Synopsis

Rationale for City & Guilds 2393-10 Course The City & Guilds 2393-10 course provides practising domestic electricians an understanding of how electrical installations in dwellings must comply with all relevant Building Regulations. It is suitable for those working in the building trades and others who require a working knowledge of how electrical installations in dwellings can affect the building construction. The candidate will be able to:

Describe the Building Regulations in terms of scope, purpose and structure State the type of building work that is: o o Notifiable and Non-notifiable

Identify relevant Approved Documents Describe how Building Regulations are enforced Identify the role of Building Control Services by the: o o Local Authority Building Control Services Approved Inspectors Building Control Services

Identify methods that electrical installations must comply with for the following Approved Documents: o A, Structure: Notches and holes in floors and roof joists o B, Fire Safety: Fire alarm and fire detection systems Recessed luminaires and other electrical equipment installed in ceilings and maintenance of breaches of required fire barriers Lighting of escape routes o E, Resistance to the Passage of Sound: Recessed luminaires and other electrical equipment installed in ceilings containing sound absorbent material and maintenance of breaches of sound absorbent material following installation of equipment o o F, Ventilation, including extraction rates and the interaction of mechanical extract ventilation and combustion appliances L1, Conservation of Fuel and Power: Internal lighting External lighting Suitable types of lamps o M, Access to, and use of, buildings: Mounting heights for electrical equipment

The 20-question multi-choice exam lasting 40 minutes is set and marked by City & Guilds, but run by Trans-Euro Engineering Services Ltd in Towcester. Successful learners can progress to C&G 2382-10 17 edition Requirements for Electrical Installations and C&G 2392-10, Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification of Electrical Installations.

Synopsis

Administrative Arrangements The course and the exam are normally held at Trans-Euros premises at 186 Watling Street, Towcester, but the location can be at client premises by prior arrangement. Normal times of attendance are from 09:00 to 17:00, with lunch from 12:15 to 13:00. Refreshment breaks are taken as necessary during the morning and afternoon. Towcester is centrally placed and is conveniently accessible by road, rail and air. Accommodation and parking are easily arranged. Full details are available from the Course Secretary. Participants with special needs should advise the Course Secretary 21 days before the start of the course. See Equal Opportunities, below. Safety Warning Note that the Trans-Euro emergency assembly area is the Magistrates Court car park, across the main A5 Watling Street. This is a busy trunk road therefore extreme caution is required. Course Framework The course is divided into 2 sections: General requirements of the Building Regulations in relation to electrical installations in dwellings Methods of compliance with the six parts of the Building Regulations most relevant to electrical installations in dwellings

Opportunities will be provided during the course to answer practice exam questions.

Assessments The assessment questions in the exam will seek to examine the objectives listed under the syllabus topic headings with the percentage weightings shown below: Section 1 2 Topic General requirements of the Building Regulations in relation to electrical installations in dwellings. Complaints and Appeals Any complaint or appeal should be made in the first instance direct to the Trans-Euro employee involved. It should be escalated to the assessor or internal verifier/quality assurance coordinator if satisfaction is not obtained. City & Guilds will not accept complaints or appeals made directly to them unless this process has been exhausted. The full company Appeals Policy is available on request from the Centre Secretary.
