LED The light source of the future

Interview Lighting designer Torsten Braun talks about the future of LED lighting

Everyone is talking about lighting solutions that use LEDs. What, in your opinion, are the advantages of this latest-generation light source? These light sources have a very long service life and are efficient. Because they give off relatively little heat, they can be placed close to an object or even in an object. What are the main application areas where you use LED luminaires? To set facades centre stage in outdoor areas. For illuminated surfaces and decorative light lines in indoor locations and, nowadays, more and more for indirect illumination in lighting coves, e.g. in shopping malls. Do LEDs also have weaknesses, and what do you think they are? LEDs had unsatisfactory colour rendition characteristics until relatively recently. There are also huge differences in LED quality, and you get what you pay for. If an installation is expected to operate profitably over a relatively long period, uniform LED grades or binnings must be selected. Maintenance and replacement of faulty components must be addressed and clarified. High standards, in terms of delivery reliability and vertical range of manufacture, must be applied in order to vet potential suppliers. And how will the application areas for LEDs change in the future? Where do you see the biggest growth potential? LEDs will first replace todays established light sources in accent lighting, then they will gradually find their way into wide-area lighting, starting with luminous ceilings. Colourful lighting using light emitting diodes will become less important. I dont think LEDs will replace all current light sources, after all, the incandescent bulb didnt do away with the candle. The first thing they will do is to create new ways of using light. The full potential

of LEDs will be exploited effectively by tapping into the creative, artistic possibilities offered by LEDs during the luminaire development process. Like the car industry, which, in the early 20 th century, was still fitting engines in carriages, we stand at the start of a development path which will be long and no doubt exciting. In your opinion, which application areas will benefit most from LED development? I think retail area lighting and outdoor lighting applications are bound to benefit most from LEDs but museum lighting will also reap the benefits of gentle LED light. LED luminaires can replace conventional low-voltage halogen luminaires for retail area lighting in an energy-efficient manner without any loss of quality. There is already appreciable demand for LED-based wide-area backlighting and cove lighting. It is possible to envisage LEDs replacing certain HIT lamps in the near future. Where LEDs replace conventional lamps, the cold light produced by LEDs also makes it possible to reduce heat input. Because of the compact design of LEDs, in outdoor lighting there will be a tendency to dispense with illumination and position light on the actual building. This has positive side effects: less energy is consumed and there is less risk of light pollution and light nuisance. How do you see the future development of LED lighting? LED downlights can definitely replace downlights that use compact fluorescent lamps. Even lighting using LED spotlights is an important trend in LED lighting. Some products offer the ability to adjust colour temperature individually to suit the relevant requirements, thereby influencing the ambience in a targeted manner this is a major advantage.

Light for outdoor areas Big effect using compact, powerful LED packages

Facade lighting LEDs open up new architectural design pos sibi l ities. Thanks to their compact size and RGB colour dynamism, LEDs can be used to stage striking lighting effects. Tightly focused LED light is ideal for accentuating detailing or setting building axes and surfaces of materials centre stage. Sweeping LED light lines emphasise straight architectural lines with great precision. LED uplights throw precise cones of light onto facades, columns or building axes.

LEDs use projected light to lay the foundation for energy-efficient lighting solutions. The tightly focused light they deliver can be optimally aligned by using application-specific lenses. Besides low power consumption, LED solutions achieve very high overall efficiency levels which are hard to achieve using conventional light sources. Relamping is a significant cost factor in the case of conventional light sources. LEDs, on the other hand, have longer maintenance intervals because of their good durability.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SEOUL (ROK) | Lighting solution: LEDOS recessed floor luminaires provide guidance and act as lighting points that produce decorative accent lighting

Orientation lighting Wallmounted and bollard luminaires mark out the way along steps and stairs in a very subtle but nevertheless effective manner. Their light is directed downwards directly onto the ground in order to avoid distracting stray light. LEDs also work as an architectural design element. LED luminaires arranged in a line and linear LED luminaires brilliantly light the way. They channel visitor flows, delineate different areas and catch peoples eyes. And the biggest economic plus of LED orientation luminaires: thanks to high operational reliability and the minimal

maintenance effort they require, they put the concept of Install & Forget into practice perfectly. Accent lighting Varied light brings a lighting solution alive. LEDs offer a wealth of ways to achieve this: small LED luminaires can be positioned as required on the floor, walls and ceilings, and geometrical patterns can be created easily. Coloured light has a special emotional impact. A wide range of light colours, and precise colour definition in the case of RGB models, turn the LED into a popular tool for branding using CI colours.

ORILED

Ground-level orientation luminaire

People need to be able to find their way intuitively at any time of day. This is especially true when it comes to finding ones way around public buildings. Light makes an important contribution to this and also improves safety. ORILED is the perfect alternative to conventional fluorescent lamps. A unique lens/reflector combination directs LED light onto the ground over a wide area. The luminaires extremely uniform light distribution is ideal for specifically illuminating steps, corridors, passageways and circulation areas. This means that LEDs are an efficient replacement for lamps with relatively higher wattages and luminous flux levels in such locations. With colour temperatures of 3,000 K and 5,400 K, as well as a blue-light version, ORILED can handle both functional and decorative lighting tasks. Its optionally flush-mounted or overlapping special steel frame is fixed by virtually invisible camlock fasteners. These recessed luminaires and bollard luminaires are available with IP 65 protection and are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. Alternatively, ORILED is also available with separate battery packs for 1 or 3 hours of operation for use in emergency lighting systems.

Eye-catching design Movement and dynamism are all the rage and that goes for lighting too. The boldest trend involves using video-compatible media luminaires to get messages across and dissolve spatial boundaries. LEDs are excellent light sources for lighting coves because of their intense colours and the way they direct light so precisely. Despite consuming very little energy, they brighten up walls and ceilings perfectly. Besides coloured lighting coves, LED luminaires with a coloured corona are also an ideal lighting tool for zoning purposes.

Variety as an overall concept With their variable colour temperatures, LEDs have a great talent for selling by providing warm to cool white light at exactly the right moment. Light with the right colour temperature creates an agreeable atmosphere that invites shoppers to linger. The added value provided by LEDs compared to conventional light sources lies in the combination of functional white light and coloured special lighting effects they deliver. Dramatically staged effects in shops and shop windows arouse peoples curiosity and grab their attention.

Patented solution for hard-toaccess locations The long life expectancy of Zumtobel LED luminaires minimises expensive maintenance work especially in situations where relamping requires considerable effort. An atrium with a high ceiling and escalators are just two examples where a long-lasting LED luminaire renders value services.

SPARKASSE HOHENHAUSEN (D) | LED lighting solution: TEMPURA spotlights and downlights, PANOS downlights, LEDOS recessed oor luminaires, 2LIGHT MINI and LED light lines

Gentle lighting LEDs are the only light sources that produce IR- and UV-free light without additional filters and protection. Colours dont fade and delicate materials remain pristine, even if the LED luminaire is positioned very close to the product or very high illuminance levels are needed. Lower thermal loads also have the advantage of cutting operating costs; because LEDs produce less heat, air conditioning systems dont have to work as hard. Branding Strong brands address all the customers senses in order to build a lasting customer relationship. This is why business premises and retail areas are being used more and more for branding purposes. Chain stores with standardised shop concepts confirm this trend and innovative LED luminaires are just the right tool to achieve this. Where the lighting solution picks up the colour concept of a specific brand, this creates a strong link between space and brand far more so than could be achieved by shop fixtures and fittings. Corporate lighting also underlines the character of a brand after opening hours, thereby making a long-term contribution towards branding.

VIVO LED

Spotlight with 360 precision

Like the entire VIVO spotlight range, the LED version can also be rotated and pivoted any way you like. The luminaires integral clip makes it possible to aim light at products and objects quickly and conveniently. The smaller version of the LED spotlight projects a remarkable 450 lumens of light with a narrow 15 radiation angle, despite its low power consumption (12 W). The 30 W LED spotlight projects a generous 1,000 lumens with a radiation angle of 25. At 3,000 K, the luminaires colour rendition Ra is in excess of 90 and at 4,200 K Ra it is still above 80. Both types are optionally switchable or DALI dimmable and, thanks to active cooling, have a service life of up to 50,000 hours. They project enough light to replace 50 W or 90 W halogen lamps and 20 W HIT lamps. Unlike the latter, VIVO LED is dimmable and produces IR- and UV-free light. This LED spotlight can therefore be used in any situation where halogen lamps have previously been used: in retail areas and exhibitions, in galleries and shops.

SOLINA direct/indirect LED RGB

SOLINA

Hybrid luminaire with accent lighting

SYSTEMLED Flood lens optics provide precise light distribution for wallwashing in a way that is almost impossible to achieve using conventional fluorescent lamps with a reflector. The high-quality extruded aluminium section supports LEDs and is also used as a cooling surface in order to dissipate heat, thereby extending the luminaires service life. Thanks to the compact size of LED light lines, RGB lighting solutions in particular can be implemented in a much more space-saving manner than is possible when using, for example, fluorescent lamps. LEDs are also not sensitive to rapid changes in colour.

SOLINA is a high-bay reflector luminaire which, thanks to its design and a wide range of different (conventional) light sources, has numerous applications in shop lighting in particular. Because interior design and the power of attraction which interior design exerts on customers are major factors in this application, SOLINA has been supplemented with RGB LEDs for accent lighting on the ceiling. Compared with conventional colour filters for indirect accent lighting, with LEDs, light colour can be changed at the press of a button or even be changed dynamically in order to attract more attention.

Special advantages

Indirect light is an established feel-good lighting factor, coloured light sets striking accents. LEDs are highly rated because of their very intense colours and colour changes at the press of a button.

LEDs for art and culture Light for authentic exhibition concepts

Projected light The features offered by the latest generation of LED luminaires are virtually limitless. Besides the full palette of RGB colours, a wide spectrum of colour temperatures is also available at the press of a button, without having to replace light sources or filters. These straightforward, quick changes in colour temperature set the scene perfectly for sensitive lighting solutions which can be adapted perfectly to suit any era of art or exhibition features. The previously set colour temperature is accurately maintained even when the LED luminaire is dimmed. Another design plus: because LEDs are compact, they can be used to implement lighting concepts where the luminaire stays unobtrusively in the background and does not divert attention from exhibits.

Conservational lighting Prestigious premises can be made even more imposing by appropriately exploiting the drama of light. Nevertheless, objects that have a history dating back hundreds of years or which are made of delicate materials must not be damaged by lighting. Innovative LED technology is the long-term answer to such needs.

The latest LED luminaires meet the exacting requirements of conservators and museum management staff in every respect. Despite high illuminance levels, they guarantee UV- and IR-free light, thus protecting historical, precious exhibits against fading and deterioration.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF ZURICH UNIVERSITY (CH) | Lighting solution: TEMPURA spotlights, indirect lighting using TREN track system

ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF ZURICH UNIVERSITY (CH) | Lighting solution: besides insisting that exhibits were protected from harmful IR and UV radiation, renovators also demanded maximum exibility and ef ciency. The variable colour temperatures and energysaving LED technology of TEMPURA spotlights proved to be a persuasive solution.

Wide-area backlighting Widearea, diffuse light has an especially authoritative presence. It sparks a sense of freedom by dissolving boundaries in enclosed spaces and allowing contours to flow smoothly and merge. This is why wide-area backlighting is much in demand in modern museums in particular. Such lighting is often seen in combination

with glass and porcelain; their transparency and lightness are visualised more expressively by backlighting and by lighting from below. Diffuse light from an LED luminous ceiling, combined with brilliant point lighting of the kind provided by LED spotlights, produces especially appealing lighting scenarios.

Colour temperatures from 2,700 to 6,500 K and any required colour within the colour triangle: TEMPURA copes effortlessly but very sensitively with an entire raft of functional lighting tasks. IR/UV-free light protects fragile exhibits. When not fitted with an attachment lens, the spotlight has uniform, tightly focused light distribution 16 (diagram on left-hand page). Scattering discs which replace the clear protective glass panel in front of the honeycomb-shaped lenses widen the spotlights light distribution very evenly. Control via EMOTION touch panel: the dynamic interplay of colour and colour temperature is virtually limitless. Six honeycomb-shaped lenses focus and homogenise light from the LEDs. A sensor in the middle of the LED board continuously measures the luminous flux, colour temperature and light colour. As the LEDs illumination output decreases, luminous flux is automatically readjusted and the lumen package of the spotlight is stabilised for more than 50,000 hours of operation (large photo above). Stand-alone: soft keys for setting the colour temperature and brightness (10 100 %) are located on the underside of the TEMPURA gear box (small photo above).

A lighting solution with adjustable colour temperature enables exhibition designers to accentuate the personality of an art object emotionally and make people aware of contents and materials. Shop operators who use appropriate light colours to bring various lighting scenes associated with different times of day and different seasons into retail spaces have quite similar objectives. Eventful, lively lighting solutions also exploit the limitless RGB colour palette in order to use light colours to accentuate individual areas.

Intermediate and cool light temperatures have a stimulating effect. People on the arts scene prefer to use this kind of light to illuminate contemporary works of art and installations. Works of art created by candlelight, on the other hand, look much more authentic in warm white light. This kind of light strikes a comforting note.

Special advantages

Asymmetrical recessed wall luminaire

Precon gured video clusters make rapid use possible: packages consist of luminaires, video control unit (VCU) and pre-stored animations. The video control unit (VCU) individually controls every pixel of the CIELOS Move: 30 images per second produce smooth owing transitions. 12 12 or 18 18 pixels with RGB LEDs determine resolution and design possibilities. 50 mm pixel pitch is preserved, even when more luminaires are cascaded. The DALI version is wide-area controlled using DALI signals (3 DALI addresses). This makes it possible to add the intense colours of RGB LEDs to DALI-based lighting solutions.

With its indirect light in various colours and hues of white, KAVA LED has an understated, restrained appearance. The light generated by the light emitting diodes is directed onto the ground by the asymmetrical reflector while the luminaire itself blends into the background. KAVA LED is an attractive solution for illuminating steps but can also be used for ambient lighting in pedestrian areas and corridors. Versions with IP 20 and IP 54 protection are also suitable for outdoor as well as indoor applications.

PANOS PureWhite

Pure, unadulterated LED innovation

This largest commercially available downlight product range is constantly being updated in line with the state of the art. PANOS LED PureWhite boasts high energy efficiency and low maintenance costs. In keeping with the Install & Forget concept, long maintenance intervals slash the cost of regular relamping. PANOS PureWhite delivers 1,000 lumens and is a more energy-efficient replacement for 26 W fluorescent lamps. If illuminance is the main priority, the 2,000 lumen version is clearly a better alternative. With twice the luminous flux, it achieves the same levels as 2/26 W or 1/32 W fluorescent lamps. A luminaire with such a high luminous flux places exacting requirements on thermal management. Zumtobel optimises the luminaires service life by using SynJet technology an active cooling system that uses a moving diaphragm. Warm white and intermediate white versions of PANOS PureWhite provide an easy way of selecting a colour temperature to suit a particular lighting situation. Versions with a DALI interface allow the luminaire to be dimmed by using a bus signal. Page 44: information on PANOS BioMotion

AERO II HYBRID
AERO II Hybrid

The best of two worlds

AERO II Hybrid marks a new chapter in the history of lighting technology. It is the first ever luminaire to interactively combine LEDs and fluorescent lamps. The interaction of high-power LEDs and a T16 lamp creates one of the most efficient indirect/direct luminaires ever. Highly efficient, cool light from the high-power LEDs is absolutely glare free and is directed onto the task area by the waveguide and MPO+. Indirect general lighting reaps the full benefit of the ergonomic qualities of the T16 fluorescent lamp: high luminance levels and warm light colours create a pleasant atmosphere. When teamed together, these two separately controllable light sources are unbeatable both in terms of performance and energy efficiency.

SLOTLIGHT is the light line for shaping and dividing up spaces and architecture. Thanks to its understated design, this luminaire is capable of shaping and lighting rooms using a conventional fluorescent lamp. SLOTLIGHT with RGB LEDs can now zone rooms with colour, evoke emotions and create an identity in the same form and format as its parent luminaire does using T16 lamps. Built-in DALI controllers make it possible to control both types of lamps via a single system. This is accomplished without having to order extra equipment. Dynamic colour changes can be generated or colours can be adjusted to suit particular uses or times of day by using a control system such as LUXMATE Emotion.

Emergency lighting The ideal sphere of action for durable LED power packages

LED technology is gaining widespread acceptance in the field of emergency lighting in particular because durability plays such a crucial role in safety. Many escape sign and emergency luminaires are in use round the clock, and conventional fluorescent lamps therefore have to be replaced annually. By using luminaires equipped with LEDs and efficient thermal management, Zumtobel has extended the service life of luminaires beyond 50,000 hours. A second crucial argument in favour of using LEDs for emergency lighting is their compact size. The minimal space required by the light source lays the foundation for pared-down, less bulky luminaires which discreetly blend into the architecture.

Tiny and very efficient: just a small number of inconspicuous RESCLITE emergency luminaires are enough to provide orientation and ensure safety in the event of an emergency.

The ARTSIGN escape sign luminaires appearance and durability are enhanced by high-grade aluminium

Escape sign luminaires The small form factor of LEDs paves the way for less bulky, visually unobtrusive escape sign luminaires. In terms of energy use, LEDs are attractive given their low power consumption and high light output ratios. Zumtobel builds on these capabilities by bringing innovative lighting technology into play in order to illuminate escape signs uniformly with luminance levels in conformity with relevant standards. Teamed with high-performance thermal management, long-lived LEDs guarantee total freedom from maintenance.

Another Zumtobel highlight: a maintenance function in all ONLITE LED luminaires automatically compensates for decreases in the luminous flux of LEDs as they age. This means that LEDs can initially be operated at a 70 % dimming level. This level is continuously increased to 100 % over the burn life of the LED. This has a major advantage the luminance level of the escape sign luminaire remains constant throughout its entire service life and, at the same time, the LED luminaires service life is extended.

61

Emergency lighting Besides their durability and compact size, the above-average efficiency of LEDs is another important factor. In the case of emergency lighting, LEDs are not only capable of helping cut energy consumption, they also help to make sure that the entire system does not get bloated. LED luminaires with lower installed loads are happy with relatively small power supply systems and smaller sized circuits. Scaled-down installations such as these operate in a more environmentally friendly manner and use resources more frugally. Zumtobels specially developed

emergency lighting optics are yet another step on the road towards above-average efficiency in emergency lighting. This way, a smaller number of luminaires can ensure the required level of safety. Separately installed emergency systems are also freed from dependence on general lighting. This independence and compact size also provide wider scope in terms of design. LED emergency luminaires stay discreetly in the background and the general lighting concept can be developed without having to pay much attention to emergency lighting.

Transparent acrylic glass and versatile mounting options make the COMSIGN II escape sign luminaire a real allrounder. A specially shaped circuit board enables the LED luminaire to produce uniform luminance levels.

RESCLITE

A new era in emergency lighting

Using a power LED and three sophisticated optics, RESCLITE ushers in a new era of emergency lighting. Thanks to maximum efficiency and perfect light distribution, a small number of luminaires is enough to provide emergency lighting in conformity with relevant standards. And yet the powerful LED package requires a minimum of energy. The luminaires installed load is only 5 W, in non-maintained mode even as low as 1.5 W. Correspondingly, only small-scale supply and cable systems are necessary.

RESCLITE escape Escape route lighting EN 1838 species a minimum illuminance of 1 lux for escape routes. RESCLITE escape uses a special combination of lens and reector to focus this light onto a long, narrow strip. Its range and hence the maximum spacing between two luminaires is up to 23 m. High-grade lighting technology controls glare and ensures optimal visual conditions, even during emergency operation. These features make RESCLITE escape an escape-route lighting specialist for rooms which have ceilings that are 2.2 to 7 m high.

RESCLITE antipanic Spatial orientation According to EN 1838, 0.5 lux is required in order to prevent panic in emergency situations. RESCLITE anti-panics wide-angle, rotationally symmetrical light beam illuminates very large surface areas uniformly. In fact, a single luminaire is capable of lighting a 170 m area in conformity with relevant standards and making escape routes and obstacles visible.

RESCLITE spot Lighting of emergency equipment EN 1838 states that special attention must be paid to rst aid and re ghting equipment, call stations not located on escape routes and antipanic lighting. Such facilities must be lit with at least 5 lux measured on the oor. RESCLITE spot meets these requirements with a high level of safety and low energy consumption. This LED spotlight is therefore used where higher emergency lighting levels are required. This includes potential danger points and safety equipment.

Maximum luminaire spacing: up to 23 m > 1 lx

Maximum room illumination: up to 170 m > 0.5 lx

Maximum equipment illumination: up to 3 m > 5 lx

Special advantages

Fewer luminaires are needed because of their excellent performance. Intelligent thermal management with large-area cooling fins drops the temperature inside luminaire housing down to ambient temperature. Batteries and LEDs like these ideal operating conditions and return the favour by achieving an extremely long service life (photo on left). Despite its compact design, every RESCLITE emergency luminaire boasts typical Zumtobel convenient touches such as standard installation terminals for through-wiring and no-tool battery replacement.

Installation and mounting require no tool whatsoever neither for mains connection nor strain relief. The LED spotlight is fixed in the ceiling by two mounting brackets. Every RESCLITE luminaire is available as a separate-battery, group-battery or centrally powered version. RESCLITE is revolutionising emergency lighting design. Spacings can be read off in a simple table on the basis of room height, without any photometric calculations, directly on site. Zumtobel supplies a practical design tool with a dial for this purpose (photo on right).

PURESIGN

Extra slim and durable

A special 3 mm thick aluminium frame, a shallow mounting height and a recognition range of 30 m are among slim-line PURESIGNs external features. The interior of the escape sign luminaire packs the very latest LED and lighting technology. In the case of the luminaire for surface mounting on walls, an additional LED spot directed towards the escape route increases the visibility of escape doors. Various mounting options are further evidence of its widely varied applications. Constant luminance The luminous flux of LEDs diminishes over their service life. This is why all Zumtobel ONLITE LED luminaires have a maintenance function. This means that LEDs are initially operated at a 70 % dimming level. This level is gradually increased to 100 %. This guarantees an average luminance level in excess of 200 cd/m over the LEDs entire service life. Simple installation Useful features simplify electrical installers dayto-day work: PURESIGN escape sign luminaires are installed without the use of any tool and no accessories are needed in order to replace batteries either. When working on the luminaire, the pictograph is attached to a practical suspension device. The five clearly marked standard installation terminals for through-wiring (5 2.5 mm) have also been thoroughly field-tested. Power supply options Every ONLITE luminaire is available as a self-contained, group-battery or centrally powered version. Zumtobel general-purpose luminaires can also be used as emergency luminaires. They are factory fitted with an emergency lighting unit for this purpose.

PURESIGN

www.zumtobel.com/onlite

Special advantages

For the most uniform possible backlighting: laterally arranged LEDs inject light into a circuit board which has been specially laser etched (photo on left). Proof of effective lighting technology: luminance measurements reveal very high uniformity at an average luminance level of 250 cd/m. The escape sign luminaire is therefore visible from afar and rounds out the aesthetic appearance. Wall-mounted luminaire with LED spot: lighting the escape route and pointing people in the right direction, the PURESIGN wallmounted luminaire with a separate LED spot is the only escape sign luminaire that can do this. Illuminance of up to 7 lux renders an additional emergency luminaire in the vicinity of the door superfluous.

What is an LED? Features of the Light Emitting Diode

LED ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Types of LED

(1) SMD LEDs Surface Mounted Device LEDs are bonded onto the surface of the printed circuit board and are contacted in the solder bath. The linear LED board in KAVA LED, for example, is equipped with LEDs featuring SMD design.

(2) Chip-on-Board LEDs After the LED chip is bonded directly onto the board and is contacted via the bond wires, a bonded epoxy lens, the so-called bubble, defines light distribution. According to the design of the bubble, a COB LED can have extremely narrow-beam or extremely wide-angle distribution.

(3) High current LED As part of the continuous development of LEDs for lighting industry purposes, focus is being increasingly shifted from decorative lighting applications to functional lighting. To achieve this the LED chip must become significantly larger and in order to achieve full output, power supply is not the 1030 mA as with small chips, but 350 to over 700 mA. This demands a completely new LED design. High current LEDs are integrated within a heat sink that is able to take up the heat from the chip very effi ciently and transfer it directly to a larger cooling surface.

Luminous ux vs. illumination output of a complete system

Luminous flux per unit of energy, expressed as lumens/watt is a very important parameter when comparing the efficiencies of lamps. Luminaires must be based on a level comparison.

This is demonstrated by taking the example of downlights with fluorescent lamps and downlights with LEDs. Although LEDs do not yet measure up to fluorescent lamps when luminous flux levels are directly compared, this is often not the case when the entire system is considered. Because they have a different beam pattern, LEDs radiate most of their light in one direction. In contrast, fluorescent lamps have a 360 beam pattern. Efficiency losses in the reflector reduce the usable luminous flux significantly. This is why one must always com-

pare the light actually projected by luminaires, i. e. their luminous flux after taking into account efficiency losses.

White LED light Various processes for producing white light

Zumtobel uses various technologies in luminaires in order to produce the best possible white light for its customers, depending on the application area in question. The most common process uses the principle of luminescence conversion. A fluorescent layer similar to that found in a fluorescent lamp is incorporated above a blue LED chip, so that part of the light band is converted into white light. Depending on the composition of the conversion substance, colour temperature ranges from warm to cool white. The major advantages of this process include relatively high luminous flux levels and often very good colour rendition (Ra > 90).

Yellow fluorescent layer with conversion substances LED chip Blue LED chip

Printed circuit board Luminescence conversion: conversion substances in fluorescent layer define the colour temperature

White light can also be created by mixing coloured light. This process has the advantage that colour temperature can be varied with one lighting point and coloured light can be produced as well as white light. It has the drawback of relatively limited colour rendition. There are also other technologies which produce variable-temperature white light with high colour rendition by mixing various LEDs (e. g. RGB plus white).

What can LEDs do? Capabilities and limitations at a glance

LED ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Benets of LED technology

Long service life Depending on design, LEDs achieve a service life of up to 50,000 hours or more. This translates into long maintenance intervals, but only if efficient thermal management is ensured (this is a distinctive feature of good product design). The boards of highoutput LEDs become very hot. This is why Zumtobel uses active cooling systems that employ fans or membrane cooling. Low energy consumption In the context of the CO2 debate, energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. The luminous flux per watt of todays LED generation is well above that of low-voltage halogen luminaires and they can be regarded as replacements for fluorescent lamps when overall system efficiency is taken into account. Depending on colour temperature, modern LEDs achieve figures of 40 to 80 lm/W.

Gentle light LEDs do not produce IR and UV radiation. Heat is produced on the printed circuit board but it is not radiated in the direction of the object that is to be illuminated. This makes it possible to illuminate fragile, precious items in museums or shops gently and impressively. Coloured and colour-changing light LEDs create light directly in various colours by using different semiconductor materials. Unlike conventional light sources, there is no need to use colour filters which cause considerable losses. Coloured LEDs can be combined with intelligent controllers in order to produce mixed colours and colour-changing sequences.

Control of LEDs LEDs are semiconductor devices that can be efficiently dimmed or dynamically controlled. LEDs can be incorporated into a lighting design by using standard bus signals such as DALI, DMX or 1 10 V and appropriate control gear on a stand-alone basis or as part of a comprehensive lighting concept. Other LED benets: Saturated colours Optimal operation at low temperatures Unaffected by vibration and impact Compact design

Limitations of LED technology

LEDs are not at ease with high ambient temperatures. If LEDs are used under such conditions (in saunas for example), luminous flux and service life are negatively affected.

The boards of high-output LEDs become very hot. In order to ensure a long LED luminaire service life, the board must be efficiently cooled and this is why, despite the fact that they have extremely small light sources, LED luminaires often have relatively large heat sinks.

LED ENCYCLOPAEDIA

75

Benets of LED technology compared to low-voltage halogen and uorescent lamps

Compared to low-voltage halogen lamps, one of the main advantages is IR/UV-free light and the resulting absence of heat radiation. Small semiconductor light sources can exploit this advantage to the full in applications involving materials that are sensitive to IR or UV. Another advantage is the fact that cool LED light makes it possible to use plastic lenses. This means that light can be precisely directed in a way which is virtually impossible when using conventional reflector technology. In the context of the CO2 debate, energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. The luminous flux per watt of todays LED generation is well above that of low-voltage halogen luminaires, depending on colour temperature, modern LEDs achieve a figure of 40 to 80 lm/W. Because LED luminaires, depending on the type of LED, have a service life of 50,000 hours or more, maintenance costs are correspondingly low.

Advantages compared to compact fluorescent lamps are somewhat less. When comparing luminous flux levels, the entire system comprising lamp/LED and luminaire must always be considered. Because of the amount of light they project, LEDs can often favourably withstand comparison to fluorescent lamps. Special applications also need to be considered. Besides conservational lighting and long maintenance intervals, the main benefit of LEDs is projected light. Lens optics allow optimal light direction onto the target area, allowing the output to be much more efficiently implemented. In addition, cove lighting in dynamic colours with space saving RGB LED solutions, for example, can be created more and energy efficiently.

LED Guide Detailed technical information

Zumtobel has collected detailed design, mounting and installation information for LED luminaires in a special LED Guide. This practical reference guide is available as a hardcopy brochure or as a download. The PDF file is available at www.zumtobel.com/downloads

LED quality characteristics and LED controls at a glance

LED ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Quality characteristics of LED luminaires

The quality of LED luminaires is reflected in uniform, standardised light colours and lighting intensity levels and the service life of the complete system. In this respect binning and thermal management are important concepts. Binning There are slight variations in various LED characteristics, e. g. intensity or colour, within a single production batch of LEDs. Using all the LEDs in a batch in the same luminaire would inevitably result in different brightness levels and light colours within a single luminaire.

Selecting a specific LED binning group guarantees constant lighting quality. This results in all LED luminaires, which are fitted with LEDs with the same LED binning, having an identical appearance.

The term binning denotes the grading of LEDs in accordance with specific criteria such as: Luminous flux measured in lumens (lm) Colour temperature measured in Kelvin (K) Forward voltage measured in volts

bin 1: 2,800 K bin 2: 3,200 K bin 3: 4,500 K bin 4: 6,500 K

Example of binning: Grading by colour temperature

Thermal management LED manufacturers always specify a maximum operating temperature for their LEDs at which the luminous flux and service life stated in their data sheets are achieved. This temperature is referred to as the junction temperature. There are various thermal resistances in an LED luminaire, starting with the LED circuit board right through to the luminaire housing. LEDs with a high luminous flux usually develop more heat which must be dissipated via the luminaire housing.

Thermal management taking the example of the TEMPURA spotlight Heat generated by the LED is conducted in the LED chip to the metal core (1) The next thermal resistance is located between the LED chip and the LED circuit board at this junction. As much heat as possible must be removed from the LED chip (2) Heat is dissipated from the luminaire into the external environment via a heat sink or the luminaire housing. Efficient thermal management of the entire system is a crucial pre-requisite for achieving predicable performance and a long luminaire service life (3)

EMOTION Touch Control using DALI signals

The EMOTION touch panel is a control and operating unit in one. It is a self-explanatory unit for local lighting management systems and handles the control of several components to perfectly co-ordinate lighting scenes at the touch of a finger, without any programming knowledge or control skills. It is also a valuable tool for saving energy thanks to its ability to direct dynamic lighting sequences and exploit daylight. Its main application areas are offices, training and conference rooms, doctors surgeries, wellness areas, bank branches and shops. Because of its user interfaces, some of which are specially adapted for LED applications, the EMOTION touch panel is the perfect tool for implementing impressive DALI-based lighting solutions.

The EMOTION touch panel is suitable for obtaining striking, fast colour changes (e. g. in retail) as well as smooth dynamic lighting changes to boost motivation during a day at the office.

Selecting colours is as easy as finger painting: simply touch one of the predefined colour fields and RGB LED luminaires change their light colour. The result is immediately visible.

On another selection page, the user has the option of selecting any required colour within the colour triangle or calling up any colour by means of its x/y co-ordinates, thus defining the light colours produced by RGB luminaires.

Colour temperature can be specified in two ways for TEMPURA and PANOS BioMotion: either enter the specific Kelvin value or click one of the predefined colour fields. Luminaires immediately produce the desired colour temperature.

LED control units Overview of more options

LED ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Video Control Unit Many pixels, all the action

The Video Control Unit (VCU) can control up to 1,800 individual RGB pixels. This means that large surface areas comprising many LED pixels can not only be switched on and off or dimmed; every pixel can be individually controlled by changing its colour and intensity. The video-compatible CIELOS Move media luminaire uses this control unit and is therefore capable of reproducing images and videos in product-specific resolutions as well as colours and colour transitions. Image transitions are smooth thanks to a refresh rate of 30 images per second. Image sequences are stored in the system.

This means the VCU is independent of other system units and there is no danger of data loss in the event of a power failure. The VCU can also be controlled via ArtNet DMX packages. Several self-synchronising VCUs in a self-contained network are usually linked up for large areas comprising more than 2 900 pixels, which is equivalent to 12 CIELOS Move 600 or 4 CIELOS Move 900. This makes it possible to create dynamic colours and images both for smaller applications using individual CIELOS Move modules or large customised surfaces.

DMX for rapid lighting changes

DMX was developed in the USA and was originally used for stage lighting; nowadays it is increasingly being used in architectural application areas. With a classic DMX-512 system, up to 512 channels/addresses can be individually controlled from a central control unit with very high-speed signal sequences. In the case of colour-changing luminaires and classic three-channel technology, three channels are used for RGB colour mixing; these are then controlled via a bus by defined fade or cross-fade times.

There are now also systems which link up several DMX worlds and achieve very impressive results in large-scale applications. Many LED products in the Zumtobel product range can now be DMX controlled. The TEMPURA spotlight, for instance, is already available with DMXcapable control gear fitted in the luminaire housing. Other Zumtobel products such as LEDOS recessed luminaires or SYSTEMLED light lines can be connected to an appropriate bus by using external DMX control gear. Zumtobel supplies an appropriate converter for DMX input signals.

DMX is ideal for a rapidly changing colour sequences. In simple applications, lighting is controlled via a small DMX console (see photo), more complex installations are controlled via a computer.

Sequencer colour dynamism made easy

The simplest and most affordable alternative for designing RGB LED colour-changing sequences is to use a sequencer. The LED luminaires then run through a preset sequence in the RGB colour triangle.

A potentiometer can be used, for example, to select the speed of a colour transition or to select a static colour.

The sequencer in the Zumtobel product portfolio provides an analogue 110 V signal and a 100 k potentiometer to adjust the colourchange speed.
