It would be good to know what a recollection is, why is it needed and what is it for. Recollection Recollection, as understood in respect to the spiritual life, means attention to the presence of Recollection brings us closer to the Almighty God. God in the soul. CHEONAN Moyse International Migrants Community Recollection, Held

The International Migrants Community of Cheonan-Moyse had a Lenten Recollection on March 8, 2009 from 10:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon. The recollection was facilitated by Prof. Emely Dicolen-Abagat, Ph.D. It was attended by officers and members of the community. A number of non-Filipinos participated in the event. In the recollection the speaker emphasized the importance of spiritual renewal and rebirth not only during the season of Lent but all throughout the year. The Recollection was climaxed with the Eucharistic celebration held in the Church with the whole community

Hindi lamang mga Judio ang naakit kay Jesus bilang guro. Pati mga Griego ay nais siyang makita. Griego ang tawag sa kanila hindi lamang sapagkat mula sila sa bansang Grecia. Ang bansag na itoy tumutukoy rin sa lahat ng mga pagano na sumasamba sa ibat ibang mga diyus-diyosan. Layon ng mga Griegong naghahanap kay Jesus na makilalang lubusan si Jesus; marahil ay nabalitaan nila ang tungkol sa mga pangaral at himala ni Jesus. Itinaon nila ang paghahanap kay Jesus sa Pista ng Paskuwa na ginaganap sa Jerusalem. Malaking pista ito kayat makapal ang mga dumadayo sa lunsod. Karamihan sa mga nagsasadya sa Jerusalem ay mga mananampalatayang Judio at mga Griego mula sa ibat ibang dako ng daigdig. Ginugunita sa Pista ang mapaghimalang kamay ng Diyos na nagligtas sa mga Hebreo mula sa pagkabihag at pagkaalipin sa Egipto. Tupa ang karaniwang handog ng bawat nag-aalay sa Templo ng Jerusalem. Noong makipagtipan si Yawe kay Abraham, inutos ng Diyos ang pagpatay sa isang tupa. Biniyak ito at ang magkabilang bahagi ay inilatag na magkatabi. Nagiwan ng puwang sa gitna ng magkabilang bahagi, at doon lumakad ang Diyos. Malinaw ang kahulugan nito: Mangyari rin sa akin ang nangyari sa hayop na ito kung babaliin ko ang aking salita. Nakipagtipan ang Diyos kay Abraham at nangako si Yawe na siya ang magiging Diyos ng Israel, pati na rin ng buong sanlibutan. Itoy sumpang hindi niya babaliin. Bilang isang tapat na Judio, batid ni Jesus na malapit nang matupad ang pangakong binitiwan ng Diyos kay Abraham. Dumating na ang mga Griego, ang mga taga-labas ng Israel. Dumating na ang oras upang parangalan ang Anak ng Tao, wika ni Jesus. Ito ang hudyat ng katuparan ng misyon ni Jesus. Sa Pista ng Paskuwa, si Jesus ang maamong tupa o kordero ng Diyos na papaslangin. Sapagkat ito ang dahilan kung bakit ako naparitoupang danasin ang kahirapang ito. Ama, parangalan mo ang iyong pangalan. Para kay Jesus, mapaparangalan lamang ang pangalan ng Ama kung tutupad siya sa tungkuling iniatang sa kanyang mga balikat. Sa Ilog Jordan unang narinig ang tinig ng Ama na nangusap tungkol kay Jesus. Muli itong narinig sa Bundok ng Tabor nang magbagong-anyo si Jesus. Sa Ebanghelyo ngayong araw, nangako ang Ama kay Jesus: Pinarangalan ko na ito, at muli kong pararangalan. Simple ang paliwanag ni Jesus tungkol sa sasapitin niyang pag-aalay ng buhay sa krus. Inihahambing niya ito sa isang butil ng trigo na kailangang ibaon at mamatay saka lamang makapamumunga ng marami. Isang malaking eskandalo ang isang makasariling buhay. Ang taong labis na nagpapahalaga sa kanyang buhay ay mawawalan nito, wika ni Jesus. Sa kabilang banda, isang uri ng buhay lamang ang itinuturing ni Jesus na tunay na makahulugan. Ito ang buhay na laan para sa kapwa tao ngunit ang napopoot sa kanyang buhay sa daigdig na ito ay siyang magkakaroon nito sa kanyang buhay na walang hanggan. Tularan natin si Jesus sa pagpaparangal sa Ama. Pakinggan natin at sundin ang kalooban ng Diyos para sa atin, lalo na sa mga pagkakataong kailangan nating mamatay sa ating sarili tulad ng butil ng trigo upang makamtan natin ang panibagong buhay.

Christs Church, like himself, is both divine and human. It is divine in its constitution and doctrine, human in its members. The Church is infallible, but its members are not impeccable. Everyone, from the pope down to the lowliest of the faithful, may fall into sin. Christ, knowing the frailty of human nature, instituted the sacrament of penance to restore to his friendship those who might lose it by sin. Christ said: "They that are well have no need of a physician, but they that are sick" (Mark 2:17).

One day, the Lord spoke to the tree: Bamboo, I have a favor to ask of you. The bamboo bowed even lower: I am your servant. I will do whatever you ask. And the Lord asked it to surrender its branches and leaves, they are shading too much of the sunlight from my other shrubs and flowers. But Master, if you cut them away I shall not be so grand, and I will not be able to offer you such homage. You must trust me, declared the Lord. And the bamboo consented. A Few days later, the Lord stopped again before the tree: Bamboo, I have another favor to ask of you. I want you to surrender your coat of bark. It will make excellent gutters for water to reach my other shrubs and flowers. But Master, if you take it away I shall not be so strong, and I will not be able to offer you such homage. You must trust me, declared the Lord. And the bamboo consented. Then a few days late, the Lord stopped again before the tree: Bamboo, I have a final favor to ask of you. Let me cut you down very low, then there will be more nourishment of the soil available for my other shrubs and flowers. But Master, if you cut me I shall not be so tall, and I will not be able to offer you such homage. You must trust me, declared the Lord. And the bamboo consented. Some weeks later, the Lord stood before the small bamboo. Thank you, my trusting bamboo, he said. All my other shrubs and flowers are thriving because of your dedication. You have paid me your greatest homage. And I notice new buds shooting from you already. Our Gospel today opens with some Greeks who had come up to Jerusalem to worship. Philip brings them to Andrew and he brings them to Jesus. Jesus brings them right away into the heart of paradox and into the heart of truth. Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life destroys it, and whoever despises his life in this world keeps it for everlasting life. The Greek are taught the paradoxical wisdom of the Gospel which is also enshrined in the Chinese story. In all spheres of life, the secret of deeper joy is in delayed satisfaction. The psychologist Karl Jung says that

most mental sickness comes from the avoidance of legitimate suffering. The neurotic maneuvers we make to avoid the legitimate suffering that is part of our reality become much more painful than the original suffering would have been. Christ is an example of his own message. When I am lifted up from the earth, on the cross, I shall draw all things to myself. From a human point of view, he was a total failure. Everything he started seemed to collapse. His disciples betrayed or abandoned him. He was executed as a criminal. Yet, he was the one who rose from the dead and whose Reign still continues. To spend 20 to 30 minutes twice daily trying to repeat a word that is always being lost in a forest of distraction seems to be a futile and useless exercise. Yet, the Christian experience shows that from this death life comes. The person who meditates may feel that it is loss all the way. But then from time to time, little sprouts the little sprouts of what St. Paul calls the higher gifts of patience, understanding, forbearance, love will begin to appear and give a deeper joy than the much desired success that we all crave for. - (A Gospel reflection from Sundays into Silence)

Walang tigil ang Kanyang pag-anyaya sa ating lahat, Lumapit kayo sa akin, kayong lahat na napapagal at nabibigatan sa inyong pasanin, at kayoy pagpapahingahin ko. Pasanin ninyo ang aking pamatok, at mag-aral kayo sa akin; akoy maamo at mababang-loob, at makakasumpong kayo ng kapahingahan para sa inyong kaluluwa. Sapagkat maginhawang dalhin ang aking pamatok, at magaan ang pasaning ibibigay ko sa inyo. Tiyak na makakamtan ang pangakong ito ng Diyos kapag pinaunlakan ang paanyaya Niya sa ating lahat. Masasabing mabigat na pasanin ang paggawa ng hindi kalooban ng Panginoon. Dahil dito ay parang tayo na rin ang pumipili at nag-aatang sa ating balikat ng isang malaking tabla. Hindi nalulugod ang Diyos sa gawaing masasama. Subalit palaging nakatuon ang Kanyang mga kamay sa sinumang nais na iwanan ang kasalukuyang kinahuhumalingan. Masarap mamuhay ng malaya sa anumang bagay na hindi alinsunod sa nais Niya. Ilibing na sa limot ang madilim na tagpo ng iyong buhay. Kung paanong buhay ng Panginoong Jesus ang inialay, marapat lamang na magdudulot ito ng buhay para sa ating kaluluwa. Saksi ko ang langit at ang lupa na ngayoy inilahad ko sa inyo ang buhay o kamatayan, at ang pagpapala o sumpa. Kaya, piliin ninyo ang buhay para kayo at ang inyong lahi ay magtagal.(Deuteronomio 30:19) Sa baluktot na uri ng pamumuhay ng ilan ay lalo lamang idinidiin ang pako sa mga kamay ni Jesus. Ang panaghoy ni Kristo sa Krus ay buhay na walang hanggan para sa lahat dahil sa Kanyang pagliligtas at pagtubos. Sa pamamagitan ng Kanyang dugo ay hinuhugasan tayo sa ating karumihan. Ah, ngayon na marahil ang simula ng pagbabagong-buhay at hindi na ito dapat ipagpabukas pa!

In cases of fire, shipwreck, or sudden accident, when confession is not possible, a person by making an act of perfect contrition for his sins will be forgiven directly by God, but if he survives the danger, he must afterwards go to confession, because the act of contrition made in time of danger implied doing Gods will when possible, and once the danger is over, confession is possible. A person who falls into serious sin should make an act of perfect contrition at once, as this, with the intention of confessing later, remits the sin. Reasons for Confession The main reason for confession is that it is Gods ordinance. There are, however, several reasons besides Gods ordinance for this manner of regaining his friendship after it has been lost by sin. Confession causes a man to take inventory of his souls state. Businessmen, no matter how careful and systematic, take inventory of stock at stated times in order to see just how they stand. By confession the penitent examines the state of his soul in order to see how he stands with God. This examination of conscience may disclose a spiritual condition that warns him that unless he change his ways he may find himself on the broad road that ends in destruction. A person may gradually get accustomed to a sinful manner of living without realizing that he is in the grip of a dangerous enemy of salvation. Preparation for confession affords the sinner a spiritual mirror in which he may see his soul in all its deformity, and this sight should arouse him to a determination to mend his ways before it is too late. Scripture warns us that many fall away from virtue because they do not reflect on their evil course. Confession causes a man to reflect seriously on the state of his soul, and this alone would be a reason for the institution of t h i s s a c r a m e n t . Another reason for confession is that it affords the penitent a means of repairing the offense to God that sin has caused. Every mortal sin is, in effect, an act of pride. When a person commits a Volume 14 Issue 13

sin he violates one of Gods ordinances. God, as it were, stands before the sinner and says: "You shall not do this evil; if you do you shall not enter into eternal life." The sinner defies God and says by action: "Not thy will but mine be done." The sinner thus opposes his will to that of God, challenges his Maker, and in pride does as he pleases regardless of divine authority. Confession affords a means of atoning for this arrogance and pride. By kneeling down before a fellow man and disclosing the hidden sins of his soul to him, the penitent performs an act of humility, which is in direct contrast to the pride manifested in his defiance of Gods ordinance. It requires no little humility at times to reveal to the confessor the vile state of ones soul. But this very humility is partial atonement for the arrogance of sin and also acts as a preventive against sin thereafter. A third reason for the institution of confession is that it affords a practical means of exercising the virtue of faith. Every time the penitent goes to confession he declares by act, if not by word, that Christ is God. The penitent in going to confession does so because he believes that he who instituted this sacrament is what he declared himself to be, the Son of God. He believes on the word of Christ that when absolution is pronounced it is ratified in heaven. Confession, accordingly, keeps alive active faith, and with faith active a person is fortified against the evils and sinful a l l u r e m e n t s o f t h e w o r l d . The Catholic is assigned a penance when he receives absolution. Besides this sacramental penance there are various seasons and practices of penance in the Church. For it should be understood that the penance given in confession may or may not satisfy for the sins confessed. In the early ages of the Church the penances given were very severe, sometimes lasting for weeks, months, or years. The purpose was to offer satisfaction in this life for the chastisement still due to sin after the guilt was remitted.
