It is a course at an elementary level. The emphasis is put on vocabulary use, grammatical structures, and dialogue building. The grammar focuses on accuracy in grammar and sentence structures. Listening is used to bring a native speaker to the classroom as well as a means to learn pronunciation, grammar structures and vocabulary. The use of songs, games, projects and dialogue building is to enhance students' interest and motivation to study English further on.

Course objectives: By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. start, maintain, and close simple face-to-face conversation on a range of familiar subjects. 2. follow clear speech in everyday conversation, understand the main points in radio or on TV. 3. understand the plot of a simple story using the known structures, and recognise what the most important episodes and events are significant about them, will be able to understand the main points of short newspaper articles about topics that are familiar. 4. to write simple connected texts on a range of topics they are interested in and will be able to give personal views and opinions.

Course requirements: 1. Attend class regularly. 2. Complete all homework assignments. 3. Participate in all class activities. 4. Students are responsible for the material covered in a class.

CLASS SCHEDULE:

WEEK 1,2

Introduction to the course. Getting to know each other. Grammar and structures Present simple-positive, negative, interrogative, adverbs of frequency, the use of used to. Vocabulary words connected with leisure and everyday activities, days of the week, months. Reading: Rick's day, reading comic strips, answering questions and filling in. Speaking about one's favourite activities, typical ways of spending one's weekdays and weekends, things I used to do when I was 3,5,7, what activities are typical of different seasons, asking questions with how often..? Listening - Let's talk unit 1, listening and matching,giving short replies, listening and answering questions about daily routine. Writing- writing about one's favourite activities at home and outside, and whom students like doing these activities with. Projects- a presentation: My favourite day of the week, of the year, My favourite season. Test- vocabulary and grammar Grammar and structures have to, present continuous tense- affirmative, negative, interrogative, need to, want to, have to. Vocabulary adverbs, places, food and drinks. Reading a story about Roddy's chores, texts about food in different countries. Speaking talking about one's duties at home and at school, talking about one's favourite food, comparing and contrasting objects. Listening listening for a gist, listening to directions and drawing the route, listening to a recipe and guessing what dish is being described. Writing- one's recipe in steps using the adverbs fistly, then, etc Projects solving crossword puzzles, a project, games, unscramble exercises. Test- vocabulary and grammar test Grammar Learn the structures Where was it made? It was made in Italy,

What is it made of? It is mad of leather., past simple of the verb to be, Reading- reading and practicing talking about different pictures, Fun reading about Zed. Vocabulary countries, materials, shapes, the names of different objects and appliances used in the kitchen. Speaking talking about different things and their origin, talking about things and materials they were made of, making up the continuation of the story about Zed, talking about different countries' produce, choosing one thing and describing it. Listening- a story, listen to conversations and fill in the table, listening to people shopping and answering the questions Writing- describe objects in a written form. Projects a project, unscramble exercise, a crossword, a puzzle, a guessing game, a project my shop. Test- vocabulary and grammar test. WEEK 7,8 Grammar introduction to past simple, adjectives- comparative and superlative, the structures expressing likes and preferences. Vocabulary clothes and patterns vocabulary. Reading reading about kids' costumes for a party, reading the adverts. Speaking comparing 3 costumes, comparing and contrasting different cars, watches and other objects, Listening listening and guessing, listening and matching, listening and comparing, Writing-writing an advert. Projects a project my favourite clothes, my costume for the new year's party, games, puzzles, a crossword, Halloween costume shop, find the words puzzle, design a costume for a friend and draw it, a project making a store advert- opening one's own store. Test- vocabulary and grammar.

WEEK 9,10 Grammar past simple- affirmative, negative, interrogative, the past simple of to be, regular and some irregular verbs forms. Vocabulary weather adjectives, activities, adjectives, animals. Reading My last trip story. a text about the weather in Australia. Speaking talking to 3 people and filling in the table, talking about the weather in different countries and Lithuania, drawing the weather charts and presenting the weather forecast for the next week, talking about one's best and worst vacations, talking about different places of interest. Listening a story, listening for a gist, listening to understand the details, listening to different people's vacations. Writing- a weather forecast, my favourite vacations. Projects a project writing one's own travel diary, crosswords, puzzles, a game, My weather forecast presentation.

Test- weather vocabulary and grammar.

WEEK 11,12 Grammar there is/are, how far?, how long?, question words, asking directions questions, imperatives, suggesting and offering Vocabulary transportation and places, giving directions, the names of different places. Reading reading the dialogues, reading the comics, reading for general understanding. Speaking asking for the way and giving the way to a place, doing a role-play, Listening listening to the story, listening and labelling, listening and matching, listening and finding the way to a place. Writing- write the route to a chosen place on a map, writing direction to the hidden treasures. Projects understanding maps, asking and giving directions to different places, a project a Castle and its treasures, quizzes, a crossword, a puzzle.

WEEK 13 Grammar future simple- affirmative, negative and interrogative, expressing wishes and speculating about the future, question words. Vocabulary jobs and vocabulary connected with doing them. Reading reading about a girl's life in the future, reading about one's future plans, reading comic strips, reading conversations and putting them in order, Speaking speaking about one's fortune, speaking about Roddy's and his friends' plans for the future, doing role-plays, looking at the map of Paris and describing locations of different places on the map. Listening listening and labelling, listening to a story and answering questions. Writing- writing a letter to a fortune teller, writing about ones' fortune, writing about people's life in the future in general, writing an itinerary with a a friend before visiting a place. Projects the future , entangling the letter to a fortune teller, Making one's fortune project, a role-play:students imagine they are fortune tellers and read their friend's fortune, discussing one's future, puzzles, role-plays, Test- vocabulary and grammar test.
