Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Alcohol drinking by college students has become a social phenomenon in which they do not acknowledge the health risks that are involved with their excessive drinking habits. Furthermore, college students do not know enough about alcohol in general and what exactly it does to the body or they do not pay attention to the information given to them. What are the reasons why college students tend to drink alcohol? What are the reasons behind their habitual drinking? What are the effects of alcohol to college students? College is a time for a person to prepare for his future. This is also the time for people to achieve an education. However, when people hear about college experiences, they are mostly focused around wild parties, and alcohol drinking, that will lead to the makings of what they called good time. Most of the time, students hear and talk about is how much alcohol they drank the night before and how awesome it was, but what are some of the effects that result from the road of alcohol? Since the main reason to go to college is to get an education, this is usually where ones problems start when they choose to abuse alcohol. Alcohol abuse can often lead to not attending class, missing important deadlines, failing tests or projects, not being adequately prepared for major tests or projects, and developing difficulty studying. Approximately one-third of college students admit to having missed at least one class because of their alcohol use, and nearly one-quarter of students reported failing a test or project because of the aftereffects of the alcohol they drank.

A. The Risk There is a need of complete saturation on the campuses, with the help of businesses and the media, expressing how excessive drinking is not attractive and not socially accepted. Also the health risks involved with binge or excessive drinking is very prevalent and risky for any college student who chooses to abuse alcohol. Besides

alcohol poisoning, there are many cancers and diseases associated with alcohol abuse that ultimately lead to death. Liver cancer, breast cancer, and skin cancer can all be associated with alcohol abuse. Also heart and liver disease can be associated with alcohol abuse.

B. The Reasons and Influences Ultimately college students are setting themselves up to become the alcoholics of the future because they drink when their depressed, stressed about school work, and to simply have a so called good time. College students who abuse alcohol seem to find or have every reason to drink than not to drink. Again the typical college student who always finds a reason to drink is accepted socially and that makes everything just fine. The social acceptance of drinking alcohol in college statistically makes alcohol abuse among college students one of the biggest problems within the school. Statistically alcohol has caused a commotions and misunderstanding among college students in parties and night-outs. Many have surrounding communities have lax enforcement of local laws, and ordinances on alcohol policies. Lax academic requirements can also exacerbate the problem, with few classes scheduled on Fridays and easy course requirements enabling a lot of free time for students to drink. The abuse of alcohol

among college students has a direct correlation to socialization. Students who go to college believe that binge or excessive drinking is a social norm. That when you go off to college it's time to not only get a degree, but also a time to drink and socialize at parties. College students' drinking behaviors are influenced primarily by their perceptions of their friends' drinking behaviors. A new study questions whether social norms marketing campaigns are effective.

C. The Effects On college campus, the use of alcohol has been an topic in need of explanation for many years. The concept will be explained with emphasized on the negative effects of hooch. But at any rate the negative concepts apply to all student. Besides the fact that a large number of students are underage when they drink, alcohol can put students in dangerous situations and give them a headache long after the hangover is gone. The short and long term effects alcohol has can impair students physically and mentally, impacting their education and health. In order to explain how alcohol can fully affect university students, the source of the issue must first be considered. Intoxication is when the quantity of alcohol the person consumes exceeds the individual's tolerance for alcohol and produces behavioral or physical abnormalities. In other words, the person's mental and physical abilities are impaired. Ethanol is a certain type of depressant alcohol that is responsible for these abnormalities. Depressants give the feeling of intoxication because they restrain the brain's ability to communicate with the rest of the body. The intensity of the effects varies from person to person and depends on the amount of alcohol that is absorbed into the bloodstream. For example, if a person has a few drinks, ethanol can make him or her more sociable, increase confidence, or slightly decrease concentration and coordination. While drinking, the logical thought process can become disrupted without much notice, leading to unintended situations. At parties, drinking games are a way for students to leisurely interact while usually drinking more than they normally would. Although the objective of most students during these games may be harmless, there some students that have a hidden agenda.
