Maintenance of the Query Statistic Data Collection (cont.)

_________________________________
Default settings for statistic data collection
(Delivered) system default:
D = X = On,
Statistic Detail level: D = 1 = Only Front-End/Calculation Layer Data

The default for all queries can be customized

Extras Change Default

InfoProvider default for queries can be customized

All new queries of this InfoProvider will inherit the new setting

Statistic data management recommendations

Review the (delivered) system default and disable statistic data collection if
performance monitoring is not needed!
Example: InfoProviders with low data volume

Setting the statistic detail level to 2 for all queries will result in large amounts of
data in the statistics data collection tables
Rule of thumb: ~ 30-40 records per query navigation step
Frequent transfer to Technical Content InfoProviders is recommended
Delete statistics data (in transaction RSDDSTAT) frequently

_________________________________

SAP AG 2007, 15

Deleting Query Runtime Statistics

_________________________________
Estimated data volume in query runtime statistics
Depending on the detail statistics level, 20-40 records may be written per
navigation step to the BI statistics tables (for InfoProviders/queries for
which statistics data collection is turned on)
Example: 500 users per day, each with 6 navigation steps on average = 500 x 6 x
30 = 90,000 records/day in the BI statistics tables!

1. Manual deletion of statistics data

_________________________________
_________________________________
_________________________________
_________________________________

In transaction RSDDSTAT, enter dates to delete

_________________________________

2. Automatic deletion during data load

_________________________________

By default, data of the last 14 days is deleted out of the BI statistics tables
with each delta load for query runtime statistics. This timeframe can be
changed by modifying parameter TCT_KEEP_OLAP_DM_DATA_N_DAYS in
table RSADMIN.

CCMS Monitoring Benefits

_________________________________
Centralized monitoring one screen
Large landscapes can be centrally monitored by a
single administrator

Scalability
Landscapes with only a few components, or those
with more than a hundred, can be monitored
efficiently

_________________________________
_________________________________
_________________________________
_________________________________

Proactive monitoring with alerts

_________________________________

No admin activity is required, except in case of alerts

_________________________________

Alert notifications (email, SMS, etc.) can be triggered automatically

Assisted problem detection and resolution

From the central system, administrators can drill down to a monitored
component to identify the root cause of the alert using predefined
analysis features

Persistent Performance Data Why?

_________________________________
Short-lived monitoring data in the central system (CEN)
30 minute values, 16 quarter-hour values, and 24 hour values are stored
for each attribute in a shared memory segment (typically 20MB) before
the data is overwritten

_________________________________
_________________________________
_________________________________

The need for persistent data

Some key values should be available as history data for long-term
analysis and reporting (Service Level Management [SLM])
Performance and availability data are key for SLM

Front-End/OLAP Statistics vs. Data Manager Statistics

The SAP BW 3.x OLAP statistics are split into front-end/OLAP statistics (Clientside time) and Data Manager statistics (DB Time)

_________________________________

Front-end/OLAP time primarily operates as serial execution. The Data Manager

primarily operates using parallel execution.

_________________________________

Front-end/OLAP records many different events. The Data Manager records only a
small number of events.

_________________________________
_________________________________

Statistic detail levels

_________________________________

Queries now have very detailed statistics!

The level of detail you can record for a query is customizable

_________________________________

Event concept
There is a new Event ID Characteristic that provides an extensible framework for
measuring performance

_________________________________
_________________________________

Enhanced coverage of BI functionality

Enhanced: The Statistics measures performance for BEx Web and Planning now!
New: Statistics now measures the performance of the BI Accelerator specifically
