TOPLUM GNLLLER VAKFI SUMMARY OF THE ANNUAL REPORT 1 JANUARY 31 DECEMBER 2010

Toplum Gnllleri (Community Volunteers) network has increased to 94 TOG Youth organizations in either at university campuses or outside the universities in 60 cities of Turkey and Northern Cyprus. These youth organizations have voluntarily carried out projects in their local environment. The number of project volunteers has risen to 23,880. Young Community Volunteers implemented 794 local, national or international projects that reached out to 235,349 people. Total of voluntary hours spared for these activities totaled to 1,103,386 hours. The total value added to GNP by minimum wage per hour has been 3.685.309 TL (2,385,313 in $ ) Value Added calculated by minimum wage (TL) 3.685.309

TOGs activities were spread in a variety of areas including renovation of schools in the disadvantageous districts, support to disabled people, health education programs, entrepreneurship training for youth, democracy and human rights trainings, reproductive health trainings, environment projects, campaigns and trainings against discrimination, activities that raise awareness on the disabled peoples rights projects, creation of internship positions, scholarships and mentoring services for young people. Young Community Volunteers from TOGs local organizations gather twice a year in TOG Youth Council. This gathering is a meeting point for representatives from TOG youth organizations. They share their experiences and ideas of their projects and shape the future of TOG. Also, every year they vote and elect their representatives to take place in the Board of Directors of TOG. The 15th TOG Youth Council took place in Sakarya between February 1821 and 16th TOG Youth Council took place in Bolu between September 16-18.

Istanbul Pink House, Samsun Pinhole and Samsun 19 Mayis are 3 Youth Centers where young people can meet, create ideas and share their skills and knowledge and learn. In the three 1

Youth Centers a variety of projects, activities and trainings continued to take place for or with young people aged between 15 and 29. In TOGs youth centers, the Young Space project has been run in partnership with Sabanc Foundation, and TOG developed its youth center model and created a book and a programme to support local administrations and NGOs in the area of youth centers. For increasing the capacity of project development and implementation of young community volunteers 30 volunteer youth leaders have mentored TOG youth organizations. In total 35 Local Needs Analysis Meetings and 510 field visits are realised in 2010. TOG has projects called TOG ATAK, in which young people from several local TOG youth organizations meet for creating awareness on social issues. In these projects, young people from different cities and regions gather to perform a project in a specific location for 2-3 days. TOG implemented 10 TOG ATAK and 23 local TOG ATAK projects on different issues such as coastal cleaning, school renovations, global warming, cultural heritage, human rights and workshops in volunteerism and civil society. 6 TOG ATAK projects were realized with the partnership of Mavi Jeans. In summer, young people realized 7 Summer Projects. Young people from different backgrounds met in Samsun, Antalya, Istanbul, anlurfa, Izmir, Hakkari, Bergama projects and realised one travelling Project in Ankara, Kayseri, Sivas, Malatya ve Diyarbakir. These projects were on the promotion of local culture, educational support for children, youth deliquency, youth participation and environment. Organizing 2 training of trainers (Democracy and Our Rights and Reproductive Health Peer Education) 40 Community Volunteers began to conduct trainings on the field. Also considering 422 local and national trainings, in which 965 trainers and 8,785 young participants were involved, 78,558 volunteer hours were generated in 3014 training hours. These trainings were mainly focused on Civil Society and Voluntary Work, Human Rights, Social Rights of young people, Health Literacy, Reproductive Health, Need Analysis, Project Management, Training of coordinators and Team Work. Mentorship Project has continued its activities with 65 mentors and 106 mentees. Besides providing guidance to youngsters by matching them one-to-one with adult volunteers, the project also organized events which helped to increase the interaction among them. In the context of TOG Internship program, 51 corporations provided internship to 55 young community volunteers. TOG continues to give scholarships to 601 university students all around Turkey.

TOG celebrated Alternative Youth Week between May 15-22 including different youth friendly activities such as panels, workshops, concerts, outdoor festivals, which is organised by young people themselves. The Alternative Youth Week tries to create an alternative to the official youth week designed by public authorities, which is full of elements of nationalism, militarism and gerontocracy.

Living Library 2010 practices, funded by the European Capital of Culture Agency, have been realized in February and May during !f Istanbul and Theatre Festival in cooperation with TOG and stanbul Bilgi University Youth Study Unit. Hosting its readers for five days, Living Library books have been borrowed 531 times and reached 728 readers. In order to extend the 2

impact, stanbul Bilgi University Youth Studies Unit, Community Volunteers from Diyarbakr, Eskiehir, Adana and stanbul and AEGEE organized a Capacity Improvement Training with 20 participants from stanbul. White Hats project supported by Janssen-Cilag aiming to establish and develop communal relations based on love, respect, tolerance and cooperation through raising awareness about social peace started in December 2009. During 2009-2010 periods the project reached 84 young community volunteers from 11 TOG Youth Organizations, 522 children, 110 parents in 6 cities. The total number of people profiting from the project- directly and indirectly - is 2894. On November and December, the projects Parent Seminars were finalized and 153 parents were reached. With the involvement of local organizations, the project application guide was revised in the evaluation meeting on October. Solar Generation project, developed by TOG youth organizations with the contribution of Greenpeace, has started in Diyarbakr, Trabzon, Eskiehir, Antalya, Kocaeli, stanbul and zmir as part of the Global Environment Fund- Small Grants Program run by the UNDP. Project has been initiated in Diyarbakr, Trabzon, Eskiehir, Antalya, Kocaeli, stanbul and zmir. With each local organization in the seven cities composing 15 people, the overall number in the project team totalled 105 people. My School My Future, an education project aiming to promote school attendance and prevent drop out without diploma, started in March 2010. The project partners are ING Bank, TOG and Istanbul Bilgi University Childrens Study Unit. Western Union also provides financial support to the My School My Future project. 117 community volunteers from 5 universities and 28 ING Bank employees took active role in this project and touched directly and indirectly 928 children and 465 parents in 5 cities between March-June 2010. Let the Tortum Cascade; Let Nature be Restored is held by Atatrk University TOG Student Club to protect Tortum Cascade, that was announced as one of the 200 vulnerable ecologic areas in the world in 2000. It is in the west corner of the Caucasus Ecologic Region. This project was initiated on November 2010 with the support of The Life Plus Foundation Youth Program. It aims to facilitate ecologic tourism in the Tortum Cascade and with the cooperation of local administrations, public and civil society organizations and to increase awareness both on local and national level. The Think Purple! Project was implemented with stanbul Bilgi University Youth Studies Unit by financial support of the Development Marketplace 2009 Competition, World Bank. Within the Project activities, Anadolu, Erciyes, Gazi, Ege, Yldz, Kocaeli, Dokuz Eyll, Tokat, Samsun, Biga, Pamukkale TOG youth organizations monitored the gender equality at their local TOG groups and also the foundation as well. Gender trainings were realized in Kilis, zmir and at Pink House and Short Wave Youth Centers. Gender Equality Manual was published which contains the method of monitoring, the outputs and the training programme. The Magnifier to the Address project was implemented with the partnership of stanbul Bilgi University Youth Studies Unit and NGO Training and Research Unit and by the financial support of Delegation of the European Union to Turkey and National Endowment for Democracy. Within the project, the local civil monitoring groups were formed in Adana, Aksaray, Ankara, Edirne, Erzurum, Hatay, stanbul, zmir, Kars, Kilis, Kocaeli, Konya, Malatya, Mula, Samsun and Trabzon monitored the availability, accessibility, quality and efficiency of youth services that must be provided for young people at the locals. In 2010, the local groups monitored the services of youth centres of municipalities, European Union Offices of

the universities/governorships, presidency of health, culture and sport at universities, youth assemblies of city councils and dormitories and 171 monitoring visits were realized. It is planning to prepare a report with the data from local monitoring visits and the report will be shared with the related public bodies, NGOs and universities by a lobby marathon in Ankara. A documentary, a final report and a project manual will be prepared. TOG Assessment Study that aimed to realize the complementary impact of the TOG at nation-wide was published. The research was completed by the participation of 2.242 young people from 73 cities and 117 universities and the TOG assessment on individual and social development were measured. The research that is the output of the basis of existence, mission and vision of TOG, was targeted to confirm at which fields and at what extents the active participation to civil society creates a change on young people. The difference was measured between volunteers and their peers by the time duration of two years. TOG participated to The Strategic Paper on Social and Personal Development of Youth advisory group meetings organized by the State Ministry responsible for Youth which aims the development of a new youth structure in Turkey. Faruk Nafiz zak, the State Minister responsible for Youth and his advisors visited TOG. The opinions and suggestions about the developments in youth field were shared. The institutional texts were published about Free and Democratic University, The Accommodation Conditions of Young People at Dormitories and The Developments in Agenda Related to University Students. TOG continues to be at the Advisory Council on Youth of the Council of Europe. 41 young people participated to the international training and youth exchange projects. TOG as the sending, hosting and coordinating organization for European Voluntary Service (EVS) continued to send young people through EVS. 23 young community volunteers had the chance to do EVS. TOG assisted the realization of the Turkeys leg of YEU Academy Project as a member of international non governmantal youth organization Youth for Exchange and Understanding. Within the scope of the project non formal education trainings were organized by the trainers expert on the fields of media, new technologies and intercultural dialogue in 5 countries Portugal, Cyprus, Estonia, Poland and Turkey. 18 young people participated to the project from each country. Turkeys leg of the project realized in between 17-20 June. A documentary film Road to Understanding was shot during the project. TOG partnering with Uan Sprge and Heartland International provided 15 young leaders working at the youth, environment, women civil society organizations to take part at the exchange project From The Ground Up: Building Civil Society Organizations' Capacity to Succeed realized in Chicago and Washington between 7-27 April and also 15 young leaders from Chicago came to stanbul and Ankara between 15-22 october for the project. 4 young people have come to do EVS in TOG from Denmark, Italy, Spain and Latvia. 7 young people interned at the International Relations Department from Germany, United States and Lithuania.

In the Worlds oldest motor race Peking-Paris Rally, the rally drivers of Anadol A1; Ahmet ngn and Erdal Tokcan, who raced for the Community Volunteers youth, brought the second prize to Turkey. Within the context of Give Way to Education Project to support the fellowships of the youth Community Volunteers, Ahmet ngn and Erdal Tokcan passed the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. With this Project, the 4 years fellowships of 76 university students were paid. The Peking-Paris Rally Project, which is arranged since 103 years, today stil takes attention of the international public as being in the most interesting organisations. Anadol, which is the car that raced for the Give Way to Education Project in this organization, is maintained with the support of the main sponsor lker, and the sponsors: Ford Otosan, Otoko, Pressan, eta, Eresinler, Gantek, Mart, Claude Nahum, Akbank, Lassa, Garanti Bank, Yap Kredi, Adios, Akkk, Blackout, Borusan Holding, Calyon Bank, Deniz Bank, Finans Bank, Dominos Pizza, Eczacba, Bank, Karadeniz Holding, Kumport, Migros, Pegasus, TAV, Alcatel-Lucent, Remondis, iecam, Serdar Bostanc, Dita, R2D2, Jingleturk and Classic Automobile Club. All the earnings from the sponsors and project were donated to the Community Volunteers. In the TOG Bazaar organization, 250.000 TL resource was purchased for the projects of the Community Volunteers. The organization was in Esma Sultan Mansion in May, 2010. Eightysix associations had fairstead in the organization and they show their products over 1500 visitors. Heartfelt Conversations were arranged by the Community Volunteers and Yap Kredi Crystal Card to support the social responsibility projects of the youth and all precede was moved into the Community Volunteers. Heartfelt Conversations hosted many important guests in the year 2010. Arzu Kaprol advertised her Re-Fine 2011 Spring-Summer Collection in Paris Fashion Week and after that she introduced her new collection in stanbul to the advantage of Comunity Volunteers youth in Pera Palace, stanbul. The special designs of the Re-Fine Collection were sold in auction and the income was donated to the Community Volunteers. In the campaign of "Young People in Community Service", which had began in 2005, 22 associations supported the projects of Community Volunteers with their regular monthly contribution in the year 2010. Personal Support Campaign Valuing The Young People was started in 2010 by Community Volunteers. This Campaign provides an alternative social network, supports individual development of youth, provide self declare opportunity to the youth even outside the school with the lifelong learning approach and enable them to have self life practice.Within the context of this campaign, individual contributors made difference in life of a young person with 280 TL in a year. They support the youth in being more successful in self Express, more self-confident, and active citizens, who is taking initiative in problem solving. In the year 2010, 548 young people were supported by Valuing The Young People Campaign. In the year 2010, 433 news in the print media, 101 news in the visual media, 567 news in the electronic media and totally 1101 news were published about Community Volunteers and its projects. Besides, the activities of the Community Volunteers were shared with the community by using different TV and radio programs.
