 years old already. Hungry, nowhere to go, the boys and girls followed around Sr. Miguela even after school. Now, they do not forget their schooldays and help in what Sr. Miguela is doing and donate without telling their names. There was one time when I experienced Korean kindness. About 7 years ago, a girl came to the Community. In the night she was pouring with sweat and appealed for help. She was in pain. We went to a hospital but they even did not examine her and told us that it was a simple stomach disorder. We didnt know what to do so we took her to Ehwa University Hospital at Dongdae-moon. Nurses and interns were very kind. Even the doctor with the highest position did not show any discrimination for Filipino people and decided immediate Caesarean operation. She got operation immediately. We did not even take any money for the medical treatment but they helped us so kindly. After discharge from the hospital we were ready to pay but the whole amount was refunded. We took the money again to the hospital but they refused to accept it saying that they did not want to charge because I was doing right work. Ehwa University Hospital belongs to the Protestant organization but through this incident, I changed my viewpoint about Protestantism. I have good relationship with many protestant people even today. Regardless of religion, if there is any occasion for me to help anybody, I think Ill help. It might be a distinguishing character of Koreans to help each other regardless of religion. Eum what happened to the baby which was born at that time? I heard it entered to an elementary school Several Filipino people gathered around the TV set. They were all workers who were still waiting to get jobs. Sr. Miguela said that many Korean dramas were played on Philippine TV therefore, many Filipinos like Korean movie stars and dramas very much. Everybody understood what Sr. Miguela said and smiled. Multinational meals is prepared here at the Philippine Center such as bread and coffee for breakfast and rice and side dishes for lunch. In an alley in Seongbuk-Dong, a small Philippines has built a nest, with the mixture of scolding of Sr. Miguela who is 99% Korean now, varied experiences of the Filipinos and their laughter and sigh altogether. Even during the interview, Sr. Miguela showed deep interest in asking me whether I found the way easily to get to the Center and whether I am married just like a Korean old lady. She was annoyed by the interview. But as it finished, she sighed with relief and came out of the door to send me off. There is an old saying, there are mothers because God cannot touch every corner of the world. Here in Korea, Filipino workers are far from the reach of God and their mothers. It was established to pay tribute to the memory of the founder of Canaan Farmers School, the late Pastor Yong-Ki, Kim who devoted whole his life to the development of rural communities and the enlightenment of Korean people. This Awards selects two people every year in and out of Korea who achieved outstanding works in various sector of social affairs and got respect from people for their personality. Poor people, hungry babies were all around, every corner of the district was slum in ruins. Only we could speak English so day by day, we visited the US Army base and got bread and milk to feed babies and visited Yeongdeung- po Municipal Hospital to take care of patients. There was no place for kids to go and they could get love and food at our congregation so they came to us everyday. We taught them Korean letters and English and we felt that education was urgently needed for them.

Most of the workers finished only elementary school at their home town and got a job in factories so they longed for schooling. Nobody could have so many pupils as me. It was hard time for everybody but when they finished middle school course, they could get double of their monthly salaries! They were so happy with the increased salary because they could help the living of their family. Nowadays, Korean economy has so much advanced that most of us do not even understand that we had so hard time only several decades ago. Now, time went by the economic situation of Korea and Philippines were reversed. Since the middle of 1990s, the problem of migrant workers in Korea became a hot social issue and she started new work without hesitation. Since 8 years ago, she formed Philippine community and regularly helping migrant workers, counseling, finding jobs, providing shelters. Actually, in the row house in Seongbuk-Dong which is used as Philippine Catholic Center, men workers are staying at the ground floor and on the 2nd floor is the office, 3rd floor is where the women and children are staying with free lodging and counseling. At the same time, many Filipino people began visiting Hyehwa-Dong Rotary which was near from Seongbuk-Dong. The main reason is for them to attend the Filipino Mass on Sundays at Hyehwa-Dong Church. Seoul archdiocese accepted the strong desire of the Filipinosmore than 90 % of them are Catholics, and arranged mass for Filipino people in Tagalog celebrated by Filipino Fathers at Hyehwa-Dong Church every Sunday from 1:30 pm till 3:00 pm. A Filipino market is opened there every Sunday and hundreds of Filipinos gather there. Sr. Miguela said smiling timidly that the Filipino community started in a small scale at Jayang-Dong, Kwangjin-Ku. A new nest was built at Seongbuk-Dong through the consistent help of Seoul archdiocese and also by the invisible numerous helping hands of generous sponsors. Besides, she was able to move herself to Sengbuk-Dong from ShinkilDong also by their help.

She forgot her mother tongue, Tagalog but she can speak Korean well including the dialects of Kyungsang province and Cheolla province. RP priests sent to heal 'sexual wounds' in California
MANILA, Philippines - The Missionary Society of the Philippines (MSP) has sent a second priest to its mission in the United States to fill up the need for pastors in the West Coast. But before leaving, Fr. Glenn Giovanni Jaron received instructions to help heal the wounds caused by sexual scandals of the clergy that took place in the US. A statement on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website (www.cbcpnews.com) Sunday said Jaron left July 11 to join Fr Alfie Africa Jr., MSP in the new US mission in the Diocese of Sacramento in California. Jaron worked for 15 years as a chaplain for overseas Filipino workers in Seoul, South Korea before getting his new post. In his farewell speech, Jaron said he has been given the chance to work in the US in the name of the Philippine Catholic Church and the MSP. For his part, MSP Father Moderator Fr. Soc Mesiona relayed the reason for the opening of the mission in the American soil. Mesiona reminded Jaron to be "sensitive" to the situation and needs of the Church in the US. He added Jaron should be part of the healing of the wounds in the wake of the sexual scandals of clergy that took place there. Africa was the first MSP missionary sent to that diocese since June 2007. Shortly after his arrival, Africa was appointed as the Parochial Vicar of St. Clare Parish in Roseville on July 18, 2007. On Sept. 27, 2007, he was appointed Parochial Vicar of two parishes, which are about four miles apart. The two parishes are St Patrick in Jackson, CA and Immaculate Conception in Sutter Creek, CA. MSP is a society of Filipino Catholic missionary priests, which is committed to share faith to the peoples in Asia and the rest of the world. Established in 1965 by the CBCP, the MSP serves as the official and key missionary arm of the Catholic Church of the Philippines. The MSP has been working in five continents and in 13 countries. In Asia, it has missions in Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. In Oceania, it works in Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, and American Samoa. Dollar crawls higher in Asia

TOKYO -- The dollar edged up against the yen and the euro in Asian trade Friday on growing concern that a US economic slump is curbing growth in Europe and Japan, dealers said. The dollar firmed to 107.27 yen in Tokyo morning trade from 107.19 in New York late Thursday. The euro slipped to $1.5672 from $1.5683, and to 168.08 yen from 168.12. The dollar was supported by a worsening outlook for the European economies, said Yosuke Hosokawa, head of forex at Chuo Mitsui Trust Bank. Downbeat surveys on eurozone business activity and German business sentiment dampened expectations that the European Central Bank will raise interest rates despite inflation worries, dealers said. But with the US economy also weak, "it is still difficult to turn bullish (positive) on the dollar," Hosokawa said. Concerns about the health of the US economy rose after US home sales fell another 2.6 percent in June to a 10-year low. Markets were waiting for the release later in the day of more US data, including existing home sales and a consumer sentiment index. Traders were also starting to look ahead to next week's July employment report for the US economy, which lost jobs for a sixth straight month in June. Investors showed some concern after Japan's core inflation rate hit a new decade high of 1.9 percent in June on soaring commodity costs, dimming the outlook for consumer spending. But the impact on the yen was muted because analysts do not expect Japan's central bank to raise its super-low interest rates from the current level of 0.5 percent any time soon, given the fragile health of the economy. Boardinghouse fire in SKorea kills 7, hurt 10

SEOUL, South Korea - A fire ripped through a boardinghouse in South Korea early Friday, killing seven people and injuring 10 others, an official said. The blaze occurred about 1:25 a.m. (1625 GMT) in Yongin, 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of the capital Seoul and it took firefighters 40 minutes to get it under control, fire official Yu Changseon said. The seven who died are believed to have inhaled toxic gas, he said. The fire also injured 10 others, three of whom were in serious condition. About 40 people were sleeping in the boardinghouse at the time. Fire authorities were not sure what caused the blaze. - AP
