CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1-1 . General
For information pertaining to nomenclature, abbreviations, publications improvements, and other general
information, refer to TM 9-1425-381-10. For a listing
of forms, records, and reports pertaining to materiel
covered in this manual, and instructions for their use,
refer to TM 38-750.

1-2. Purpose
This manual is for the use of the HLT, VLT, and OST
operators during tactical operation of the PERSHING la
Field Artillery Missile System. It may be used in conj unction with TM 9-1425-381-10, which contains procedures in abbreviated tabular form.

1-3. Scope
The procedures in this manual are primarily for operation under usual conditions. For operation under
extreme environmental conditions, refer to TM
9-1425-381-10. TM 9-1425-381-10-2 through TM
9-1425-381-10-7 and TM 9-1425-381-10-9 contain
procedures to be performed by other personnel.

1-4. Use of Manual

Except for this chapter, paragraphs are not numbered sequentially. The method of numbering has
been selected so that the paragraph numbers in this
manual correspond to the paragraph numbers in TM
9-1425-.3-81-10. Thus, if tables in TM 9-1425-381-10
are being used, and details are required, it is only
necessary to note the paragraph number in the appropriate column of the table heading, and then refer to
the same paragraph number in this manual for details.
Where references are made to tables, figures, and
appendixes,
refer to those portions of TM
9-1425-381-10.

CAUTION: When lifting theodolite, do

not grasp large side of alidade (left.

this caution will place undue pressure
on collimation lever and make readjustment of collimation lever necessary.
( 12)

Lift theodolite from base assembly by

grasping small side of alidade (righthand axle bearing) with one hand, while
steadying theodolite with other hand.

Loosen horizontal clamp knob and turn

three leveling screws fully counterclockwise; then perform fine leveling as
follows:
(a) Rotate alidade until axis of plate
level is parallel to a line through any
two of the three leveling screws.
( b) Turn these two screws clockwise
two complete turns.
( c) Center bubble in level by rotating these two leveling screws equally
in opposite directions.
(d) Rotate alidade through 1,600
mils (90), and center bubble in level
by rotating third leveling screw.
( e) Repeat (a), (c), and (d) above
until bubble comes to rest centered in
its via I in both of these positions.
( f) Rotate alidade through 3,200
mils (180) from its position in (a)
above; bubble should remain centered
in its vial. If bubble comes to rest off
center, adjust plate level as prescribed
in TM 9-1430-381-14.

( 8)

Repeat positioning and leveling operations as required.

( 9)

Request OIC to verify VLT level.

NOTE. Insure that VLT remains level
during laying procedures; if not, repeat
laying procedures.

Loosen VLT telescope and horizontal

OST telescope can be seen through
VLT telescope. Tighten clamp knobs.
NOTE. When setting scales using
horizontal drive knob or azimuth screw,
always approach setting by rotating knob

clockwise to approach proper setting.

Allow OST OP to a line on VLT autoreflector.

Repeat (4) and (5) above until autoreflector remains properly centered in

azimuth. Tighten clamp knob.

( 2)

Verify that micrometer knob is set correctly, and rotate azimuth screw until
horizontal circle scale indicates exact
value of firing azimuth.

( 3)

Loosen telescope clamp knob and rotate telescope to approximate position

Adjust telescope focusing tube until

autoreflector is sharply defined in
reticle.

(1)

When LAY PLATF indicator flashes, set

and hold PLATF CONTROL switch to
appropriate L or R position and rotate
VLT altitude screw until a utocollimation
is achieved (autoreflector is centered on
single vertical reticle line, and edges of
a utoreflector coincide with intersections
of double vertical reticle lines and horizontal reticle lines). If a faster ST-120
rotational speed is required to achieve
autocollimation, proceed to (2) below;
otherwise, proceed to ( 3) below.

( 2)

Press RESET switch, set and hold PLATF

CONTROL switch to appropriate L or R
position until autoreflector is approximately centered in reticle, and proceed
to (1) above.

( 3)

When satisfied that autoreflector will remain in alinement without further adjustment, request OIC to verify autocollimation and horizontal scale setting
to FA; notify supervisor that MONITOR
switch can be pressed.
NOTE. When MONITOR switch is
pressed (MONITOR indicator lights and

LAY PLATF indicator goes out}, the 60second optical monitoring period is
initiated. During this time, the autoreflector is lighted for 55 seconds and
then flashes for 5 seconds.

NOTE. Angulardisplacement (drift) of

ST-120 may be estimated by using the
lateral distance between the double
vertical reticle lines as a reference. The
angle represented by this distance is
approximately 0.2 mil.
( 4)

When directed by supervisor, press

MONITOR switch, and monitor ST-120
to determine if its drift rate is within
0.1 mil in 60 seconds (vertex of autoreflector remained within double vertical
reticle lines); if ST-120 drift rate is
out of to Iera nee, notify supervisor.

NOTE. After monitoring period ends,

approximately 90 seconds will elapse
before LAY PLATF indicator starts flashing; periodically observe autoreflector
to determine that drift does not exceed
0.2 mil outside of either double vertical
reticle line during this time. (If RESET
switch has been pressed, or during
horizontal lay recycle, LAY PLATF indicator starts flashing without delay at
end of optical monitoring period.)

reticle line, notify supervisor, press RESET switch, and proceed to sequence 5
(1) above; if ST-120 drift is within
tolerance, notify supervisor that COMPLETE switch can be pressed.
NOTE. If directed by supervisor, again

drift rate is out of to Iera nee, notify
supervisor, press RESET switch, and
proceed to sequence 5( 1) above; if
drift is within tolerance, notify supervisor that COMPLETE switch can be
pressed.
