Strong market share for Isuzu
suzu Trucks has revealed that it has achieved 23 per cent market share for the first half of 2011. This brings Isuzu to almost 10 per cent ahead of its nearest competitor. Isuzu obtained a 36.9 per cent YTD share of the light duty segment more than 17 per cent higher than its nearest competitor in this field. Isuzu captured a 37.9 per cent market
share in the medium duty sector and a 8.2 per cent share in the heavy duty segment. IAL Director and Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, said that while Australia had coped in the turbulent economic environment, it is not immune to the recent lull affecting commercial vehicle sales around the world.
Yes, its been a challenging period but Isuzu has consolidated its number one position in Australia and maintains a healthy total market share, Mr Taylor said. We are now well-placed to build our share in all market segments as demand for commercial vehicles slowly but steadily increases.
ever to be released by Mack Trucks. A higher capacity Mack mDRIVE 12 speed automated manual transmission will also be offered to coincide with the MP10 release. This will be standard with the 685hp rating. Mack said that this is the
only transmission strong enough to handle the MP10s 2300 lb-ft torque output. These new engines will be available for order from 12 September 2011, with the first customer vehicles to be delivered by mid 2012.

Truck sales down for quarter
igures released by the Truck Industry Council (TIC) for the second quarter of 2011 have revealed an 11% drop when compared to the same period last year. According to the T-Mark truck sales database which compiles all trucks sold in the Australian market that comply with ADR, and is owned and compiled by the TIC, 7510 truck sales were recorded during the April to June period. This is in comparison to 8443 in 2010. For the quarter, June showed the
biggest decrease in sales, recording the lowest June sales since 2004. 2960 units were sold during June 2011. This is compared to 3627 in June 2010 (an 18.4% drop), 3671 in June 2008 (pre-Global Financial Crisis) and 3718 in 2007. In the light duty segment, sales for June were 5.1% lower than last year and the medium duty sector saw sales down by 9.8%. The heavy duty segment was the hardest hit, with sales dropping by 30.5% when compared to June 2010.
Despite this slump, TIC President Phil Taylor is confident that sales will increase during the second half of the year. TIC members are reporting reasonable order books, and while some truck brands and models have been in short supply, the supply outlook into the second half of 2011 is looking positive. With interest rates remaining on hold for now, we are hopeful buyers will begin to return to the market, said Mr Taylor.
report by the Scania Transport Laboratory believes it will be possible to reduce fuel consumption for heavy long haul trucks to below 20L per hundred kilometres. The laboratory says the right vehicle with an uncompromising focus on driver behaviour and using systems like the computer-based Scania Driver Support system will reduce fuel consumption to very low levels.
On our best trips between Sweden and the Netherlands, we have reached 18.2L per hundred kilometres, a level that many say is impossible, said Anders Gustavsson, Managing Director of the Scania Transport Laboratory. The trucks used by the Transport Laboratory are used to haul freight and components between the Scania production units in Sodertalje in Sweden and Zwolle in the
Netherlands. Using 65 drivers, 20 prime movers and 75 trailers, the operation also uses competitor trucks to get real world comparisons. Apart from consistent driver training that reinforces good driver behaviour to maximise fuel use, the fleet also uses high rear axle gear ratios to reduce rpm levels at cruising speed and have fitted boat tail air deflectors to the rear of the trailers.

Caltex to boost supply in SA
altex Managing Director and CEO Julian Segal has announced that the company has agreed on the key terms of a plan to boost the supply and reliability of fuel to South Australia and support the states resources sector as it continues to grow over the next decade. According to Mr Segal, the proposed 25-year deal with Terminals Pty Ltd would almost double the states fuel storage capacity. He said that this was the largest and latest in a series of commitments that Caltex has made to its supply chain. This is a demonstration of our commitment to ensuring greater fuel supply reliability for Adelaide and supply continuity for Caltexs growing list of commercial customers across the state, said Mr Segal. This project is part of Caltexs
overall commitment to develop infrastructure and capability to meet Australias growing transport, agricultural and mining fuel needs. The plan will see Caltex become a foundation customer of the new fuel storage terminal to be built at Adelaides Outer Harbour. Currently, Terminals Pty Ltd is awaiting formal approval of a Development Application to begin stage one of the terminal. Upon completion, the terminal will hold unleaded grades 91, 95 and 98 as well as diesel, biodiesel and ethanol. Subject to regulatory approvals, construction of the facility is due to commence later in the year, with the $80 million first stage set to open in 2013. Initially, this will provide 85 million litres of new storage capacity for
South Australian fuel supply and could eventually expand to 135 million litres. Caltex National Manager Distribution, Mike Raleigh, commented, Caltexs current fuel capacity in Adelaide is limited by available tank capacity and by congestion at the existing Inner Harbour berth due to occupancy levels rapidly approaching their upper limits. These capacity constraints have been a major factor in a number of fuel shortages affecting Adelaide and the state of South Australia over the past few years. Moving to a new terminal, which will be serviced by a new Outer Harbour berth, will give South Australians much greater fuel supply certainty and also improve safety.
by Transport and Main Roads Traffic Management Centres in Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane, allowing operators with access to roads throughout Queenslands north to act quickly and alert motorists when there are condition changes, said Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace. The northern regions of Queensland can be heavily impacted during wet a season, which plays havoc on travel time and road conditions for all motorists. This important safety project is a great example of our commitment to
effectively managing road closures during the wet season. The new signs will allow traffic management centres to provide real time road condition information. The great thing about being able to remotely control the signs is that they can be changed from a number of locations and we will have access to update motorists twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, said Mr Wallace. These new signs were funded by the Federal Governments Nation Building Program and were delivered by the state government.

Xenon
This is a natural inert gas that is used to create a level of pressure within the bulb. Not all Xenon lights are H.I.D. Dont confuse H.I.D. lights which use a mixture of Xenon gases, with Xenon Globes that still use an internal filament and are not H.I.D. lights even though they come in a range of colour temperatures and give a bluish light. True H.I.D. lights run at approximately 23,000 Volts. Advantages of H.I.D. over conventional halogen lighting H.I.D. lights are up to three times brighter; Provide superior light intensity close to daylight; Last up to nine times longer than conventional halogen lighting; Use less power to operate once warmed up; Illuminate the road with better contrast and lifelike tones of color. For further information on specific brand and model features, or to find your nearest ALLRig Dealer, phone 1800-ALLRIG (1800-255-744).
Warm Up
A cold H.I.D. lamp is unable to produce its full light capacity instantly because the temperature and pressure in the inner arc chamber requires time to reach its full light output. For safety reasons many of the H.I.D. lights available have a back up system that operates during start up and re-starts to guarantee lighting during these periods.
Ballasts
H.I.D. lamps have special electrical requirements that must be supplied by a ballast. The ballast regulates the light start up and constant power output and must be specially designed for the lamp type and wattage being used.
