Project Title: OPTICAL FETAL HEART RATE DETECTION SYSTEM INTRODUCTION: Fetal heart rate detection is the primary methodology for antenatal determination of fetal well-being, assisting in the identification of potential hazards such as hypoxia and distress to the fetus. The expected outcome of this early detection is a reduced risk of fetal morbidity and mortality. Currently FHR can be detected by using Doppler ultrasound, where the standard pre-delivery test of fetal health is the fetal non-stress test (NST). These test are routinely performed at the hospital, generally with continuous wave instruments. Although current ultrasonic FHR detectors are becoming less expensive and bulky, accurate sensor alignment and some degree of expertise are still required to correctly operate them. Moreover, they are sensitive to motion artifact and finally complete safety of long term exposure of the fetus to ultrasound wave has yet to be established, therefore only short term testing is actually practiced. An alternative to ultrasound is using fetal electrocardiogram. In invasive FECG uses scalp electrode and reserved for pre- delivery conditions. For noninvasive 3-4 leads are used. The FECG is generally utilized later in pregnancy due to its low signal-to -noise ratio (SNR).

OBJECTIVES A low-power technique is proposed based on PPG.A beam of LED is shone to abdomen and therefore modulated by blood circulation of both mother and fetus whereas max. Penetration is achieved. Mixed signal is processed by adaptive filter with maternal index finger PPG as reference input. Fetal signal and fetal heart can be determined. Low noise amplification and synchronous detection ensures conservation of the information with minimum noise power.

METHODOLOGY A low-power (<68mV) optical technique is proposed for transabdominal FHR detection using near-infrared photoplesthymography (PPG).A beam of IRLED (890nm) propagates through to the maternal abdomen and fetal tissues, resulting in a mixed signal detected by low-noise detector situated at a distance of 4cm.After synchronous detection, the mixed signal is processed by an adaptive filter to extract the fetal signal, whereas PPG from the mothers index finger is the reference input. OFHR detection system which has very low power (<68mV) IR light, low cost and a silicon detector is used. Digital synchronous detection and adaptive filtering techniques implemented. FHR can be determined using adaptive and digital synchronous techniques with acceptable accuracy, compared to Doppler ultrasound. . WORK PLAN In this project we are detecting the heart rate using

photoplesthysmography technique. The digital filtering, demodulation and signal estimation are performed in digital domain. Software implementation which consists of generating a modulation signal, a synchronous detection algorithm, down-sampling, high-pass filtering and adaptive noise cancelling. The base paper of this project is taken along with the assisted papers, components will be purchased within this month so that the project will be completed by 5-6 months. BUDGET
