Using a stepwise discriminated analysis based on the death or survival of babies in the post-neonatal period, a risk scoring system was devised including the following factors: born in deprived area or not, birth weight, breast-fed baby or not, maternal age, and duration of second stage of labor. On the basis of their score, babies were assigned to a high-risk category and followed up more intensively. Of 2882 births in Nottingham in the first 5 months risks for morbidity in surviving infants, data on 390425 live births -deaths and 4327 surviving I-year-old children in 8 regions of Ac I examined.
