(WASHINGTON, D.C.)The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and The New Republic
today announced a special event to commemorate, in words and in music, the 10
th
anniversary of the
tragedies that took place on September 11, 2001. Hosted by Christiane Amanpour, 9/11: 10 Years
LaterAn Evening of Remembrance and Reflection will take place Thursday, September 8 at 7:30pm
in the Concert Hall. Artists will include Denyce Graves, Emmylou Har ris, Melissa Leo, Wynton
Marsalis, The Voices of I nspi ration, under the Direction of Nolan Williams, Jr. and the National
Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Mauceri. Commemorative remarks and readings will be
offered by Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Madeleine Albright, Leon Wieseltier, and other guest
speakers.

UPDATED September 7 to add: The event will be livestreamed via Facebook at 7:30 p.m. ET
on Thursday September 8, 2011. Viewers may tune in at Facebook.com/KennedyCenter or
Facebook.com/TheNewRepublic by clicking on the "9/11 Livestream tab. Alternatively they can watch
at http://www.livestream.com/kennedycenter. This unprecedented streaming of the solemn occasion
marks another milestone in the Kennedy Center`s exploration oI social media and will make the
performance available around the globe.
The by-invitation-only audience at the Kennedy Center will include members of the 9/11
community and other special guests. The New Republic will simultaneously publish '9/11: 10 Years
Later, a special commemorative issue oI the magazine, which will be distributed to all those attending
the event. It will include reflections and recollections by a wide array of distinguished thinkers and
writers exploring the many meanings of this anniversary. The magazine will also archive its extensive
coverage of 9/11 and its consequences over the past decade at www.tnr.com.
Soon aIter the tragedy in 2001, the Kennedy Center presented 'A Concert Ior America, which
honored the victims in the attack. The program was broadcast nationally by PBS and featured First
Lady Laura Bush, Senator Edward Kennedy, and a host of performers that included the National
Symphony Orchestra, Frederica von Stade, Harolyn Blackwell, Sir James Galway, Dr. Billy Taylor and
Mary Chapin Carpenter.
In September 2002, the Center presented a two-hour tribute, also titled 'A Concert Ior America,
which was hosted by Tom Brokaw and broadcast by NBC on September 11 of that year. The program
showcased a diverse spectrum of artists, including Josh Groban, Denyce Graves, Reba McIntyre, Alan
Jackson, Chris Isaac, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
